41. U.S. Analysis: Keller’s Heroics Can Only Go So Far In Holding Off Superior Germ
Four minutes later, oliver bierhoff was standing alone on the US sixyard result of a long flight after a hard Saturday night Major League soccer match.

U.S. men's schedule
Second-half outburst sends Germany past U.S. 4-2 despite Mathis pair. There was little friendly about the American victory over Ecuador. Mathis, Donovan each net pair in 4-0 rout of overmatched Honduras. ... U.S. generated no real attack in setback to Italy, but scrappy defense was impressive. U.S.-Germany analysis
Keller’s heroics can only go so far in holding off superior German side from 4-2 triumph.
(Wednesday, March 27, 2002) Thanks to some stellar goalkeeping from Kasey Keller, the United States managed to hold on barely - for the first hour against Germany tonight in a friendly match between two nations honing their rosters for the World Cup which starts in just over two months. In the final 30 minutes, there was no stemming the flood. Coach Bruce Arena cannot be very happy with a 4-2 loss to the Germans before a sellout crowd of 29,000 at Osteestadionwhat in Rostock tonight. The U.S. was outfought, outmuscled and outhustled by a bigger, taller stronger opponent. From the start, the Germans moved the ball quickly and created numerous chances. They completely dominated the midfield and kept the U.S. back on its heels from the opening whistle. Excellent first-half defensive efforts by David Regis on the left side, and Jeff Agoos and Eddie Pope in the middle of the back line, helped stem the German attack. It was Keller, however, who kept the Americans in the match.

German Team Wins Soccer World Cup Test Match Against U.S.
TWIG - The German national soccer team defeated the U.S. national team 4 to 2 in a pre-World Cup test game on Thursday night (March 27) in the eastern German port town of Rostock. The victory came after two straight losses to the U.S. team in shutouts in 1999, and brings the record to 4-2-0 in six matchups between the two countries. The International Friendly, played before a sell-out crowd of nearly 29,000 fans, was the first time the U.S. team had played on German soil since reunification. U.S. forward Clint Mathis of the New Jersey MetroStars scored both of his team’s goals, with the first point scored in the 17th minute of the game. But Germany evened things up just before half-time when captain Chris Ziege scored on a free kick past U.S. goalie Kasey Keller. After the half, Germany scored three more goals over eight minutes with Oliver Neuville (Bayer-Leverkusen), Oliver Bierhoff (AS Monaco/65) and Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen/68) all connecting. Mathis’ second goal came in the 71st minute to cut the German lead to two. "I am satisfied with the effort," legendary German national coach Rudi Voeller said after the game. "The players gave their all from the first to the last minute, even if the team was a bit pieced together. The guys who have been there for the last two years have tremendous character."

The ironic thing is that it was the man who got the Germans this far that spelled the end - Oliver Kahn. After some initial Brazilian pressure, the Germans began to assert themselves and control the pace. Suprisingly, it was not a completely negative performance. Relatively crisp passing and quick attacks, especially over Neuville allowed the Germans to apply pressure on the Brazilain defense. However, despite winning lots of corners, the German air game was neutralized by the tall Brazilian defensers, who were easily up to the task. Furthermore, once the Germans got to the penalty zone, they lacked ideas; clearly they could have used suspended Michael Ballack. The Brazilians meanwhile, were clearly having trouble with the solid German defense and midfield. Rivaldo and Ronaldinho Gaucho were basically worthless, although Ronaldo looked dangerous when he had the ball. Most of the time Linke was able to contain him. Then, with about 5 minutes left in the half, the Brazlians put together a nice series of assaults, starting with Kleberson's shot off the crossbar, as he caught Kahn off his line. Again, a couple of moments later, Kahn came up with a nice save off Ronaldo's point blank shot after a scramble. At half-time, the game was still up for grabs.

Attendance: 22,000 Referee: Nilsson (Sweden) Yellow cards: Jeremies - Jumah, Mutairi, Najem Not much of a test as the Germans kicked ass in this lopsided encounter. The team wasn't too impressive, although Oliver Bierhoff did have a good match. As a result of all the changes, and some missing starters, the DFB squad was a bit unorganized at times, but it didn't matter much. Even the Kuwaiti squad was trying out new players. The basic German strategy was to dominate the air with high balls, although they did try some passing combinations as well. Given the opponent, the strategy was more offensive then normal.

The latest I've heard is Torres coming to Bayern. I personally don't believe it for he's so expensive and Bayern isn't a big money spending club. You have Poldi, as good a player as Torres, and certainly cheeper. He must be a priority for Bayern.
Van Buyten and Mertesacker are linked with Bayern too.
With Philipp Lahm back in the frame what do you make of this:
Kahn - Gorlitz, Lucio, Mertesacker, Lahm - Demichelis (Frings), Ballack, Deisler, Schweini - Makaay, Poldi. (and you have 7-8 Germans in the line-up)

The Rossoneri began the new season at the San Siro against Vicenza, only days after a famous victory at the Nou Camp.
There were a few changes from the team that ran out against Barça, with Christian Abbiati replacing Dida in goal and Leonardo forming a front three alongside Oliver Bierhoff and Andriy Shevchenko.
Massimo Ambrosini, Francesco Coco and Gianni Commandini have all had stretches of time with Vicenza, while Giuseppe Cardone and Fabio Vivani have both played for the Rossoneri, so the two sides certainly needed no introducing.
Rain and cold greeted the teams as they come out onto the turf of the San Siro, but the excitement of the occasion soon raised the temperature.
Milan did well to close down the options for the visitors, with the flanks especially closely guarded, as they sought to prevent the Vicenza captain, Lamberto Zauli, from making the dangerous excursions for which he is known.
In the first half Milan found themselves losing the ball rather too easily thanks to the pressure that the visitors put on the Rossonero midfield.

Germany ponders the unthinkable. Could you have scripted the drama any better? Becks sends England to Korea/Japan with a very clutch free kick after Germany stalls against much-improved Finland. The final day of European group nine World Cup qualifying was so riveting and compelling, I wish the World Cup started yesterday. Germany's lack of finishing severely undermined Plan-B. Otto Rehhagel's Greece held up their end of the deal, playing their best qualifier at Old Trafford. Despite the draw in Gelsenkirchen, Germany looked on their way to Asia only to see the English skipper's equalizer moments later. The proverbial salt in the wound. Qualification through a playoff is new ground for the three-time World Cup winners. Germany has missed the Finals only twice, in 1930 and 1950, both times for political reasons. For the opposing Ukraine, playoffs aren't anything new. They were narrowly beaten by Croatia for a spot in France '98 undone by a dubious linesman's flag that ruled out a vital goal for the hosts in Kiev. HOME SOCCER RUGBY CRICKET ... EPL Fantasy DOUBLE DEUTSCH: Germany must conquer Ukraine before Asia Story Tools: Print Email Allen Hopkins / FOXSports.com Posted: 1436 days ago So much for Plan-B. Croatia squeaked through, beat Germany in the quarterfinals, and placed third in the Finals. Talk about making the most of an opportunity.
