Kahn to be named German skipper
Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will replace striker Oliver Bierhoff as Germany captain, coach Rudi Voeller said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.
'We want to bring calm into the team with this decision so that the issue isn't brought up before every game,' Voeller said in the interview, to be published on Sunday. Bierhoff has increasingly found himself on the national team bench rather than in the starting line-up while Kahn, his deputy until now, has become steadily more accustomed to wearing the captain's armband. The 33-year-old Bierhoff recently moved from AC Milan to AS Monaco to guarantee more regular first team football. Bierhoff, who won the first of his 59 caps in February 1996, replaced Juergen Klinsmann as captain in September 1998.

Germany among the worst of the best GERMANY PROFILE: Lacking in ingenuity and at times looking utterly confused, Germany are not the footblling powerhouse they once were, writes Paul Doyle Those Irish fans who hoped to be paired with England to prove we’re better will now have to rely on us beating Germany 6-1 to shut up our lippy neighbours. ireland.com is prepared to put its reputation for uncanny soothsaying on the line by predicting that won’t happen. Nevertheless, we’re confident Roy Keane and company can beat the auld enemy’s old enemy. Germany are the top seeds largely because they won the competition in 1990. Their performances since then have been anything but intimidating: they were knocked out of USA ’94 by Bulgaria, trounced at France ’98 by Croatia, and finished bottom of their group at Euro 2000.

    Double ends the pain
Emmet Malone in Yokohama Brazil 2 Germany Ronaldo slots the ball past Oliver Kahn to give Brazil the lead in the final of the World Cup
JUL 1st: And so, for Ronaldo, the cycle is complete. Four years after one World Cup final was lost because, legend will have it, of his inability to perform when it mattered most, another has been won thanks to his brilliance. Finally, the 25-year-old can put behind him the pain he endured in Paris and reflect instead on the glory in which he basked yesterday at Yokohama. As he stood on the sidelines and wept with joy during the closing minutes of his team's victory, there was no doubting how desperately he had yearned for this redemption.

Euro 1996 was Germany's return to superpower status. Historically, England 1996 also gave us a preview of rising football nations like the Czech Republic, Croatia and France. First Round Group A England Switzerland Holland Scotland Holland Switzerland England Scotland Scotland Switzerland Holland England Team G W T L GD P England Holland Scotland Switzerland Group A of the 1996 European Championship started off with some controversy. Shrearer scored England's first goal from an obvious offside. Switzerland came back in the 83rd minute from a penalty. In the following match from this group, Scotland earned a draw after one of their defenders cleared the ball from the goalline with his hand. England's second match (against Scotland) featured one of the most beautiful goals ever. Paul Gascoine dazzled audiences world-wide with a spectacularly setup volley. Group B Spain Bulgaria Romania France Bulgaria Romania France Spain France Bulgaria Spain Romania Team G W T L GD P France Spain Bulgaria Romania This was considered as one of the strongest groups in the Euro. Future world champion France managed to finish on top. Bulgaria failed to reproduce their success from World Cup 1994. In their last match, they lost to France with 3-1 giving up silly goals. Romania, who also did well in USA '94, started off with two losses solidifying an early return home.

Voller has won both his games in charge so far including the first 2002 World Cup qualifier next month and now Germany face England on October 7th. The coach has stayed loyal to the players who defeated Greece 2-0 last month with Oliver Bierhoff retained in the squad despite being dropped to the bench for the win over Greece. There is a good chance that Bierhoff will start the game at Wembley though. Liverpool's Christian Ziege returns to the line up but his start to an Anfield career has seen question marks raised over his level of fitness after a long and bitter transfer process from Middlesbrough during the summer. Jorge Heinrich is injured with a hamstring strain and misses the game allowing Ziege to get a recall. Hamburg SV defender Ingo Hertzsch is on the only new cap made by Voller. The squad in full - Goalkeepers - Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich) and Jens Lehmann (Borussia Dortmund).

Dinamo Moscow's captain and goalkeeper Lev Yachine (L) stands next to English midfielder Bobby Charlton during the presentation of the players participating to the friendly match between Dinamo Moscow and FIFA's "Rest of the World" selection, 28 May 1971 in Moscow. If one looks back at the history of the competition some of the greats who shone in it immediately spring to mind. 'The black spider' Lev Yashin in the Soviet Union net for instance or the German defender known as 'the Kaiser' Franz Beckenbauer. There are magical midfielders such as Michel Platini, Ruud Gullit and Zinedine Zidane, or strikers like Brian Laudrup, Jurgen Klinsmann and Marco van Basten. A mouth-watering selection of the influential players who have engraved their names, as winners, into the European championships' history books. A competition which, after it was last staged in 2000, gave France a second win at the first edition to be jointly hosted by two nations, Belgium and the Netherlands.

World Cup 2002 News UpDaTe World awaits historic clash
The World Cup final between Germany and Brazil on Sunday in Yokohama brings together two teams with very different football philosophies.
In the white corner are the artisans of Germany - hard-working, willing to run all day, but a side that has yet to set the pulse racing during this World Cup.
In the yellow corner are the artists of Brazil, the original exponents of the beautiful game, a team that rarely scores ugly goals.
Remarkably this is the first time the two teams have met in the World Cup, even though all post-war finals except one have featured one of the two countries.
Despite that impressive track record, neither side were fancied to win the World Cup at the start of the tournament.
Back in May bookmakers priced Brazil at odds of between 6-1 and 13-2 to win the World Cup. Germany were considered even less of a chance at odds ranging between 12-1 to 16-1.

News Bulletin Current Affairs World War II ... Mobile The Future Beckons for Klinsmann's Germany J¼rgen Klinsmann looks ahead to the 2006 World Cup not back to 2002 Talk of avenging the 2-0 World Cup final defeat against Wednesday night's opponents Brazil has been dismissed by German coach J¼rgen Klinsmann. The friendly in Berlin will be all about Germany's future not its past.
Germany's new national team chief J¼rgen Klinsmann pits his fledgling coaching skills against the World Champions Brazil on Wednesday night in his first real test as head of the country's soccer stars. And the former Germany striker is optimistic his fully fit and highly motivated side can build on the 3-1 success over Austria in his first game to wipe away the still painful memories of the 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Brazilians in the 2002 World Cup final. "A coach couldn't wish for a better opportunity," beamed Klinsmann at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "I'm absolutely convinced there will be an explosive atmosphere."

News Bulletin Current Affairs World War II ... Mobile Klinsmann Ready to Take Charge of Team Germany The new face of German soccer? German soccer shouldn't hail its new national coach yet. Although J¼rgen Klinsmann says he's keen to take on the job, the details still have to be hammered out and there is always room for a surprise.
The former Germany captain and world cup player wants to become his country's next national coach. In previous discussions Klinsmann had already said he was willing to help the Germany team but had been vague about exactly what his role would be. Now that his name is on the table along with Oliver Bierhoff as team manager and Holger Osieck as co-trainer, Klinsmann is more up front about his ambitions. "My role should be that of team coach," he told a news conference at the Frankfurt airport on Saturday.

We welcome your feedback NEWSLETTER Send us your email to subscribe to our newsletter DISABLED-FRIENDLY FUNCTIONALITY Germans douse Seoul fire Seoul, June 25 By Payal Dhar Germany outclassed South Korea 1-0 to advance into their seventh World Cup final. It was sweet and sour for Michael Ballack, the goalscorer, who will miss the final after having picked up a second yellow card. Germany will meet either Turkey or Brazil. South Korea started without their star Ahn Jung Hwan, while Carsten Ramelow got a chance to start for Germany. The Koreans were in red jerseys and grey shorts, and the Germans were in their ususal white jerseys and black shorts. The crowd was predictably just a sea of red, which went mad the moment anyone in a red shirt got the ball. The Germans were keen to show who the boss was on the pitch as Carsten Ramelow stirred up 'keeper Lee Woon Jae in the second minute with an attempt from about 10 yards away, even though he didn't get much on it. However, the first real save of the match came from Oliver Kahn, who had to fly to his right to palm away a stinging attempt. And that was about the most the Koreans came to threatening the German goal in the first half.
