With Rudy Galindo she won the junior pairs title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in . In , Yamaguchi won the singles and, with Galindo, the pairs titles at the World Junior Championships. Yamaguchi and Galindo won the U.S. senior pairs title in and . As a pairs team, Yamaguchi and Galindo were unusual in that they were both accomplished singles skaters, and in that they jumped and spun in opposite directions Yamaguchi counter-clockwise, and Galindo clockwise. From on, Yamaguchi concentrated on singles competition. At the 1992 Winter Olympics she won the ladies singles gold medal. Kristi Yamaguchi Stars on Ice 1998, Playmates Individual Figure Kristi Yamaguchi is one of the most famous and most popular Asian Pacific American athletes in the U.S. She qualified in two events at the World Championships in 1989. That year, she was awarded Athlete of the Year for Figure Skating by the U.S. Olympic Committee. In 1992, Yamaguchi won several awards. Starting off the year with the National and World Championships, followed by the gold medal in women's singles championships at the Winter Olympics, and finally a second World Chapionship. In 1996, she was awarded Skater of the Year by American Skating World. She consecutively won the Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards for Favorite Female Athlete from 1996-1998. Then, in 1998, she was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame and in 1999, into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. In addition to his Olympic gold medal, Brian Boitano has won four United States national championships and two world titles. Ironically, it was his loss to Orser in the 1987 world championships that marked the turning point in Boitano's career. Following that defeat, he hired the skating choreographer Sandra Bezic, who revamped his style, adding to his natural athletic gifts more artistry and emotion. She was born with a clubfoot, but when Kristi saw Dorthy Hamill skate she knew what she wanted to do. Kristi was 10 years old when she started working with her coach Christy Kjarsgaard Ness. When Kristi was older, she became an ice skater for the United States Olympic team. Between the years of 1986 and 1989 Kristi skated in pairs with her skating partner Rudi Galindo but in 1990 she concentrated on singles. She is a poised and compassionate role model. Yamaguchi's talent grew out of a seeming disability. Born with clubbed feet and forced to wear casts during her early childhood, Yamaguchi was encouraged to begin an exercise regimen to strengthen her legs. Her mother enrolled her in dance classes. But after watching Dorothy Hamill skate in the 1976 Winter Olympics, the four-year-old Yamaguchi decided she wanted to be just like Hamill and dedicated herself to skating. "I learned to do homework in the car, get changed in the car, eat breakfast and lunch in the car," she recalls. The highlight of Yamaguchi's career came during the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. Heeding the advice of teammate Scott Hamilton, Yamaguchi adopted a relaxed, happy attitude toward the Games. As a result, her skating throughout the events was airy, joyous and triumphant, and she won the gold. Yamaguchi also won the heart of hockey player Bret Hedican, whom she married in Hawaii on July 8, 2000. The graceful figure skater tours with Stars on Ice and runs the Always Dream Foundation, an organization that helps underprivileged children. She plans to retire from skating in 2003.

Yamaguchi said the relationship with Be Active is a natural. Hedican agreed, adding that he and Yamaguchi are especially concerned about well-publicized increases in childhood obesity. Shellie Pfohl, director of Be Active North Carolina, said the group is fortunate to have Yamaguchi and Hedican. addition, Be Active North Carolina also operates an increasingly popular workplace program designed to help companies provide health and physical activity benefits for their employees. Yamaguchi endeared herself to Americans when she won an Olympic Gold Medal in Albertville in 1992. She also was crowned World Champion in 1991 and 1992. In 2002, she was named the most influential person in figure skating by International Figure Skating magazine. In 1998, she was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Today, she continues to awe crowds by skating professionally. Yamaguchi also operates the Always Dream Foundation , which supports organizations that have a positive influence on children.
