Gay Blades
A "summer beach novel" by Ben Tyler
"Fans of Tyler's shamelessly seductive blend of fast-paced action, ruthless characters and hard sex will gobble up this high-caloric bonbon."
Publishers Weekly
What's this? A hardcover novel showing a guy in teal spandex, with a rainbow flag adorning his skating boot? Obviously, Rainbow Ice had to check this out. Turns out author Ben Tyler characterizes Gay Blades as "summer beach reading," a classic tale of the rise and fall of a bad-seed ingenu tour skater ("Tag") who's hiding all sorts of secrets behind his baby face. Along the way, lots of men have lots of sex, especially Tag (who, in one memorable scene, gives new meaning to the phrase "getting hammered"). The book is set in the world of low-rent touring ice shows, but it's not a tell-all. It has nothing to do with eligible competition, either, as Tyler lets us know right off the bat when his protagonist ("Garry") gets thrown out of the American Skating Society (A.S.S.) for being openly gay. Instead, we get a sometimes campy, sometimes hilarious gay male skewering of the tackiness that abounds when talented skaters miss eligible greatness but still want to earn money skating: pruney skating officials, amoral tour operators, catty competition on the show circuit, accommodations slightly less grand than what the Stars on Ice or Tom Collins skaters enjoy (in describing Tag's tryst with a stranger in a Howard Johnson, Tyler notes, "They fell back on the teal-colored bedspread that matched the drapes, that matched the rug, that matched the upholstery on the sitting chair").

Cherry Blosson Skate Fete Set
By Nicholas F. Benton Few people not directly involved in the sport would recognize the Washington, D.C., area as a hot bed for figure skating competition, but there are some 15 active clubs in the area who participate in a Capital Regional Council that is hosting its annual Cherry Blossom Invitational Figure Skating Competition this weekend in Alexandria. The non-qualifying competition is sanctioned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association and will highlight the region's best talent, without a doubt including some stars of tomorrow. Existing stars will be involved, as well. Derrick Delmore, who is a highly accomplished competitive skater and a member of the U.S. International Team for 11 consecutive years who finished fifth last month at the Marshall's Figure Skating Challenge in Tampa, will not compete, but will be deeply involved in the Cherry Blossom competition this weekend as a coach at the host venue, the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center. In addition to Delmore, Northern Virginia also boasts former national champion Michael Weiss of McLean and Tim Goebel, who is currently listed as training in Fairfax, among the world's best skaters.

My Sporting View
Johnny Weir's Victory One of Decade's Great Sports Stories By Nicholas F. Benton
It could be argued that, from a psychological standpoint at least, figure skating may be the cruelest of all sports. Only gymnastics possibly compares. In other sports, there are margins for considerable failure even for the most successful athletes. Baseball players make the Hall of Fame failing two-thirds of the times they bat. Quarterbacks throw interceptions and fumble and still win Super Bowls. Michael Jordon committed fouls, threw the ball away and missed more three point shots than he made most the games he played. Pete Sampras double faulted en route to Grand Slam titles, and Tiger Wood hit ball into the rough and still won the huge tournaments. But entire careers in figure skating rise and fall on the ability to "stick" just a couple of key jumping opportunities in any given competition. Miss one of them and you're almost certainly done for. There is simply no margin for error. It used to be, even in the heyday of Scott Hamilton two decades ago, that it was extremely rare to see a fall at a national figure skating championship. That was because, of course, all the competitors were so skilled.

An Interview with Champion Figure Skater Michael Weiss
CLICK HERE TO SEE PART TWO Michael Weiss, a two-time National Champion, World Bronze Medalist and Olympian chatted with Dr. Caroline Silby about his perspectives on motivation in a two-part interview.
On the Early Years
Skating was something that differentiated me from everybody else and got me attention from my parents and friends and coaches. I was just motivated by the fact that I was getting praise and getting recognition. I felt like I had to skate with the best skaters in the world everyday in order to be motivated to get better. And then I went through this stage in my late teens where I realized that the motivation comes from inside you and you have to be able to do it yourself.
On Being the Champion
It's very easy to push yourself when you're trying to chase number one. I read a great quote about three weeks before the Nationals, "In order to be number one you have to train like number two." That's so right. I have to train like I'm trying to knock off whoever that other person is, not like I'm trying to defend. Michelle Kwan has said "You're not going to World Championships to defend your title you're going there to be World Champion and try and win." And that's the only way you can look at if you are going to be successful.
