    WORLD SOCCER COMPETITION
    NOVEMBER 2004 - WINNER
Important information for captains On the day of the final make sure you know roughly what 7.5kg feels like. If you are complacent your lifting m ay appear sluggish and stilted, but on the other hand if you overestimate its weight the lifting will appear rushed and will lack elegance. You have all of this information to consider when you step onto the podium with your team jubilantly waiting behind you. Most importantly, decide how to hold the trophy up. Choose a style that best suits you and your team, whether it be a triumphant and bold lifting above your head or a gentle presentation to the side of your body. By Ian McIntyre Ian enters our shortlist from which the overall winner will be selected. The winner of the grand prize will travel to the Champions League Final in Istanbul next May as a guest of World Soccer, watch the game as part of the World Soccer reporting team, and then write a report that will be published in World Soccer.

    Coach: Andrea Mandorlini
Key arrivals: Albertini (Lazio), Rossini (Bologna)
    Key departures: none
Prediction: Back in Serie A after a season down below,
the yo-yo club will as ever be concentrating solely on
guaranteeing survival. Coach Mandorlini is new to Serie A
but he can count on the
experience of midfielders Demetrio Albertini and Alex Pinardi, and strikers Gianni Commandini and Fausto Rossini.
BOLOGNA Coach: Carlo Mazzone Key arrivals: Zagorakis (AEK Athens), Giunti (Besiktas), Cipriani (Sampdoria) Key departures: Signori (retired), Nakata (Fiorentina), Guglielminpietro (Boca Juniors) Prediction: Coach Mazzone, 67, remains at the helm of a side strengthened by the arrival of Euro 2004-winning captain Theo Zagorakis but weakened by the retirement of striker Beppe Signori. Bologna can expect a better showing than last season, when Mazzone was controversially appointed just before the campaign began. BRESCIA Coach: Gianni De Biasi Key arrivals: Manninger (Bologna), Sculli (Chievo), Zambrella (Servette)

by Francesca Di Meglio Italian soccer always features at least a dash of drama. But the upcoming season, which only began this weekend, is already turning into a soap opera. That is the small price you pay for the passion of a soccer-mad country. Here, 10 subplots you can look forward to as the Italian soccer season kicks off: Di Meglio Football Fiascos : Between the financial woes plaguing most Italian teams even the likes of Lazio , which was unable to pay its players for months last season but still managed to be among the top of the scudetto and scuttlebutts about favoritism among the referees, controversy threatens to overshadow the beautiful game. Starting the season with protests about an increase in the number of teams in Serie B - from 20 to 24 - hardly helped matters. The expansion came after

WORLD CUP 2002 IRELAND TEAMS FIXTURES HISTORY
Azurri not so blue ITALY PROFILE: With a side boasting three of the best defenders in the world, Italy’s solid foundations will give a platform from which to build success, writes Paul Doyle After seeing the draw, the bookies immediately installed Italy as second-favourites and it’s true that elimination from a group including Croaita, Ecuador, and Mexico would leave the Azzuri feeling very blue indeed. Everyone knows Italy’s greatest strength: Alessandro Nesta, Fabio Cannavaro, and Paolo Maldinii are three of the best defenders in the world, and Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Toldo two of the finest goalkeepers. Most of Italy’s midfield is defensive-minded too. Roma’s Damiano Tommassi and Gianluca Zambrotta of Juventus are even-tempered types who tend to stand firm rather than rage forward. The same can be said of Giuseppe Pancaro and even Demetrio Albertini, so the main thrust forwards comes from Francesco Coco, when selected, or, of course, Francesco Totti (above).

yeah, Prandelli is also good, especially when it comes to training young players. but the thing is, with Capello's leaving, chances are a lot of potential young players like Mexes are going with him. that's what upsets me the most, i think. As the world watches the appalling spectacle of innocents being beheaded in Iraq, allegedly for reasons of nationalism by what some persist in calling a "resistance", a substantial number of people internationally have turned to a more pleasing display that is no less nationalistic, but also far less wantonly destructive: the Euro 2004 soccer tournament Every four years, European nations organize the championship, a miniature version of the World Cup. This year, the competition (which began two weeks ago) is being played out in Portugal, and as of today, those qualified will move to the quarterfinals, with the final match scheduled for July 4. It was a coincidence, if a happy one, that on the weekend the Euro started, elections were held to the European Parliament. The results were a disaster for governing parties, but more significantly a triumph for Euroskeptic parties angry at the growing power of the EU's bureaucracy and institutions. In Britain, a former television commentator, Robert Kilroy-Silk (whom the BBC recently

main injuries odds transfers ... preview Juventus clinched a record 28th Serie A title last term, while Parma ensured top flight survival with a relegation play-off win over Bologna. However, the offseason was also interesting. So, Treviso and Ascoli will play in Italy's Serie A after the Italian Football Federation ruled that Genoa and Torino could not take their places in the top flight. Second division champions Genoa were relegated to the third tier for match-fixing, while Torino were ordered back into Serie B due to their poor finances. Only Serie B runners-up Empoli, of the three clubs that gained promotion in June, will actually play in Serie A. Treviso and Ascoli finished fifth and sixth in Serie B last term, while Perugia, who finished in fourth place, have been also demoted to the third division for financial problems. Here is a short summary of the 2004/05 Serie A campaign: Champions: Juventus (Champions League)
    Runners-up: Milan (Champions League)
Third place: Inter (Champions League 3rd qualifying round)
Fourth place: Udinese (Champions League 3rd qualifying round)
    Fifth place: Sampdoria (UEFA Cup)
    Sixth place: Palermo (UEFA Cup)
Italian Cup finalists: Roma (UEFA Cup)
    Relegated: Bologna, Brescia, Atalanta
