George Tarantini Position:
Head Coach
Experience: 20th season Email: george_tarantini@ncsu.edu For NC State men's soccer coach George Tarantini, the game of soccer belongs to the players. In 19 seasons as the Wolfpack's head coach, his teams have played an exciting, attacking, South American style of soccer that is familiar to the native Argentinian. It has become Tarantini's trademark. "There is a responsibility that we have to assume, because I think the game deserves to be exciting," said Tarantini, whose brother, Alberto, played in two World Cups for Argentina. "The main reason you want to play attacking soccer is that the players want it, the coaches want it and the fans want it. I don't think [soccer] can be played any other way." A former professional player, Tarantini began his coaching career at Arlington (N.Y.) High School in 1976, leading his squad to a 15-1 record and a Class AA Section I title. From there, he spent four years as an assistant at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He came to NC State as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs from 1982-85, before becoming the men's head coach in 1986.

Soccer great George Best arrested
Former Manchester United great George Best was arrested for drink driving early on Friday, police said. "He's been charged with driving while over the alcohol limit. He will be appearing at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday. He has not been detained in custody," a police spokeswoman said. She said the arrest took place shortly after midnight in Merton in southwest London. Best, 57, a former Northern Ireland international and the European Footballer of the Year in 1968, is one of the most gifted players ever to grace the game and was part of the Manchester United side which won the European Cup in 1968. After his career ended in the early 1980s, he relaunched himself as a TV pundit but has attracted controversy due to alcohol problems. He underwent a liver transplant in July 2002 after years of alcohol abuse. Last month he spent 10 hours in jail during Christmas over an alleged assault but was not charged. In 1984 he was sentenced for 12 weeks for drink-driving and assaulting a police officer. His estranged wife Alex is currently appearing nightly in a reality TV show set in a jungle in Australia "I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here" being shown live on British television.

Best, George
Born in Belfast, George Best was, in some eyes, the greatest talent the game of British soccer has ever seen. He was football's first superstar and his fans considered it a tragedy when he walked out on Manchester United in 1972 at the age of 27. Best had it all, superb balance, two good feet, brilliant dribbling skills, a powerful shot, he was even good in the air. The sixties were Best's heyday, he won the a Championship medal twice, a European Cup medal and in 1968 was the European Footballer of the Year. Best's decline is well documented , but ultimately he should be remembered for what he was - a footballing genius. More information available at: Van references in: Part of The Van Morrison Website

(A very rough looking) George Best has called for the football associations north adn south to take a deep breath and join forces to put together a world class soccer team . Meanwhile, Lawrie Sanchez prepares for the England match on Saturday The irrepressible Iain Dowie reckons Northern Ireland has a chance Latvia's miraculous qualification for Euro 2004 is a model for the likes of Northern Ireland. 'Absolutely,' enthuses Dowie. 'There's no question we can get to the finals of a tournament, although it's a difficult task and I do think Lawrie Sanchez needs a better group of players. This [qualifying] group is very good for us because of the massive interest it is generating in Northern Ireland. I never got the chance to play against England and people tell me they are going to turn part of Manchester into a corner of Belfast on the weekend. Hopefully the buzz can re-establish some passion and enthusiasm and boost the finances to help improve future generations.' So would he consider taking the Northern Ireland post one day? 'It is a very difficult job, but what would be attractive is the idea of being able to shape the football set-up from top to bottom, to create the environment to be able to make a difference,' he says.

Best snubs soccer exhibition
Football legend George Best today delivered an embarrassing snub to the game's governing body when he failed to turn up to open a centenary exhibition.
The former Northern Ireland and Manchester United star was said to be asleep in bed when he was due to perform duties at the FIFA display at London's Royal Academy of Arts, which features dramatic photographs of some of the greatest living players.
Divorced Best, 58, had been expected to officially open the exhibition which includes 125 players hailed as "heroes of the beautiful game" as well as posing with the World Cup - one of the few prizes he failed to claim in a glittering career.
But his no-show embarrassed dignitaries at this afternoon's event, which was attended by FIFA executive member, Seners Erziq.
The exhibition features players chosen by Brazilian legend, Pele.
But the South American forward, perhaps the greatest footballer of all time, caused howls of protest when he overlooked several notable talents from across the globe.

Very Best of soccer's past
Blaise Tapp MEMORIES: Fan Derek Ditchfield with Nat Lofthouse's last cap A EUROPEAN Cup winners' medal, soccer programmes from 60 years ago and George Best's Aston Villa shirt were among items on show at Old Trafford during a special valuation day.
An estimated 200 fans visited the museum at Manchester United's stadium to have their football memorabilia examined by experts.
Among them was a European Cup winners' medal won by the Reds' defender Bill Foulkes in 1968, which was sold at auction for £11,000 in 1992.
The most unusual item was a signed Aston Villa shirt worn by George Best during a benefit game for the victims of the Bradford City fire in 1985.
Mark Wylie, curator at the museum, said: "The guy who brought the shirt in was delighted after we verified it because nobody believed him.
"We also had charity shield medals from 1908 and 1948."

Your Take: Who should have made our Top Eight?
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday May 17, 1999 11:06 AM George Best won the English Footballer of the Year award in 1967 and 1968. Allsport MSI/Allsport CNN/SI asked users who should have made the Top Eight list for the Century's Best Soccer players. Many of you expressed your support of George Best, who played for Manchester United from 1963 to 1972. Best was known for his exceptional ball handling skills and ability to improvise offensive opportunities. Here's a sampling of your responses... I believe Bobby Charlton was easily one of the world's best. His skill showed in the 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany when England won 4-2. And what about Geoff Hurst, what a game he had. And Gordon Banks what a great goalie. England's 1966 squad had a team of great players and it showed on the field when they won the Cup. Roger Mallett, Seminole, FL What about... Gordon Banks
Gabriel Batistuta
Marco Van Basten
George Best
Eric Cantona
Bobby Charlton
Teofilo Cubillas
Kenny Dalglish
Eusebio
Robbie Fowler
Garrincha Ruud Gullit Jairzinho Jurgen Klinsmann Robert Moore Johan Nieskens Ferenc Puskas Rivelino Romario Ronaldo Ian Rush Socrates Carlos Valderama Lev Yashin Zagallo Zinedine Zidane Got to have Roberto Baggio on that list. He's done everything except win the World Cup, and in the USA in 1994 he almost single-handedly carried Italy to that goal as well only a sore leg in the end cost him. And yet he came through time and again to get his team there. Another great one which would be right up there with the best is George Best.
