I didn’t have the stomach for more drink after the gut-wrenching raffle to see if I was going to the game. Anyway, we wanted to completely soak up the atmosphere. And what an atmosphere it was !!! Lansdowne hasn’t rocked like that since the OrangeMen visited four years ago. We were in with the Eircom League supporters and didn’t sit from the first whistle to the last. Non stop singing, chanting and shouting. Marvellous !!! Ireland started really well but after 7 or 8 minutes conceded a free kick just outside the box after a clumsy Richie Dunne challenge on Henry. Zidane curled a beauty over the wall and was arrowing towards the top corner until somehow, Shay leapt across and clawed it away. A truly world-class save from the brilliant Donegal man. Not long afterwards we won a free in a similar position and Andy Reid curled a beauty against the post. A couple of inches to the right and we’d have been ahead because their keeper hardly moved. Robbie then had a big shout for a penalty after being slipped in by a lovely flick by Clint. Looked a definite penalty to me and I went ballistic when the German ref didn’t blow.

Shay given new three year contract at Newcastle NEWCASTLE’S Shay Given is determined to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership after signing a new deal which will keep him at St James’ Park until 2004. The 24 year old Republic of Ireland international has ended weeks of speculation that he could be on his way back to his first club, Celtic, by agreeing a new three year contract. Given’s signature will come as a huge boost to manager Bobby Robson, who rates the Lifford born keeper as one of the best five in the top flight. And it means the player can now get his mind back to doing what he does best to hold off the challenge of current understudy Steve Harper. ‘‘It took a bit longer than probably everyone would have liked, but I’m just glad it’s all sorted out and I can get on with my football,’’ said Given. ‘‘I never wanted to leave Newcastle and I told the chairman that when he asked me before we started talking. ‘‘I always wanted to stay and prove myself in the Premiership because it’s one of the best leagues in the world. That was another big reason why I wanted to stay. ‘‘There was a lot of talk about Celtic and I’m a Celtic fan, but I’ve had three good years at Newcastle and I want to continue that.
