Liverpool won 2-0 Rafael Benitez has backed Steven Gerrard to maintain his astonishing Champions League goalscoring record after the Liverpool captain took his tally to seven in this season's competition with the opener in Liverpool's 2-0 win over FBK Kaunas. Gerrard climbed off the substitutes bench to break the deadlock against Lithuania champions FBK Kaunas before French international striker Djibril Cisse doubled the lead to give Liverpool a 5-1 aggregate cushion. The 25-year-old midfielder netted four goals, including one in the final against AC Milan, as the Merseyside club won the European Cup for the fifth time last season. Yet Gerrard has already bettered that tally by three after helping the Reds set up a third and final qualifying round tie against the winners of the CSKA Sofia-SK Tirana match.

Gerrard, a 68th minute replacement for Xabi Alonso, scored in the 84th and 85th minute after TNS goalkeeper Gerard Doherty had produced a string of stunning saves to frustrate the European champions, whose 6-0 aggregate win sees them facing a second round tie against FC Kaunas of Lithuania. LONDON - Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored his seventh goal in Champions League qualifying to help defending champion Liverpool advance Tuesday to the third round of European soccer's premier club competition. The Reds won 2-0 over FBK Kaunas and advanced on a 5-1 aggregate. Former champion Celtic was eliminated, however, losing 5-4 on aggregate to Artmedia Bratislava despite a 4-0 win. Gerrard scored in the 77th minute, two minutes after entering the match. It was his seventh goal in four qualifying matches. Djibril Cisse added Liverpool's second in the 85th at Anfield. The remaining second round qualifying matches were scheduled for Wednesday. Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez rested eight of the starting 11 from last week, when the Reds beat the Lithuanian team 3-1.

Liverpool turn down record offer for Gerrard
    July 5, 2005
Anfield chief executive Rick Parry has confirmed that Chelsea have made a bid for Liverpool's 25-year-old captain, who has broken off talks on a new contract.
"I can confirm we have had a bid from Chelsea and that it will be rejected by us," Parry told the BBC.
Gerrard, who called off talks with the club at the weekend, agreed to meet members of the Liverpool board on Monday night. He informed the representatives that he would sleep on their new offer.
Real Madrid are waiting in the wings and look set to embark upon a bidding war with Chelsea.
Bernabeu director of football Arrigo Sacchi said on Monday: "Of course we are interested in him, what big club isn't?.
"Until the player makes a move we are not going to be involved in a fight for his services."
Sacchi also denied speculation that Real and Chelsea had made a deal aimed at keeping the price down for Gerrard.
He said: "We have no agreement with Chelsea. How could we when our clubs are always interested in the same players?"

    Benitez issues Gerrard plea
    July 4, 2005
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez wants captain Steven Gerrard to stay at the club for the rest of his career and also believes the midfielder should become their next manager. Doubts over Gerrard's future at Liverpool arose after it emerged talks over a new contract had broken down.
However, Benitez told a news conference on Monday: "I can assure the fans we want Steve to sta. If I renew my deal after four more years, I would like Steve to be the next assistant coach, the next assistant manager or maybe the next manager.
"He can be the chief scout if he wants.
"We want Steve to stay with us for his life, that's our idea and we will try to the end. We are trying to build a better team and a better squad and I want Stevie to be a major part of that.
"We are improving the team," added Benitez, as he unveiled four new signings. Dutch winger Boudewijn Zenden, Spanish goalkeeper Jose Reina, Chile winger Mark Gonzalez and Spanish fullback Antonio Barragan are the new arrivals at Anfield.
Benitez said Liverpool had tried to open talks over a new deal with Gerrard on three occasions last year but the player had wanted to wait.

Reuters THURSDAY, AUGUST 4, 2005 Glasgow Celtic came agonizingly close to survival with a dramatic 4-0 home victory over Artmedia Petrzalka in the second leg of their Champions League second qualifying round match. The Scottish side bowed out, 5-4 on aggregate, after trailing 5-0 from the first leg in Slovakia. "Of course we are very happy because we have got past a big team in two big games," Vladimir Weiss, the Artmedia coach, said. "After a victory of 5-0 at home, it was very hard to convince the players that miracles cannot happen. Thank God, it didn't happen, even though it was close." He praised the Celtic fans, saying: "I have been in football many years, but I have never seen such an atmosphere. They are incredible."

Steven Gerrard to remain at Liverpool
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has had a dramatic change of heart and decided to stay at Anfield. The 25-year-old told Liverpool he wanted to leave after contract negotiations broke down. Chelsea looked set to land Gerrard after having an initial £32m bid rejected by Liverpool. But Gerrard has another change of heart after talks with chief executive Rick Parry, who said: "He realises how much the club means to him." You know that he is Liverpool through and through.
    week
So why would he consider leaving? Ok, in the current climate of G8 talks and poverty in Africa, 30,000 kids a day dying etc, how can you justify a salary and a transfer fee like those being banded around.
I don't begrudge soccer players that sort of money. You can't say they are worth that much, but when you look at their careers it can be put into perspective (to some degree).
Gerrard is at the peak of his career. From now on it is all downhill. It won't be a steep slope and hopefully he be playing as good as he did last year for a few more years yet (not that I am a Liverpool fan by the way. In fact, being a Chelsea supporter I'm disappointed that we didn't land him. Him and Lampard in the same team would have been an awesome midfield).

There appear to be bucket loads released every year and most fade without a trace. Here though, is the first footy sim on the GBA. Now I wouldn't normally play a football game, I've played them before and, to be honest, I'm really not that good at them. Total Soccer is slightly different though. I first encountered an unfinished version at this year's ECTS and was intrigued to say the least. Let's hope the developers at Exient have used the months since to produce a game that we all want to own. Screen Shots GamePlay The first thing you'll notice about this title is that it caters for all types of games lasting from two to sixteen minutes. Say, for starters you wanted a simple league game against two rival sides. You choose 'Single Game', select your teams and you're away. You can actually be right in the main game in a matter of seconds if you wish. If you're finding things a little too easy you can make the game last longer, your opponents more intelligent or even throw in a bit of weather, say wind for example. This is just for starters as there are tournaments to choose and over 150 up-to-date teams too. You can have a short, local competition or go global.
