Bergkamp makes world of difference to Dutch hopes
THE return of Dennis Bergkamp to action, even if he is initially used as substitute, hardens the view that Holland will mount one of the most concentrated challenges for this World Cup.
Bergkamp is such a pivotal player that Holland's prospects might well stand or fall on the state of his health.
Such a conception might not be very flattering to his colleagues, all of whom are players of some reputation in their own right, but such is his standing in the game.
Bergkamp is capable of illuminating this World Cup, capable of emerging as the most influential player of all even in the company of such luminaries as Ronaldo, Marcelo Salas, the exciting Hadji of Morocco, Bierhoff, Ortega et al.
There is no doubt his presence is of crucial importance to the Dutch who look to a player of great technical ability and fertile imagination to give focus and meaning to their work.
Belgium, one fears, are here only to make up the numbers, their involvement secured at the expense of a relatively weak Ireland in a play-off and non too convincingly at that.

Fatigued Belgium outwitted by more passionate South Korea
Belgium 1
Korea Republic 1
A DAY of jeers, cheers and outrageous melodrama at Parc des Princes where Korea Republic put paid to Belgium's high hopes of making it through to the knock-out stages.
Belgium were 20 minutes from succeeding when suddenly they were overtaken by events almost too dramatic to find words to describe. Belgium were leading 1-0 at the time while their rivals for the second qualifying spot, Mexico, were trailing 0-2 to Holland in St. Etienne.
Then Korea snatched an equalising goal in a game Belgium just HAD to win to survive and they were suddenly overwhelmed by events they were powerless to control.
Not only did Korea flourish to the point where they were more likely to win and take the three points Belgium needed but Mexico pulled back a two-goal deficit to render events in Paris meaningless.
In the final analysis, Belgium would have had to beat Korea 4-1 to overhaul Mexico on points and beat them on goals difference.

Defending the Soccer Goal: All the Pretty Catches
Adapted From: Soccer For Dummies In today's modern game, the bigger the goalkeeper, the better. Bigger goalkeepers can cover more ground in front of the net. But they must be quick and nimble as well. The best ones in the world are six feet or taller, though there certainly is room for the smaller set like Jorge Campos, who is just 5-foot 9-inches. Some say goalkeepers are like wine, meaning that they get better with age. The more experienced they become, the more knowledgeable about the game they are; most professional keepers, in fact, don't hit their prime until they are into their 30s. It's all about positioning. The less pounding a body takes, the better. And besides, your mom will love you a little more because your uniform won't be as dirty as it could be.
Catching the ball
Making saves isn't just knocking the ball out of harm's way. If a keeper can hold onto the ball, the opposition has no way to score. It is an unwritten law that if a goalkeeper can touch the ball, he can save it. When the opposition is attacking, the keeper should be prepared to grab the ball out of the air or pounce on it. For starters, the keeper should be standing with his hands at his side and palms facing the ball while his feet should not be wider than his shoulders. The goalkeeper's center of gravity should be low, and his weight should be on the balls of his feet when the shot is taken (see Figure 1).

Outside Oberlin USA Beats Mexico in World Cup Qualifying Match
    By Blake Rehberg
World Cup 2002 may seem like a long way away, but not for the U.S. national team. They played their first game in the final group stage against Mexico on Wednesday winning 2-0.
The game was not far away from Oberlin, in the Columbus Crew stadium. The site was selected to limit Mexican fans and make the Mexican team uncomfortable because of the cold. It was apparently successful on both counts. The stadium was full of American fans, with an attendance total of 24,624. Several players commented in online interviews that they definitely felt a home field advantage. The temperature was in the 20s and I can’t help but think that contributed to the victory.
Wednesday’s match got off to a very slow start. The first half was pretty uneventful. I didn’t even bother to pay all that much attention to it. Neither team successfully built an attack and there were very few chances.
The key events of the first half were injuries. U.S. Striker Brian McBride took a serious hit to the eye in an aerial challenge and had to leave the field. His right eye was immensely swollen, making it impossible for McBride to see on that side. Josh Wolff, who turned 24 on Sunday, took the field in the 15th minute as McBride’s replacement.
McBride has been plagued by injuries for a while now. A blood clot in his arm and a fractured cheekbone caused him to miss at least four games of the previous qualifying round.
