Hoddle puts foot down and warns Gazza following off-field frolics
Fitness concerns put wayward star's berth in England World Cup squad in jeopardy
by Martin Lipton
ANGRY Glenn Hoddle yesterday (Tues) gave Paul Gascoigne a final warning: Let me down again and you're out for ever.
Hoddle is furious at the latest example of Gascoigne's inability to keep himself out of the wrong kind of headlines.
Out on the town with Rod Stewart at the weekend, Gascoigne was spotted out eating a kebab in the early hours.
After Hoddle had publicly urged Gascoigne to get his house in order, the response was hardly what he wanted or expected.
That was why the England coach sat the errant Geordie down for a face-to-face on Monday night.
He "forcefully" told Gascoigne that his international career will end before the France if he does not knuckle down at once.
And that included a clear warning that he faces the boot from the World Cup if he is spotted out on the town with showbiz pals like Chris Evans, Danny Baker or Rod Stewart.
"We had a good long chat," said Hoddle. "Paul knows the situation and what's being asked of him — he knows exactly.

England on direct course as Gazza forced to walk
PAUL Gascoigne's World Cup dream ended in tears last night, just as it did in more glorious circumstances back in 1990.
Gascoigne was said to be distraught at the news that he had been axed from Glenn Hoddle's squad for France.
But no-one desperate for England to do well in the World Cup should shed a tear as a wasted career finally ended up on the international scrapheap.
No-one who has watched Gascoigne over the last two months as he huffed and puffed in cameo roles against the likes of Saudi Arabia and Morocco can have concluded anything other than that this was a legend who had turned into a liability.
No longer could Gascoigne go past an opponent in that elbows-pumping, determined manner of old.
In short, his game, rather like his injury-ravaged body, had fallen apart.
And yet, though this was the right decision for England, the sight of Gascoigne lamenting his turbulent and tormented career is one of the true tragedies of sport. But Gascoigne can have no complaints. For no-one could have offered as much help, shown more compassion, gone that extra yard when Gascoigne was taking a mile, than Hoddle.
He stood by him through the scandal of beating up his ex-wife, Sheryl. He put an arm around his shoulder and cajoled him to get fit and persuaded him that his country needed those undisputed talents.

Could Gascoigne be headed for D.C. United?; British reports say so.
News reports have British bad boy Paul Gascoigne headed to Major League Soccer and D.C. United. The question is: do they really want him? By Gary Davidson
and Willy Calderon
SoccerTimes
(Wednesday, July 10, 2002) Could Paul Gascoigne, the bad boy of British soccer, be headed for Major League Soccer and D.C. United? Numerous news organizations in England have reported breathlessly within the last 24 hours that "Gazza" was headed to Washington, D.C., to join buddy Ray Hudson, United's coach since the beginning of this season. If there is any truth to these stories, MLS management and fans should probably hold their breath. Should Gascoigne arrive in the States, the chances are probably far greater that he will create disaster than make any meaningful contribution to the struggling D.C. team, once the pride of MLS, but now fallen on hard times. D.C. United media relations director Doug Hicks said it was premature for Hudson or technical director Dave Kasper to comment on the stories. "That's pretty much speculation at this point," he added.

The European Championships 1996 took place in England at Wembley, Villa Park, St James Park (Newcastle), Elland Road (Leeds), Anfield (Liverpool), Old Trafford (Manchester), Hillsborough (Sheffield) and the City Ground (Nottingham). England would play all their games at Wembley which was seen as an advantage for them. England's best performance to date in the European Championships was third place in 1968. Before the tournament started there were newspaper reports of troublesome behaviour by some members of the England squad in a pre-tournament trip to Hong Kong. Paul Gascoigne, especially, was always in the headlines. At the start of the tournament, Germany were the favourites to win it at 4-1, Italy were 5-1, Holland were 11-2, France were 6-1, England were 7-1, Spain were 8-1 and Portugal were 10-1.
The results in the England's group A were: England 1 (Shearer 23) Switzerland 1 (Turkyilmaz 83 pen)
Holland Scotland
Holland 2 Switzerland

ITALY 1990: West Germany win the ugly game West Germany and Argentina provided a terrible advertisement for the World Cup when they contested an undistinguished Italia '90 final. Argentina had triumphed four years earlier but the Germans won this ill-tempered match with an Andreas Brehme penalty. Argentina had gone into the final with four players suspended and finished the game with nine men - Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti getting their marching orders. West Germany took the lead five minutes from time when Rudi Voller was tripped by Robert Sensini and Brehme made no mistake from the spot to clinch the Germans' third World Cup win. The final was a let down but then so was much of what preceded it in a tournament which had its moments but on the whole was uninspiring.

    FA CHARGE FERDINAND
This is the FA statement on England and player Rio Ferdinand's failure to attend an anti-doping test :
The FA has today charged Rio Ferdinand with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E26, with reference to Regulation 1(c) of the FA Doping Control Regulations... Regulation 1(c) refers to "the failure or refusal by a player to submit to drug testing as required by a competent official". The charge relates to the selection of Rio Ferdinand to submit to out-of-competition testing on 23rd September 2003 as part of The FA's Doping Control Programme. Rio Ferdinand has 14 days to respond to the charge. Note: FA Rule E26 states that: "A Participant shall comply with the provisions of any doping control regulations as shall be in force from time to time as determined by the Council."
The FA have yet to reveal the penalty Ferdinand will face - but he has escaped the more serious charge of 'wilfully missing a test', which carries a maximum two-year ban.
