Veteran scout Dennis Schofield, 73, from Swinton, who spotted Giggs's potential as a nine-year-old in a schoolboy match, was presented with the Mayor of Salford's Citizens Award. Manchester City fan Dennis took Giggs under his wing at Deans Football Club and City's youth teams before the winger was enticed away by United as a 14-year-old. Dennis said: "Ryan has always been a flyer. He was way above the other kids when I saw him playing. He could skin and beat players and there was no doubt about his potential. "I am pleased to receive this award, but there are countless others who are working at the grass-roots level who also deserve recognition." Dennis, who was nominated by the father of a boy he currently coaches, is scouting for City again after finishing his contract with the Reds last year.
