George and George are best for Liberia Posted: Tuesday January 15, 2002 5:15 PM
MONROVIA (Reuters) Liberia's coach Dominic Vava George lives in the shadow of his best known player George Weah, who is also technically his boss. George is the coach of the Liberian side but Weah serves as the technical director of the Liberia team, in theory in charge of all the support staff surrounding the side. It effectively means that the Liberian side is coached by committee, with Weah directing tactics and substitutions from his position the field and Vava George doing the same from his position on the bench. Vava George, 54, is a former Liberian international and coach of the Monrovia club Mighty Barolle, who he took to the domestic league title in 2000. He has been coach of the team since mid-2000, when he took over from Kadalah Kromoh and has seen Liberia win 10 of his 19 matches in charge of the side. Reuters Limited

Periscoping Liberian Soccer
-Merits and Demerits

By Bill B. Blamo
Liberian soccer has come of age and no doubt the apparent success of the country's national soccer team, the Lone Star, should be commended.
As history states, Liberian soccer began to come into the fore when the late President Samuel Kanyon Doe gave soccer some recognition in contrast to the old adage of 'football was gronah boy's game'. Football was given so much national attention by the Doe's Administration to an extent where huge amounts of hard currency of the people's taxes were directed.
Liberian soccer also benefitted during that regime by witnessing the completion of a modern sport stadium named: the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.
Soccer technicians at the time decided to use these monies wisely were they turned to improve Liberian soccer by turning to the Brazilian soccer for improvement. As we all may know, the Lone Star at that time was privileged to go over to Brazil to get a taste of the Brazilian soccer.
No doubt that Liberian soccer has to improve since then because, with such talents of our boys being tapped in this great nation, and the infusion of some Brazilians on the team by naturalizing them as Liberian citizens to play on the national team, strengthened the Lone Star. Those Brazilians included Carlos Sergio, Striker; Luis Nancimento and Filho Doracy, defenders; and Eddie Mathies, goalkeeper.

UEFA Soccer Star Curtis Allen, 17, of Bournemouth, Is an “Irish Rooney,” Hits 37 Goals for Season
The UEFA Irish soccer player, who is being compared to a young David Beckham, is getting attention from the top football clubs in Europe. Curtis Allen hopes to be selected for the Northern Ireland Under-19 soccer team for the massive Under-19 continental tournament to be held in Belfast in July. He is the biggest thing to hit Northern Ireland soccer in 25 years. (PRWEB via PR Web Direct ) May 7, 2005 The phenomenal young UEFA Irish football player, Curtis Allen, 17, from the AFC Bournemouth Coca-Cola League, finished the 2004-05 season with 37 goals in 33 games, including nine international goals for Northern Ireland’s U-17/U-19 teams. No other Northern Ireland football player has scored more international goals in a season at international level for decades, and Allen is hoping his performance will earn him a spot on the Under-19 team in a continental soccer tournament in Belfast in July.
Monitored by Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Charlton and Wolves and compared to a young David Beckham or Wayne Rooney, Allen also had a spectacular season for AFC Bournemouth FC, scoring in friendly matches and for the Reserves’ Under-18 team and Brockenhurst College’s (Bournemouth U-18) team.

Collecting videotapes of old sports and TV shows has sentimental value for me. When I was growing up it seemed as though baseball, football and soccer were the most important things in the world. I felt like professional athletes were my friends. (Of course they weren't my friends, but the illusion was comforting nonetheless.) I've spent years searching for (and finding) videotapes of the North American Soccer League (NASL) . I also collect international soccer and women's soccer tapes. I'm also starting to collect old news programs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. If you recorded any old news programs, please let me know. All of these games are the complete original broadcasts. I'm generally willing to trade for old tapes or other items of historic value. Please e-mail me at DaveBrett@msn.com I want to hear from you! Note: I respond to every email I get . So if you don't hear from me, it means email is screwed up. It happens once in a while. If I don't respond to your email, please send it again.

Charlton may be fairly said to be the most famous English footballer in the world. He epitomises the highest traditions of sportsmanship and integrity. Born 11th October 1937 in Ashington, County Durham, by 19 he had already played in the FA Cup Final. A natural talent, he was a midfield player and striker of great flair and consistency. He played as a forward for Manchester United from 1956 to 1973, having been one of the few survivors of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. A miner's son, born into a footballing family, he had joined United after winning England Schoolboy Inter- national honours. He was a high scoring and individualistic player, noted for his long swerving runs and deadly accuracy with a football.

George Best
Born 22nd May 1946 in Northern Ireland, George Best was one of the most outstanding British soccer players of all time, though his career was short-lived. Described as a "wayward genius", he had a superb sense of timing and balance, and appeared twice as a league championship winner with United and won the "Footballer of the Year" award in 1968.

Soccer great George Best was arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting a woman who feared he was about to attack his former girlfriend.
From TSN.ca,
He was questioned and arrested on allegations by Vicky Pope, who accused him of attacking her outside a house in Ewell, south of London.
She told the Daily Mirror that Best punched her in the neck outside the home of her friend Gina Devivo, one of the soccer star's former girlfriends. Pope claimed Best appeared drunk and said she wanted to protect Devivo.
Phil Hughes, Best's agent, said the former Man U. star "categorically" denied he had punched Pope. There possibly has been some exchange and some jostling, I don't know," Hughes said. alanwkt

How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization
, by Franklin Foer, New York: HarperCollins, 261 pages, $24.95 These days one rarely remembers that soccer legends once traveled to America to die in that elephant’s cemetery known as the North American Soccer League. Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, George Best, Johann Cruyff (who returned to Europe for a few good years), and countless others alighted Stateside to kick a ball around in a country where, even today, professional soccer has not gotten over its image as a distraction for Eurotrash sissies. In one chapter of How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization , Franklin Foer evokes this alleged effetism by using soccer to help explain America’s culture wars. Foer distinguishes two camps that emerged in the U.S. after 9/11. One is cosmopolitan, shares values with Europe, opposes war in Iraq, and, presumably, is amenable to soccer; the other believes in American exceptionalism, views Europeans as lax and degraded, and regards soccer as “a symbol of the U.S. junking its tradition to ‘get with the rest of the world’s program.’” Foer adds that there are exceptions to his dichotomy, and that soccer is a “small touchstone” in the culture wars. But despite the overreach, his book largely succeeds in fulfilling its ambitions: to explain just how soccer and culture interact and, more specifically, to see how soccer works against a backdrop of globalization. It is an often brave effort to make sense of a baffling counterpoint. The first third of the book explores globalization’s failure to erode the game’s great rivalries and the hatreds they can produce. The second uses soccer to address economics: migration, corruption, the rise of soccer oligarchies. The third uses the game to defend the persistence of nationalism as “a way to blunt the return of tribalism.” A running theme is the distance between soccer reality and soccer image.

George Weah is currently campaigning for the presidency of Liberia. According to UN rules, Goodwill Ambassadors cannot serve the organization while engaged in political activities. As a result, he has temporarily stepped aside from his role with UNICEF. International soccer star, George Manneh Weah, knows all about the needs of children in difficult circumstances. He grew up in Liberia’s impoverished capital, Monrovia, where he first learned to play soccer with home-made rag balls. Weah became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on 7 April 1997. “Today one of my dreams has come true – to become part of the UNICEF family,” he said. ‘African Pride’ Weah’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian activities, especially in Africa, has earned him the admiration of many. Nelson Mandela called him the ‘African Pride’. UNICEF has benefited from Weah’s involvement since 1994, when he helped publicize immunization campaigns in Liberia. Since his appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador, Weah’s efforts on behalf of UNICEF have included vital support for HIV/AIDS education programmes and other projects in Ghana and Liberia. For instance, in June 1997 while in Liberia to coach the national team, he promoted vocational training schools where former child soldiers and other war-affected youth can learn new skills. He played in a football match between teams of former child soldiers. He also visited a health clinic, one of more than 50 primary healthcare facilities that have been revitalized by UNICEF.

George Weah, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, visits Sierra Leone
FREETOWN, 12 April 2004 – Former International soccer star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, George Manneh Weah, will be visiting Sierra Leone under the auspices of Kallboxx Production to participate in a number of social and commercial events. UNICEF Sierra Leone and Ambassador George Weah will seize the opportunity to organise a series of social mobilisation activities that will enhance the dissemination of information on HIV/AIDS to adolescents and youths and to give an added thrust to Sierra Leone’s HIV and AIDS prevention programme. Ambassador Weah will be accompanied by equally renowned former international Dutch soccer star, Ruud Gullit and a team of Dutch journalists. George Weah, grew up in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, where he first learnt to play soccer with home-made rag balls. Being a Liberian, Weah understands the needs of children in difficult circumstances. He became UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on 7th April 1997. “Today one of my dreams has come true – become part of the UNICEF family,” he said. Weah and Gullit will tour UNICEF HIV/AIDS programmes within the Western Area and be involved in series of soccer activities from 13th – 15th April. A Dutch TV crew arrived in Sierra Leone on 8th April to film the visit for the UNICEF National Committee of the Netherlands and the Netherlands National Postcode Lottery. The film will be used to raise public awareness among the Dutch audience on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone. In the Netherlands, the National Postcode Lottery is one of the major donors of UNICEF. Every year they donate millions of euros to UNICEF among others. They also assist UNICEF in the Netherlands to make TV-programmes about the work of the organisation all over the world.
