The first four teams advance directly to Germany, the lucky fifth survivor will play a home-and-away series with Oceania’s winner. Soccer stars playing in Europe wear out with the constant trips and long home-away series against nine countries: 18 games total, plus two matches a week if playing in an European competition, taking no summer vacations, and making money for the South American Football Confederation. Three coaches already lost their jobs, another is under his way out, Brazil and Argentina do not convince their crowds, Venezuela lives a soccer revolution, and Uruguay still dreams of their 1950 World Championship. After five matches, this is what is up:

    OLIMPIA
    The Coach
    Nery PUMPIDO (Arg)
    Born: 30.07.57.
Former goalkeeper best known for winning the 1986 World Cup with Argentina and for suffering a horrific injury at Italia 90. Took over at Olimpia at the start of the year after several seasons coaching Union Santa Fe. Winning the Libertadores has done wonders for his profile in his native land; following Argentina's World Cup disappointment he was among the many names cited in the press as a future national team coach.
    Goalkeepers
    Danilo ACEVAL
Athletic keeper with good reflexes who was Paraguay's reserve at France 98. Once seen as a great hope, his career has lost momentum.
    Ricardo TAVARELLI
Experienced, charismatic keeper who deputised for Jose Luis Chilavert in Paraguay's 2002 World Cup opener against South Africa and is now his country's first choice. Stocky figure, an excellent shot stopper but not always so proficient dealing with crosses.
Defenders Pedro BENITEZ 23.03.81. Promising stopper, strong in the air, known as 'Goose'. A stalwart of Paraguay's 2001 World Youth Cup side.

Luciana Gaucci: Perugia President of 13 years who was once a bus driver turned millionaire. He once bribed a referee with a racehorse, fired Perugia's South Korean player Jung-Hwan after he knocked Italy out of the 2002 World Cup, signed Gaddafi, the Libyan dictator's (Qaddafi) son, tried to sign a female player although Italian rules strictly forbid it and hired shamed Olympic athlete Ben Johnson as a fitness coach - he claims "I never pull stunts."
Paul Gascoigne: Served his dad and his mate mince pies after he scooped the filling out and replaced it with cat crap. Whilst dining at a hotel, placed his erect penis on the shoulder of someone on the next table, who turned around thinking someone tapped him on the shoulder - only to be prodded in the cheek. Pissed on Richard Gough whilst playing for Rangers.
Cyril the Swan the Swansea Cith's mascot: invaded the pitch after Swansea scored a goal and recieved a touchline ban. Offered to replace Kevin Keagen when he was England boss. Ripped the head off the Millway mascot (Zampa the Lion) and kicked it into the crowd.

BY NICK BARBARO
May 17, 2002:
Coach is on vacation this week hitting golf balls into water hazards somewhere or other so I've hijacked the space for a quick preview of the upcoming World Cup , soccer's quadrennial celebration of the beautiful game. First up is the good news/bad news joke: For the first time ever, every game will be shown live on U.S. television , on some combination of ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2. The bad news: with the WC being played in Japan and Korea, every kickoff falls between midnight and 6:30am local time. (God only knows how many infomercials they had to bump in order to pull this off.) So, unless you're coming over to my house for the international-themed breakfasts , you might want to stock up on blank videotapes for some heavy time-shifting. As for the competition itself, here's a primer on what'll be going on: Thirty-two national teams will compete throughout the month of June. In the first round, eight four-team groups play a round-robin, with the top two in each group advancing to a 16-team knockout round, culminating in the Final on June 30. Here's a look at each of the first-round groups: Group A: France is the defending champ and current favorite, and should go through easily.

We welcome your feedback NEWSLETTER Send us your email to subscribe to our newsletter DISABLED-FRIENDLY FUNCTIONALITY Last gasp goal helps South Africa hold Paraguay Busan, June 2 By Nimish Dubey (nimishdubey@yahoo.co.in) An injury time penalty from Quinton Fortune helped South Africa draw 2-2 with Paraguay in the opening match of Group B. It was a great fight back by the South Africans who were down 2-0 at one stage. Paraguay started the match without their inspirational goalkeeper and captain, Jose Luis Chilavert, who had been suspended after an altercation in a match against Brazil prior to the tournament. They took the field in their red and white shirts and blue shorts. South Africa chose to play in an all-white kit. Although neither of the two teams is particularly known for its ability to attack, the match got off to a dramatic start. Less than half a minute had elapsed when Santa Cruz burst through the South African defence, got around the South African goalkeeper and then lost his footing. Many felt that the South African goalkeeper had brought Santa Cruz down and that there was some ground for a penalty to be awarded. The referee however, was not one of them. Sibaya responded by almost putting South Africa ahead but his long ranger went just wide of the Paraguayan goal.

For the next month the worlds focus will be on South Korea and Japan as football (wogball to a lot of my Aussie mates in the Italian Forum) stops the world. 199 countries started out on the road to qualifying and now we are down to 32. This promises to be one of the great World Cups and from a punters perspective one of the most open betting tournaments ever. Never before has the World Cup been played outside the Americas or Europe, and only once has it been won by a nation from outside the host continent. Hosting the tournament has been an advantage in the past, with 6 home nations holding aloft the Jules Rimet Trophy. We can safely assume that Japan or South Korea will not be winning it this time. The big X factor in this World Cup will be the heat and humidity of Asia. How will the Europeans adjust and does it give the Latin American countries an advantage?

Bergkamp makes world of difference to Dutch hopes
THE return of Dennis Bergkamp to action, even if he is initially used as substitute, hardens the view that Holland will mount one of the most concentrated challenges for this World Cup.
Bergkamp is such a pivotal player that Holland's prospects might well stand or fall on the state of his health.
Such a conception might not be very flattering to his colleagues, all of whom are players of some reputation in their own right, but such is his standing in the game.
Bergkamp is capable of illuminating this World Cup, capable of emerging as the most influential player of all even in the company of such luminaries as Ronaldo, Marcelo Salas, the exciting Hadji of Morocco, Bierhoff, Ortega et al.
There is no doubt his presence is of crucial importance to the Dutch who look to a player of great technical ability and fertile imagination to give focus and meaning to their work.
Belgium, one fears, are here only to make up the numbers, their involvement secured at the expense of a relatively weak Ireland in a play-off and non too convincingly at that.

Bitter pill for Spaniards as six goals barrage is not enough
Spain 6
Bulgaria 1
SPAIN became the first major casualty of the World Cup last night despite finally shaking off their torpor to give Bulgaria a six-goal thrashing in Lens.
Javier Clemente's side left their best until last with a scintillating exhibition of attacking football in which Fernando Morientes and substitute Francisco Kiko both grabbed a brace of goals.
But just as Morocco had cruelly seen Norway deny them a place in the second round after beating Scotland, it was Paraguay, rather than Spain, who sealed a second round clash with France by shocking Nigeria 3-1 in Toulouse.
On this evidence, the competition will be poorer for Spain's early departure, but they have only themselves to blame after allowing Nigeria to come from behind in their opening game and failing to beat a stubborn Paraguay.
Knowing only a win would be good enough at the outset, under-fire Spanish boss Javier Clemente surprisingly opted to leave striker Raul on the bench in favour of Athletic Bilbao's Joseba Etxeberria.
But the side that had looked woefully short of attacking ideas against the South Americans were transformed right from the first whistle.

On that note, the baseball home run feats of Sammy Sosa in 1998 should make him the national hero of the Dominican Republic Note 2: In the remaining countries, here are some cited names:
