The broadcaster has announced that it has signed on Indian football skipper Baichung Bhutia to promote the Uefa Euro 2004 Championship. Uefa Euro 2004 will showcase 31 matches from 12 June to 4 July 2004. ESS also announced that its coverage of the tournament will also feature Hindi commentary and analysis. The contest which kicks off today on the channel will provide soccer crazy fans to win attractive prizes. Weekend The new Turks The growing popularity of stars like Narain Karthikeyan and Sania Mirza is proof that there’s more to Indian sport than just cricket. Arundhati Basu reports NARAIN KARTHIKEYAN Has Sania Mirza ever belted a cherry-red ball towards the boundary? And is Narain Karthikeyan ever likely to get out from his F1 Jordan to send a cricket ball soaring over the pavilion? The answer is clearly: no. But, in a cricket-crazy nation, both Mirza and Karthikeyan are proving it’s possible to be a sporting hero — or heroine — even if you’ve never hit a century or scored a hat-trick. They belong to a new breed of non-cricketers attaining heroic status in the eyes of India’s younger generation. Nowadays sporting heroes are measured by their advertising endorsements. And Karthikeyan and Mirza are proving that their popularity can be turned into advertising megabucks. Though the figures haven’t been released, it’s clear that a handful of companies will be spending millions to keep Karthikeyan on the tracks.

FOOTBALL/WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN
Why India isn't good enough
ROHIT BRIJNATH "PHYSICS," said the speaker. Physics? we asked. What do Newton and gang have to do with football? The place was the Oberoi Grand Hotel. The time, a decade ago. The subject, why India isn't a footballing power. And the speaker, P. K. Banerjee, once player, then coach, always raconteur. Of course, 'physics' had nothing to do with it. With due deference to the enlightened and amusing PK, it was merely a case of mangled pronunciation. What he meant was "physique". Or rather the lack of it, which in his opinion was one of the primary reasons why India was unable to compete on the world stage. Just a handful and more kilometres away, in those days, at the Salt Lake Stadium, PK's theory was being vindicated, courtesy Chima Okerie. Okerie was not a great player by any measurement, maybe not even a very good one, but in India he was a star. Undoubtedly he had a striker's instinct for goal, but his speed arrived from muscular thighs, his ability to shrug off tackles and the close marking of his diminutive peers due to his powerful body. Some years later, in 1998, when I was researching the shift in most sports from subtlety to power, and how that leaves India at a disadvantage, I quoted George Blues, then technical director at FC Kochin, who said: "If I. M. Vijayan kicks the ball at 90mph, Ronaldo's would easily be 90mph."

The Kolkata giant had a string of successes, filling up its repository with a rich harvest of records. While the National team didn't do anything spectacular, the departing soccer season underlined the exploits of East Bengal, which contrived matchless feats in almost everything it participated in.
On the flip side, all of East Bengal's splendour and dazzle in the season failed to hide the erosion creeping into the sport in the State. East Bengal's effort remained a secluded spot of brilliance in the general spectre of gloom surrounding the sport in Kolkata, which reflected in the banishment of the remaining teams of the city to the bottom of the NFL table.

Islamic Games probables called for India soccer series By Rashid Ali Siddiqui KARACHI: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) have decided to call all the probables of the Islamic Solidarity Games for the three-match series against the touring Indian team at the short conditioning camp in Quetta. "The programme to invite the probables for the series and the camp are being given final shape. The probables will include 26 those who had attended the camp for the first Islamic Games while some other senior players may also be invited," disclosed Lt-Col (retd) Mujahidullah Khan, Director Technical, PFF, on Thursday from Lahore. He said since the series would start from the opening match in Quetta, the camp might be set up there. Pakistan’s chief coach Umar Farooq Tariq Lutfi, however, is unaware of any such development. Talking to ‘The News’, he said that though none of the PFF officials consulted him on the formation of the team, yet he had suggested inviting the Islamic Games probables for the Indian team’s tour to Pakistan. "The decisions on the team and its preparations will be taken in two to three days and Lutfi may be retained as coach with some other coaches being appointed to assist him," the PFF spokesman said.

(Chuckles) Yes, I am. I have known her for a long time now and we were looking for the right opportunity to marry. We will do this at my village (Tinkitam) and in true Buddhist style.
(Laughs) Madhuri has seen me for the last seven-eight years and has shared all my highs and lows on the soccer field. Honestly, nothing will change. If I play well in the New Year, it will be due to the sheer hard work I am putting to get back to competitive football. You missed the last couple of World Cup qualifiers and then the Durand and Federation Cups. Are you ready for the National League that starts mid-January?
Like all knee injuries, mine was quite serious. I was careful not to aggravate it. And hence skipped a couple of tournaments. According to our club coach (Subhas Bhowmick), the NFL is the most important tournament for us and you will see me in full action. With six teams from Goa, how competitive will be this National League?

FOCUS / East Bengal’s ASEAN triumph a boon for the sport
Winning across the Bay
THE Maidan is roaring again. Adorned in red and gold, the heart of Kolkata is speaking the language it knows best the language of the universal game as explained by its leading club in forceful terms at Jakarta last weekend.
East Bengal’s historic win in the final of the ASEAN Club Championship has taken the city back to its glory days, when football ruled the heart and minds. Like the rickety stands that dot the boundaries of the Maidan, the soccer system of the city too had moved to an unsafe plane when the champion club seized the moment and showed a way out with their splendid triumph.
Forty-one years after the Indian national team had notched its second gold medal success in the Asian Games, East Bengal’s win at the same venue generates a cause for celebration not just in Kolkata, but countrywide. It’s not often that an Indian team brings a trophy home but more than that fact, it’s the manner in which the club went about its task that holds out hope for Indian football.
“It’s a big achievement for Indian football,” said Baichung Bhutia, the captain of the national team and East Bengal’s man with the golden boot. “The countries from South East Asia had left us behind in recent times. A few years back, we even suffered defeats by five and seven-goal margins to these teams. From that point of view, our performance is very significant,” added Bhutia, who led the way for the Indian champions.

It's not just cricket Rina Chandran As soccer, tennis, motor racing and other sports grow in popularity, advertisers are realising that hitching their brands to them is a good way to be `with it'. IT was 37 degrees C in the shade at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, in Chennai, and Chepauk stadium was filled with 15,000 enthusiastic fans. Only, it wasn't a cricket match they had come to see, but the FIFA World Cup final, telecast live on the giant screen in the stadium. Football in cricket-crazy Chennai, that too on the hallowed grounds of Chepauk? Not a momentary lapse of reason but a sign of the times, industry experts say, and one which advertisers and networks are cashing in on. TEN Sports, which was launched in April this year and had the rights to the FIFA World Cup, has a line-up of WWE, golf, tennis, hockey and bowling. On ESPN-Star Sports, the English Premier League matches and Formula 1 races are a big draw. The Tata group, which signed on Narain Karthikeyan early this year, is also the title sponsor of the ATP Tennis Tournament; McDowell endorses two football clubs and recently sponsored an inter-club golf tournament. And a whole host of companies are revving up at the racetrack.

People of Bengal are sports crazy and the craziness is most apparent in Calcutta. Though Indians have a long way to go to make a mark in the world sports scene, the fan following for different sports is tremendous. The most popular games are football and cricket. The top football clubs of India are based in Calcutta. Thousands watch soccer matches in the maidan club grounds of the big three - Mohun Bagan East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting . The Calcutta Football Club was founded in 1872. Mohan Bagan was founded in 1889 and they won the Indian Football Association (IFA) shield in 1911 by defeating a British team. YOU GOTTA KICK IT!
India? Soccer? Sounds weird doesn't it? Well East Bengal stunned the Asian football circuit by reaching the Asean Cup finals and added a (rare) feather to India's hat by clinching a memorable victory which will be remembered for a long time. It is a pity that the world's most popular sport is played with enthusiasm in only sparse places in a vast country like India. The reason? There are many. People in India are absolutely head-over-heels crazy over that one game - Cricket. Naturally there is support and backing up only for youngsters exhibiting talent in cricket. Due to this, football and other sports are ignored and people remain unaware of the soccer scene in the world.
India has produced world-class footballers in the form of Baichung Bhutia, I M Vijayan and Joe Paul Ancheri so there is no doubt there is good football in the blood of Indians. It is requisite that football be promoted to the distant corners of India. Currently, the game is relished only in areas like Bengal, Goa and Kerala. Lets hope the king of all sports will be spread in the various regions of our country and one day we will indeed find India battling it out with the giants like Brazil and Argentina.
