Sullen Sherwood Tottenham's midfielder Tim Sherwood Gilberto Silva Atletico Minero ) seem to be proud of his progress. It will surely take him a considerable time to adapt to the Premiership (Wenger claims South Americans require around 6 months) so I would expect Edu to start the season partnering Vieira, with Silva making his contribution after Christmas (if he proves good enough). Wenger now seems to have gone a long way to solving the Champions' major problems in defence and midfield without spending a fortune, the board must be pleased. Anyone who caught the Rangers vs. AC Milan friendly earlier today was likely (perhaps surprisingly) to have enjoyed a competitive 90 minutes of football. I was hoping to catch Milan's new signing Rivaldo With spells of mixed success at Marseille and Perugia on loan, Ibrahim Ba 's 5 years at Milan have been troubled ones. I remember him signing for the then giants of Italian football in 1997, hailed as the most promising French talent of his generation, an exciting winger equally at home running at players as slipping through the killer pass. I suspect that the style of Italian football has not been kind to his talents and if someone was willing to give him a chance he could be a quality bargain buy; as he really doesn't seem to be wanted at Milan. Sticking with Scottish football Magnus Hedman If there's one thing about

Another busyand expensivetransfer season highlighted the preparation for a fixture-clogged European season England Manchester United's grip on the Premiership crown was never stronger than it was last year as the club wrapped up the title in a record number of games. This year that grip has been significantly weakened. While Liverpool, Chelsea, and Leeds United continued to make moves in order to overtake the Big Red Machine, United was happy just adding Fabien Barthez to help shore up the team's goaltending. Plus, the club will under significant pressure to secure the services of midfielders David Beckham and Paul Scholes or risk losing one or both to clubs in Italy or Spain more willing to splash out big money for big talent.

Ginola ready to face the German heat
by Neil Silver
DAVID GINOLA is preparing to run a gauntlet of hate when Spurs step out for their UEFA Cup second round, second-leg clash in Germany tonight.
The French maestro was at the centre of a ‘‘cheat’’ storm in last Thursday’s first leg at White Hart Lane.
Kaiserslautern’s players accused Ginola of diving to win the firsthalf penalty from which Steffen Iversen scored to give them a 1-0 lead.
Ginola and Spurs will be greeted with a red-hot welcome from the 32,000 capacity crowd in the Fritz Walter stadium, but the wing wizard is ready to face the music.
‘‘Steffen Freund has told me this is the most intimidating atmosphere in Germany, but I am prepared for that,’’ said Ginola.
‘‘After the first leg, I may be a marked man, and they may decide to put more than one player on me. But if that means some of my team-mates have more freedom it must be good for the team. I have experienced this on other occasions and if I am tightly marked then it gives space to other players.
‘‘When we beat Leicester in the Worthington Cup final to qualify for this competition I had two men on me all the time, but that meant someone else was left alone and in the end we lifted the trophy."

Current Affairs: Soccer The Beautiful Game Kim du Toit May 23, 2002 Soccer gets a bad rap in the United States (I'll call it "soccer" rather than by its real name, "football", just to avoid confusion by Americans). Perhaps this is because of the countries which play it well (England, Germany, Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina, and France, to name but a few); perhaps it's because it truly is the "People's Sport", played all over the world, by everyone; or perhaps it's just a regrettable reaction against soccer momsin the U.S., largely middle class women (in contrast to the rest of the world, where soccer is the sport of the working class). American journalists mirror this dislike. It should come as no surprise that the elitist
