Agoos helps lead turnaround in San Jose
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday July 31, 2001 5:02 PM Jeff Agoos was the top All-Star vote-getter in MLS this year. Tom Hauck/Allsport By Scott French, Soccer America Jeff Agoos wasn't too happy when he got the news he was traded from three-time MLS champion D.C. United to feeble San Jose, but his inspired play has helped make the Quakes one of MLS's top teams. Jeff Agoos isn't about to trumpet his importance to the remarkable turnaround the San Jose Earthquakes have enjoyed in 2001, and to be truthful, he isn't the only reason that what has been MLS's feeblest aggregation is suddenly one of its strongest. Yes, his performance has been remarkable, as good as or better than any MLS defensive player's through the first two-thirds of the season. As the Earthquakes' on-field general and as its stabilizing force in the back he seems unquestionably the most vital piece to the puzzle Frank Yallop has been assembling since his hiring as coach in early February. The Quakes, their ranks a blend of young, hungry holdovers and deft pick-ups, are a title contender unfathomable in previous years battling Miami and Chicago for MLS's best record.

JEFF AGOOS: IN HIS OWN WORDS
After a challenging and successful 2001, it's time for everyone to get focused on the most important task of any national team - preparing to represent your country at the World Cup. It's certainly been rewarding to take a moment to think about everything this team has accomplished over two years of hard work, but now the players, coaches and staff have turned their attention to the mission of building a team that has a chance to be successful this summer in Korea. And the mission has begun here in Claremont.

Kickoff at the Stadio Cibali is set for 2:45 p.m. ET (8:45 p.m. local). Fans can follow the match live on ussoccer.com's Match Tracker, presented by Philips Electronics. Biography
Jeff Agoos (born May 2, 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland) is an American soccer defender, who currently plays for the MetroStars of Major League Soccer.
Jeff (nicknamed Goose), who was raised in Texas, currently holds the record for the most MLS championships of any player with five total: three with DC United (for whom he played from 1996 to 2000) and two with the San Jose Earthquakes (2001-2004).
Before joining MLS, Agoos played in several different leagues. From 1986-1989, he played for Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia, where he was named a First-Team All-American twice, and finished second in Hermann Award voting in his senior season. Upon graduating from college, Agoos played Maryland Bays of the A-League in 1991, and the indoor Dallas Sidekicks in 1992. After that he moved to Germany, where he played for SV Wehen during the 1994-5 season, before returning to the United States to join the nascent MLS.
Agoos made his debut with the United States national team on January 13, 1988 against Guatemala. Jeff was the last member to be cut from the US squad for the 1994 World Cup and he burned his uniform upon hearing the news. He made the squad for the 1998 World Cup in France but did not play a single minute, in favor of David Regis. In the World Cup in South Korea/Japan at the age of 34, Jeff started the first three games (he scored an own goal to finish the scoring in the surprising win against Portugal) until he suffered a calf injury against Poland and missed the rest of the tournament.

In 1998, Jeff Agoos was a 28-year-old left back, and was in what should have been the prime of his career. He had sweated blood to help the men's national team reach France and the World Cup. by Russ Melton San Jose, May 6, 2006 (ASN) The San Jose Earthquakes head to the East Coast for a tilt against the MetroStars this Saturday at Giants Stadium. This will be the Quakes second consecutive road game, with San Jose having scratched out a 2-2 draw against expansion club Real Salt Lake last Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Utah.
After five games so far this season, the Earthquakes are 1-1-3, good for six points and third place in the Western Conference behind FC Dallas and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Meanwhile, the MetroStars return to home soil after having thoroughly pounded the Colorado Rapids 3-1 last Saturday in Denver. After four games, the MetroStars sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with five points and a 1-1-2 record.
The game started under snow flurries and near-freezing conditions, and there was even discussion of using the alternate orange-colored game ball for the first time in MLS history . But the adverse Rocky Mountain weather did not stop the visitors from attacking early, and from the outset the Colorado defense appeared disorganized and not ready to handle the MetroStars attack.

Jose Cancela scored the Revs opener One couldn't blame the Revolution (9-1-4, 31 points) if they had come out sluggishly against the MetroStars (5-4-5, 20 points); after all, the Revolution was playing its third game in eight days and this one was in 90-degree heat. Instead, Jose Cancela put the Revolution up with a canny strike just 20 seconds into the match. On the opening kick off, New England took the ball down the right side, which then came back to Cancela in the midfield. He hit a short pass to Shalrie Joseph, who miss-hit a pass to Khano Smith. The defensive clearance was chested down by Clint Dempsey; and as Dempsey stepped forward to control the ball Cancela came flying in to loop the ball over Metros 'keeper Zach Wells with the outside of his right foot from 28 yards. Wells was caught off his line, a theme to be reprised in the final seconds of the game. The MetroStars quickly sent the message that this would not be an easy day for the home team. Amado Guevara got into a confrontation with Dempsey; then Chris Leitch took out Dempsey in the third minute with a hip-check at midfield in front of the team benches that required a caution. Dempsey responded a minute later by rocketing a 25-yard shot off the corner of the goalpost and crossbar.

Agoos Includes Futsal in Busy Soccer Schedule
Before he played in the World Indoor Championship in Hong Kong in 1992, Jeff Agoos did not know much, if anything about Futsal. It was a brand new experience for him, but he adapted to the game quickly and is now a strong advocate of the sport. If his soccer schedule permits, Agoos will appear in the next FIFA World Championship, which will take place in Spain from Nov. 24 through December 11. The specific sites will be chosen in September. Futsal is the World Indoor Game. It is played without the use of dasherboards, and that caught Agoos by surprise when he first tried the game. "The first time I played Futsal was with the 1992 team, and it was interesting," he said "There's a lot of skill involved and a lot of tactics. We actually came into that whole thing as one of the favorites. The Futsal game is something that I had never had a chance to experience. It was totally different from anything I'd ever done. It was a combination of indoor and outdoor. In a very small environment. It was very difficult at first, but once we figured out the nuances we did pretty well. "It's a different game. It's not outdoor soccer. It's not indoor soccer the way we've played it in the U.S. I enjoyed it because it had more to do with outdoor soccer than indoor soccer with the boards did. I definitely enjoyed it."

Agoos thrilled to don U.S. jersey
By John Pye
Associated Press
CANBERRA, Australia Jeff Agoos says he'd have to be struck by lightning before even contemplating missing the U.S. soccer team's Olympic opener Wednesday against the Czech Republic. Jeff Agoos, left, is thrilled to be representing the United States in the Olympics. Agoos has represented the United States at just about every level, but he has never run onto the field at a World Cup, so the Olympics is his biggest shot on the international stage. A good performance in Sydney could bring him more consideration for the U.S. team, which is currently attempting to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The 32-year-old defender, one of three senior players allowed on the under-23 roster for the Olympic tournament, is preparing to unleash all the aggression and frustration he has been bottling up for years. Not that he hides his disappointments. Devastated at being the last player cut from the World Cup squad in 1994, Agoos torched his uniform. "You put in a year and a half of physical and mental hardship, you get that close, you're pretty close to being insane. Anything can happen," he said.

U.S. National Team GOLD CUP REPORT CARD: WORLD CUP ROSTER PROSPECTS by Jeff Dieffenbach Bruce Arena was all smiles after a youthful U.S. national side downed Costa Rica to win the Gold Cup on Saturday. The coach is now faced with the on-going task of player evaluations to determine which 23 players will join him in Korea/Japan, but it is a luxury that Arena and US are facing for the first time. "I hope it gets real tough (the selection process). It will be a nice problem to have if we have several players competing for 23 roster spots, and I think that will be the case,” Arena said after the match. Arena has said since the start of the selection process that it was one that would not be finalized until the May 21 when final rosters must be submitted to FIFA. And while the U.S. gaffer is keeping his cards close to the chest, 365’s Jeff Dieffenbach has his own evaluation on who will be on the flight. The roster will definitely have three goalkeepers and Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller are certainly both inked in on the final roster. The biggest question not answered by the Gold Cup run was which U.S. based keeper will join the England based duo with Zach Thornton and Tony Meola the best guesses.
