If the FA's charges are upheld, Bosnich could be handed a worldwide ban for up to a year. Bosnich's legal team will present evidence to an FA Disciplinary Commission hearing along with the Professional Footballers Association, which is thought to be are ready to back the 30-year-old. Parlour gives Gunners Wembley win

Ray Parlour beats a stretching David May to score the winning goal
Man Utd 1-2 Arsenal Ray Parlour sent Manchester United's treble-winners crashing to earth with a late goal to give Arsenal victory in the Charity Shield. The midfielder hit a fierce strike 13 minutes from time, after a Kanu penalty had cancelled out David Beckham's opening goal, as the Gunners secured their second successive win over United in the Wembley curtain-raiser. John Murray: "Kanu sparked Arsenal's second-half comeback" It was the first time Sir Alex Ferguson's all-conquerring team had been beaten in any competition in 1999. And while the result will have little long-term consequence, Arsenal will take heart from the tussle as they look to launch an effective challenge to United's Premiership crown. Ferguson and United, though, will point to the fact that they lost the Charity Shield 3-0 to the north London side last season and went on to win three trophies - while Arsenal finished the season with nothing. ... Fears that the match would be devalued by the clubs fielding experimental line-ups were dispelled when two strong sides were announced. David Beckham is mobbed by his team-mates after his brilliant free-kick Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, though, was forced through an injury crisis to reshuffle his first-choice team.

For the record By Hamid Taghavi
      December 2, 1997
The Iranian By all accounts, this was a most improbable game. In the 32nd minute, a very well organized Australian drive finally paid off when two Australian players were left all alone against Abedzadeh on a beautifully executed cross sent from the left wing over Iran's defense, and the youthful looking Harry Kewell of English league's Leeds, the same one who scored Australia's goal in Tehran, promptly placed the ball into the goal from an acute angle past Abedzadeh. Australia did not let up. Though Iran's defense was coming somewhat alive, they were still unable to fully contain the Aussies. Their failure to tightly mark the forwards lasted through the break and into the second half. A few minutes later, at minute 76, the speed demon Azizi, snatched the ball from his own teammate and dribbled through Australia's defensive line, where he was trapped by two fullbacks against the end line, stripped of the ball and thrown to the ground. For a second, Azizi seemed to have given up and sat down on the ground. But instantly, he spotted an opportunity. While the two defenders were deciding what to do with the ball, Azizi rose to his feet in a blink, ran to the defenders from their blind side and snatched the ball once more, this time passing it to Bagheri who was wide open. His celebration in disbelief seemed to start even before he went back to retrieve the ball which was slightly behind him. His shot went past a helplessly watching Mark Bosnich who had dove earlier in an attempt to block Azizi.

The Cincinnati Reds owner known for her fondness for Hitler has some company from a soccer star in England. Mark Bosnich, a veteran goalkeeper for Aston Villa, turned two weeks ago to face a crowd of 32,000, raised his left arm in a Nazi salute and put two fingers from his right hand across his upper lip in imitation of the Fhrer's moustache.
After taking heat from several politicians and a number of soccer fans, an apparently contrite Bosnich issued this cryptic statement: "I do not comprehend that people would believe that someone with a Jewish aunt would in any way go out to deliberately offend people."
An Australian of Croatian descent, Bosnich was in Villa's goal for the first time after being sidelined for two months by a knee injury. Bosnich has had something of an ongoing feud with the fans for the home team

Suarez set for record as Mexico opens its cup defense
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday May 29, 2001 11:38 AM SEOUL, South Korea (AP) On the eve of becoming the most capped player in international soccer, Mexico captain Claudio Suarez shrugs off the achievement as nothing special. Suarez will lead Mexico when it opens its Confederations Cup defense Wednesday against Australia at Suwon Stadium, 50 kilometers (30 miles) outside the South Korean capital. "I feel calm," the veteran of 156 internationals for Mexico said after a team practice at Suwon late Tuesday. There's nothing more important about making international appearance No. 157 than there was about earning international cap No. 2, or so he claims. His only focus is a winning start for Mexico. Suarez is one game behind Egypt's Hossam Hassan as the most-capped player of all time. He should draw level with Hassan in the Australia vs. Mexico match and, all going well, he should surpass the record in Mexico's second game against South Korea on June 1.

    Bosnich denies goalkeeping allegations
Faces down claims of interest in football by Alan Roberts Shamed suave soccer superstar, Mark "Bozzy" Bosnich has vowed to fight on in his heart-rending battle to get back his former place as Chelsea's top drug user. The Australian's month of shame continued when an FA football testing unit dropped in at the London team's training ground and reportedly caught Bozzy indulging in a quick spot of five-a-side. Charges were immediately brought against the former Manchester United bench-warmer amid allegations that he retains some interest in the game. However, the big-boned Aussie has vigorously defended himself, maintaining that he was simply standing around when some of his team mates were kicking a ball. "It's guilt by association," he whined, "as opposed to guilt by association football. I swear I've never done anything to help Chelsea on the football pitch since I arrived." However even if the FA charges are defeated, Bosnich is expected to face a great deal of competition for the number one banned substances spot at Chelsea from such other dedicated members of the Blues bloated squad including Jody Morris and John Terry.

The quest by Australia's Olyroos to make its third Olympic Games in succession depends on the outcome of a qualifying tournament in Canada after this magazine has been printed. If the Olyroos come through this tournament in Edmonton, they will have the opportunity to go one better than their highly respectable fourth behind Spain, Poland and Ghana in Barcelona four years ago. In the previous Olympic Games, in Seoul in 1988, the Olyroos made the final eight, only to go down three-nil to the eventual gold medallist, the Soviet Union, which put Brazil into second place for the second Games in a row. Both performances by the Olyroos underlined the growing stature of Australia as a force in world football. The eligibility rules for football, or soccer as it is known in Australia, at the Olympic Games have been going through constant revision, and are changing again for Atlanta.

Design by Chris Hughes. Home Articles March 2004 Australian Soccer: why is there a competition? This article will examine the highlights and lowlights of Australian soccer through the eyes of a 19 year old Welsh-Australian. It will look at the history behind the game, the league and some of its teams, prominent players and its successes (well, more like failures) at the World Cup. So sit back, and stand by to laugh your arse off at Australian soccer. The NSL was formed in 1977 and has been current for 27 years, although some of the clubs have origins from before this time. Currently, it comprises 13 teams from around Australia, mostly from the state capital cities. On average, soccer is the most played sport ahead of golf, AFL (Australian Rules Football) and Rugby Union. However, it does not share as much of the limelight of these other sports. The previous administration called Soccer Australia attempted, quite poorly might I add, to increase knowledge of the game, but seemed to fail miserably. It was purely due to the large numbers of European immigrants that soccer became the most played.

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 19th Mar 1997. Middlesbrough v Blackburn Rovers - Peter White eyes another successful Teesside import IT'S not easy to be noticed when you are a relatively-unknown Australian goalkeeper treading the same turf as some of the biggest names in the game. Unless that is your name happens to be Mark Schwarzer. Italians Fabrizio Ravanelli and Gianluca Festa, Teesside's Brazilian blend of Juninho and Emerson, Danish star Mikkel Beck - those are the autographs clamoured for by most visitors to the Riverside Stadium. But Schwarzer, a recent addition to Middlesbrough boss Bryan Robson's impressive list of overseas stars, is fast becoming the man most feared by opposition forwards.
