Neuville sends Germany into quarter-finals
Neuville celebrates the goal that broke the deadlock
Germany 1 Paraguay
JUNE 15th: Oliver Neuville picked the perfect time to net his first ever World Cup goal today, scoring two minutes from time in a 1-0 win over Paraguay to send Germany through to the quarter-finals. As the clock ticked down towards extra-time following a uninspiring encounter Bernd Schneider raced down the right flank and crossed for Neuville, who unhesitatingly smashed the ball home past Paraguay's veteran keeper Jose Luis Chilavert. The Paraguayans were out to cause a colossal shock with a quarter-final in Ulsan against Mexico or the United States at stake on June 21st.

Paraguay led 2-0 but South Africa's improved performance in the second half earned earned parity as the South Americans tried to preserve a lead by sitting back and defending. Goalkeeper Ricardo Tavarelli needlessly upended Sibusise Zuma in the 91st minute to concede the spot kick which midfielder Quiton Fortune swept in. Two brilliant free kicks by Francisco Arce had earlier given Paraguay a lead. Arce set up Roque Santa Cruz in the 38th minute for a diving header and then slapped a curler in off the underside of the crossbar to come close to winning the game. Santa Cruz had an impressive first half and came close with two headers that forced saves from goalkeeper Andre Arendse with a 31st minute cross from striker Jorge Campos particularly impressive. Campos was included by Italian coach Cesare Maldini ahead of Jorge Campos and provided some bright work on the left wing.

World Cup 2002 News Match Reports Euro 2000 News Match Reports Search this site: 2002 World Cup qualifier - Paraguay 2 Brazil 1 First Published: Jul 19, 2000 Ten man Brazil lost only their second ever World Cup qualifier in Asuncion last night as Paraguay's Jorge Campos smashed a great winner in the 83rd minute. Paraguay - who were also reduced to ten men by a red card - now have nine points in the CONMEBOL qualifying table for the 2002 World Cup thanks to substitute Campos' great effort. Rivaldo brought Brazil level to seemingly save a point but Campos ran on to control a long ball down field from Jose Luis Chilavert and ran past two defenders to smash a shot across Dida's goal into the far corner to delight the home fans. Brazil's only previous World Cup qualifying defeat came in Bolivia in 1993 and a year later they went to win the World Cup in the US. Now coach Wanderley Luxemburgo must convince sceptical fans that his team can do the same.

Professional Soccer Finally Arrives In America
Ben D., Pittsfield, MA

Ever since the festival that was World Cup '94, there has been a craving by soccer fans across the country for a premier soccer league. This has finally been fulfilled with the start of Major League Soccer. There are ten teams playing in two divisions, eight of which compete in playoffs to reach the championship game in Foxboro, Massachusetts, home of the New England Revolution. The four teams in the Eastern Division who compete against the Revolution are the Columbus Crew, Washington DC United, New York/New Jersey Metrostars, and the Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Western Division will consist of the Dallas Burn, Colorado Rapids, Kansas City Wiz, Los Angeles Galaxy and the San JosÈ Clash.
This league has been bashed by soccer critics who feel that the American populous will not catch onto this great game which is nearly a worldwide religion. These critics have been silenced for the time being with the average attendance at the MLS home-openers at 31,000. Another crack by critics is that there is not enough home-grown talent to support a professional league. These critics refer to the demise in the early '80s of the North American Soccer League which depended almost entirely on imported talent. The critics have again been proven wrong with Brian McBride (Columbus Crew) and Rob Ukrop (New England Revolution), both of whom have a two-goal game this season and are American-born.
Besides these stars, there are many international players including Roberto Donadonai of Italy (and NY/NJ), and just recently of AC Milan of Italy's Serie A, Carlos Valderrama of Colombia (and Tampa Bay), and the ecstatic Mexican and Los Angeles goalkeeper/forward Jorge Campos. There are also many American National team players who now play in their homeland, including Alexi Lalas and Mike Burns (New England), Tab Ramos (NY/NJ), John Harkes and Jeff Agoos (Washington DC.), and a number of others.

Branding a team takes more than a logo, colors
      By GLENN DAVIS
In their 10th season, Major League Soccer franchises continue to fight the battle of branding their teams in specific cities across the United States. ADVERTISEMENT In a crowded sporting and entertainment landscape, the competition to earn a consumer's confidence and loyalty remains a great challenge for MLS teams. Uniforms, logos, star players, tradition, winning culture and playing style are important in branding a team. So which are the most respected and branded teams in MLS? And how did they get there? D.C. United comes to mind first because of the team's history, fan support, trophies and a legacy of great players that have included Bolivians Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno, Salvadoran Raul Diaz Arce and Americans Eddie Pope and Ben Olsen. United's rich history includes four MLS Cups, an InterAmerica Cup win over Brazil's Sao Paulo, a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and a CONCACAF Champions Cup.

SAVIN GRACE Hunky Mexican Goalie JoRgE CaMpoS helps keep the new U.S. soccer league on its feet.- Soccer fans at the Rose Bowl are on their feet. Not a single goal has been scored, not a shot taken. Indeed, the day's doubleheader-the U.S. national team vx. Mexico national team, followed by the Los Angeles GAlaxy against the Tampa Bay Mutiny-hasen't even started: 90,000 people are screaming their heads off during the warmup period. The object of their hysteria? Jorge Campos, 29, the quicksilver goalie for both Mexico and the Galaxy, a national hero in his homeland and, after just six months, a hero in L.A. Campos deardeavil play hasn't just helped make Los ANgeles one of the powers in Major League Soccer-the team will be heading into the playoffs starting Sept.24-it has made him a superstar in the new 10-tean league. "Jorge", says Mike Sorber,25, a U.S. National Team midfielder for the Kansas CIty Wiz, "is like the Michael Jordan of Mexico. He's one of the top goalkeepers in the world. He has a lot of flair and charisma. Campos's fan appeal outshines even that of teammate Andrew Shue, a former Dartmkouth standout whose job is as a heartthrob on Melorose Place. And Campos, who grew up in Acapulco on his well-to-do parent's cattle ranch and whose first love was surfing, speaks only a little English. Through an interpreter, he is quick to profess puzzulment at the fans, many or them young women, who sometimes mob him. "I have always thought," he says, "the people who really are famous are the movie stars. It excites me. It gives me chills." Campos's very athletic, very unorhtodox playing style has the same effect on his opponents. He has all the hair-trigger reactions needed to play goal, but he also has the speed and dribbling ability of a forward. In fact, he's quite capable of switching jerseys and playing forward-as he did during the second half of the Tampa Bay game-a display of versatility that is almost unheard-of in soocer. "Jorge's been very important to the league and to the team in many ways," Sunil Gulati, MLS's deputy commisioner, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year. "We wanted to send a message about acquiring an attacking, entertainig player, and even as a goalkeeper he does that." A high-wattage Campos will be needed to keep MLS from suffering the fate of the previos attempt to introduce pro soccer to the U.S.The North AMerican Soccer League, started in 1968, fizzled out in 1985. Since signig with the Galaxy in June 1995-the eight year pro still plays for Mexico City's Club Atlante-Campos has spent much of his time on the road or traveling to rejoin Mexico's National team, for wich he has played about 60 times. So far, he has had little time to spend with his girlfriend, an aspiring model who lives in Acapulco. In October, after the Mls playoffs, he will return to Club Atlante, for which he will play until the GAlxy begins its season next year. Campos also has several lucrative endorsment contracts, including a deal with NIKE, which markets a brightly hued lino of Jorge Campos goalie uniforms. Despite his wealth, however, Campos lives un a modest, sparsely furnished apartment in L.A.'s Westwood section. For fun, he pals around the wee hours with Galaxy teamm- ates Jorge SAlcedo and Guillermo Jara. "Jorge never wants to sleep at night," says Salcedo, 23, a midfielder. "He likes to have a good time. The unique thing is that he doesn't drink at all, he doesn't smoke at all. His favorite drink is orange juice." If he ever OD's, his friends add, it'll be on Häagen-Dazs. "He always asks for ice cream," says Jara,22, a forward. "That's pretty much his diet." Adoration? All the ice cream he can eat? Sounds good to Campos. "I love Los Angeles. I would love to continue playing here," he says. "Soccer has been very good to me."
