Back to Home Bolton want Bosnich BOLTON WANDERERS have made a bold bid to revive the disgraced, drug-tainted career of Socceroo goalkeeper Mark Bosnich in the English Premier League. The Australian last night learned Bolton manager Sam Allardyce had contacted Bosnich's British agents Jerome Anderson and Jeff Weston to sign the shot-stopper, who has a drugs charge hanging over his head, to the club which is fourth last on the league table.
Weston confirmed the offer had been made to Bosnich. "We can't act on it until the drug hearing has been finalised," Weston said.
Bosnich, who has been receiving treatment for depression at The Priory, a clinic at Roehampton in west London, was getting better "slowly".
"He remains under the care of a psychologist for severe clinical depression," Weston said.
Bosnich, who was officially sacked by Chelsea less than 24 hours ago, has until tomorrow to prepare a written defence to a charge of having tested positive to cocaine.

Diegos Verdict: Good hands, brave and a screw loose, all the qualities you'd expect in any one of the big number of world class shot stoppers born and bred 'Downunder' currently plying their trade overseas.. Filan went through a purple patch at Blackburn Rovers in the EPL a few seasons ago but under Graham Souness was relegated to number two behind 'Big Bubba' USA international goalkeeper, Brad Friedel in the 2001 / 2002 campaign. With no chance of regular first team football and even less of a chance of beating Souness in a fistfight, Filan departed for Wigan Athletic where first team footy has again put a 'snap' in his shorts.
Some Golden Soft Sombrero Moments with John Filan Diegos: " Aussie goalkeepers are certainly the flavour of the month in the UK at the moment. Of the three plying their trade in the English premiership - Bosnich, Schwarzer and yourself, it seems that you're the one who prompts the question "who the hell is this Aussie upstart with the gloves on? The Diegos know that you are the great John Filan but can you tell the rest of Australia about your soccer travels since you left home many years ago?"

HOME SOCCER RUGBY CRICKET ... EPL Fantasy THE GILES FILES: Fear of the penalty kick Story Tools: Print Email GILES ELLIOTT / FOXSports.com Posted: 1470 days ago It's been a bad week for Dutch goalkeepers. In Dublin last Saturday, Fulham's Edwin van der Sar was powerless to prevent Holland's tumble out of the World Cup (never good for the overall quality of the tournament). Over on the bench, Sander Westerveld cut a forlorn figure. Following his game-losing error at Bolton, the Liverpool keeper was digesting his club's astonishing decision to replace him with, not one, but two new shot-stoppers, on the same day. Say hello to Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. Wave goodbye to the Sander-man. At 26, Westerveld is still an infant in goalkeepers years, and he will have no problems finding a new club. Over the two seasons since he arrived at Anfield, the Dutch number two has seen Liverpool not only win five trophies but become the English Premier League's best defensive team, conceding seven fewer goals than Manchester United and 12 less than Arsenal. That's not just down to the influence of Sami Hyppia. The back four must play as a unit, and Liverpool will inevitably suffer as Polish international Dudek seeks to gain an understanding with the Finnish/German/English/Swiss combo in front of him. So why the 'one strike and you're out'?

    Matter of Public Importance
    Miss BURTON

It has been rightly pointed out that Soccer Australia needs to become stronger, and the organisation is being reformed. We need to do even more to develop our elite players. That is why the State Government set up the Premier's Soccer Task Force to look at how we can improve elite soccer in this State, and appointed Mr Johnny Warren as the Premier's special adviser on soccer development. The task force is chaired by Johnny Warren, who will meet with soccer clubs, players, coaches and managers across the State. A soccer summit held recently in Wollongong attracted more than 50 representatives of the Illawarra's 10,000 registered soccer players. The task force report will be finalised by the end of November. This Government is planning ahead to ensure that we have the best possible team playing in the Australian World Cup in 2014.
Illawarra Mercury on Saturday 26 October, he enjoyed this exchange:

Can you name a radio station, or a sporting team?

    Urgent Motion
    Mr TRIPODI
    (Fairfield) [3.51 p.m.]: I move:
That this House supports Australia's bid to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and welcomes initiatives by the State Government to develop soccer in New South Wales.
The Sydney Olympic Games, the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne are all massive international undertakings and the right to host them all has been won by Australia. We are the country to which world organisations are turning to deliver major sporting events. Thanks to the best-ever Olympics, our credentials are now recognised throughout the world. As the Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks, says, "We are winning these events because of our outstanding reputation." We showed we have the infrastructure, technical expertise and the dedicated volunteers to deliver the best-ever Olympics-the best not by an inch but by a mile. The annual Grands Prix, the State of Origin, the Rugby League and Australian Rules Grand Finals, the Bledisloe Cup and other rugby union test matches continue to confirm our management abilities.
This expertise was one of the key reasons why on 14 August the Premier, in conjunction with the Victorian Government, announced that Australia would bid to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the world's biggest single sporting event. The 2006 cup will be held in Germany, while the 2010 event has been designated to Africa. I would like to point out that none other than the FIFA President, Mr Sepp Blatter, who attended Sydney Opera House for the announcement, immediately supported Australia's plan for a bid-as did every State and Territory government and Soccer Australia, who, as the nation's soccer federation, would officially present the bid. Why should these groups not support it? It is a very serious bid.

Z Mark Bosnich Biography Mark Bosnich (born January 13, 1972), is Australia's best ever soccer goalkeeper, representing his country on many occasions and playing for English Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
Growing up in Fairfield, a suburb of Sydney, Bosnich played briefly for Sydney Croatia (a team in the Australian National Soccer League), before moving, at age 16, to join Manchester United. After two seasons there, he left to join Aston Villa, where he made his reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His appearances with the Australian national team were quite rare (as indeed they are for most Australian players, as a full-strength Australian side is only assembled for World Cup qualification playoffs), but memorable, keeping Australia in the away leg of its home-and-away playoff with Iran to enter the 1996 Cup. His heroics were wasted after midfield defensive errors and missed opportunities allowed Iran a 2-2 draw in the home leg and thus let them through on away goals.
In 1999 he transferred back to Manchester United but it was not a happy move as he was soon relegated to third-choice keeper. He chose to stay at United and try to regain his spot rather than accept being loaned to Scottish club Celtic. He transferred to Chelsea in 2001, but again failed to gain a place in the first team.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND goalkeeper Shay Given is out of the team to play Macedonia at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday night after undergoing an operation on his knee in Newcastle yesterday afternoon.
Given was injured in training at the AUL complex in Clonshaugh last Wednesday.
Hopes that he was suffering from nothing more than a 'locked knee' were dashed after X-rays and a scan on the knee at the Mater Hospital.
The examinations showed Given had damaged the cartilage in his knee so he returned to Newcastle for the operation.
He could be out for up to eight weeks but is expected to be fit in time to start his pre-season training with Newcastle.
Irish manager Mick McCarthy has two other goalkeepers in his squad for the Euro 2000 Championship qualifier with Macedonia.
Sheffield United's Alan Kelly looks likely to take over in goal for the game with Dean Kiely of Charlton Athletic deputising.
Kelly has 21 Irish caps while Kiely has yet to make his senior debut.

Mark Bosnich, the Australian goalkeeper who once brought politics into football by giving a fascist salute at White Hart Lane, suggests he was purged by Alex Ferguson at Manchester United: "It was a personality thing - we are very similar characters. I think it was because I was right wing in politics and he was left wing. I think that is why he didn't like me. He wanted all communists in his team. We talked politics a couple of times and we fell out big style. I remember arguing about Maggie Thatcher. I am a big fan and he wasn't. He said she ruined the country. I said she was the best leader since Churchill. We had a massive row after a game at Sunderland and he was late getting on the bus because he had been meeting Tony Blair. OK, it's not quite the end of the season, but I'm getting in before all the real football brains give us the benefit of their wisdom. Team of the Season Ipswich has done amazingly well with very little. Fulham also, but with quite a lot spent on them. But the team of the season has to be Leeds. Each time they progressed in Europe, I thought, that's it, they'll be found out now, it can't go on, they just haven't got the strength or class of Man Utd or Arsenal; then there was the court case, still with us, that might distract, if not derail, Lee Bowyer at least. But behold and lo, did not Leeds do well.
