Dennis Bergkamp (born May 10, 1969 in Amsterdam) is a former Dutch international football player. Early life His parents, who were football fanatics, named him after Manchester United and Scotland striker Denis Law, though altered the spelling of the name due to Dutch regulations. Career Ajax Amsterdam Bergkamp was brought up through Ajax Amsterdam's famous youth system, joining the club at age 12. He was given his professional debut by coach Johann Cruyff on December 14, 1986 against Roda JC, and went on to make 14 appearances that season. He played as a substitute in the 1987 European Cup Winners Cup final against Lokomotive Leipzig, which Ajax won.

Bergkamp buries Blues
Arsenal 1
by Mark Bradley
EVEN the publicly pessimistic Arsene Wenger will surely now be forced to concede that his Arsenal side are genuine title challengers.
While all the pre-match attention had focused on the multitude of Frenchmen on display, the match-winner proved to be a Dutchman, with Dennis Bergkamp scoring his eighth goal of the season on 31 minutes.
It brought to an end Chelsea's incredible 21-match unbeaten run in the Premiership since defeat at Coventry on the opening day of the season. Not only are Arsenal's injury problems easing, with David Seaman back in goal, but in the six games since he last appeared at Aston Villa on December 13, they have picked up 16 points from six games.
Wenger has studiously attempted to play down his side's title chances over recent weeks, presenting a mirror image of his supposed realism at the same stage of last season before they cruised remorselessly towards the Double.
Arsenal may have been unable to truly impose themselves on London rivals Chelsea, but their defence is as assured as ever, coping with everything that a Chelsea side who have stuttered over recent weeks could throw at them.

Cork City 2
by Charlie Stuart
CORK CITY held on to their 100% Premier Division record when goals in each half from Jason Kabia and Gerald Dobbs gave them an easy win over an outclassed Bohemians side at Dalymount Park last night.
This was the Dublin club's third successive home defeat and a disaster night for young Shaun Maher who was shown the red card for a second bookable offence in the 57th minute.
The youngster had only re-signed for the Dublin club in midweek after a ten-month spell with Fulham.
Cork might have gone ahead after just five minutes when Ollie Cahill produced a chance for Dobbs only for the latter to see his effort hit the upright. Mark Herrick shot just wide on the rebound.
Derek Swan did pose the Cork defence a few problems early on when first he had a header straight into the arms of keeper Noel Mooney and then was just wide with a 15 yard volley.
But Cork were full value for their lead after 22 minutes, a move started and finished by the enterprising Kabia. It was the Cork striker who allowed Patsy Freyne to send Ollie Cahill sprinting clear on the left, past Brian Mooney and Donal Broughan before sending in a precision cross for Kabia to head home from close range.

When Arsenal acquired him from Inter Milan in the summer of 1995, they became instant contenders for the league crown. The accomplished Dutch striker is famed for his scoring touch from the most impossible of angles and has netted some of the most stunning goals for his native Holland squad. Bergkamp led Arsenal to a fantastic championship season in 1997/98 and then went on to help manage Holland to a final four appearance in France during the World Cup. The physical toll of the grueling season resulted in numerous ailments for the striker and Bergkamp was forced to sit out much of the next year.

Bergkamp hopes for FA Cup final lift after poor season
Click here for more on this story Posted: Wednesday May 09, 2001 1:24 PM LONDON (Reuters) Dennis Bergkamp hopes he can put a shine on a disappointing season by playing in Saturday's FA Cup final, the showpiece event that captivated him as a boy in the Netherlands. Bergkamp has not played for the Arsenal first team since March 18 an achilles injury has forced him to miss nine games. But the striker turned out for the reserves on Tuesday, scoring in a 4-0 win over Tottenham, and hopes manager Arsene Wenger saw enough to include the Dutchman in his cup final plans. Selection for the Cardiff showdown with Liverpool would eradicate the memory of 1998 when, after playing probably the best season of his career for double winners Arsenal, he missed the FA Cup final win over Newcastle United because of injury. "When it comes to football I have a certain amount of belief in fate and I'm hoping it's my fate to play in the final," Bergkamp said on his Web site.

    World Cup Record: 1994, 1998 (4th)
Bergkamp scored the decisive goal in the Netherlands' quarterfinal win over Argentina in 1998. Ben Radford/Allsport The Netherlands may have failed to qualify for the 2002 finals, but Bergkamp's unwillingness to step onto a plane, ever since a bomb scare aboard a Dutch squad flight during USA 1994, meant the Arsenal striker was never likely to have put in an appearance in the Far East. Bergkamp single-handedly sculpted one of the great moments in World Cup history to help the Dutch reach the semifinals at France '98. Tied at 1-1 against Argentina and with injury time looming, Bergkamp ran onto a 60-yard pass from Frank de Boer, brought the ball under control, wrong footed the Argentine defense and slotted it home without breaking stride. It was a World Cup wonder goal, but in the semifinals the Dutch lost out to Brazil on penalties, although Bergkamp's three goals for the tournament were enough to make him the Netherlands' leading all-time goalscorer. Four years earlier the Brazilians had ended another promising Dutch World Cup campaign at the quarterfinals stage. In that competition, Bergkamp chipped in with important goals against Morocco to help the Dutch win their first-round group and in their second round win over Ireland. His goal also sparked a brave Dutch fightback to 2-2 in the quarterfinal before Branco's freekick won it for the Brazilians.

Wide Open It really is going to go down to the wire A few things from this weekend; of equal significance are Arsenal's grit, determination and brilliance against Newcastle at St James' and Derby's magnificent home draw (not a victory through pure bad luck) against Manchester United. Arsenal were simply stunning against the magpies, with outstanding performances from Sol Campbell, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires and Dennis Bergkamp but a special word is due for Lee Dixon. Running around like a 20 year old (he's 38) he was superb and handled Laurent Robert (of whom I'm a big fan) with aplomb. Malcolm Christie If Liverpool finish this season poorly then a candidate for blame is their underuse of Jari Litmanen Liverpool should also look at their transfer policy for some schoolboy errors; what do Vladamir Smicer Patrik Berger Jerzy Dudek Stephane Henchoz Milan Baros and Igor Biscan It's team of the week time, but I must mention the great difficulty in choosing a goal of the week. We were treated to some absolute beauties from Chris Marsden, Jason Euell, Matt Jansen and Malcolm Christie to name a few. One stood out for guile, speed of thought, audaciousness, difficulty and sheer brilliance.

After a hectic week I've finally replaced my computer, if anyone's visited in the last 5 days I hope the passing tumbleweed didn't get in your way. Summing up last weekend's results all seems a bit pointless (a bit like United) so suffice to say the whiskey's in the post to Steve McLaren Good on Dennis Bergkamp for showing that despite his doubters and a couple of lukewarm seasons there's no substitute for class. Another almost flawless performance from the Dutch master and a stunning display from Arsenal was only soured by the cruciate ligament injury to Robert Pires. The (surely) soon to be player of season will miss the rest of the domestic season and also the World Cup (barring a dodgy French team doctor telling him he's alright.) The Dutch star left just 26 minutes into the north London derby following a hard challenge from Tottenham's Dean Richards. "Dennis had to come off with inflammation of his ribcage and we don't really know where it came from," Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said on Wednesday. "But he thinks that maybe when he fell he hit himself with his elbow." Scans have revealed no serious damage, but Bergkamp has yet to confirm his availability for Saturday's trip to Southampton. "They (the ribs) are still pretty sore and I have to miss a couple of training sessions, but hopefully everything will be fine for the weekend and I'll be in contention against Southampton," the 33-year-old said. Bergkamp's departure came just minutes before Spurs midfielder Simon Davies was controversially sent off for a second yellow card.

The FC Barcelona star scored four times to become the top scorer in the tournament with six goals and was only on the field for 59 minutes. He was substituted on the hour mark after a head injury following an elbow from Sinisa Mihajlovic in an aerial challenge but by then he had wrecked Yugoslavia's defence. A quiet opening hardly hinted at the exhibition of top class finishing to come. Predrag Mijatovic was put clear in the middle of goal in the 14th after good work on the left by Savo Milosevic but Mijatovic hit his shot too close to Edwin van der Sar. Dennis Bergkamp fired a shot from the left a minute later when hee cut inside and curled a shot with his right foot which Kralj palmed away and then Kluivert took over the game with four goals in thirty six minutes either side of the interval.
