Television Schedule Mike to do USATODAY.com online chat Tuesday, Dec. 9, 11:30 a.m. - noon Michael talked about his career and the sport of figure skating during an online chat at USATODAY.com on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Here are the questions and answers: Comment from Michael Weiss: Hi everybody and welcome. Thanks for your questions and thanks for your support. Hopefully I can answer some of your questions accurately. Let's get started.
Radford, VA: Hello Michael Good luck this weekend at the Grand Prix Final. What do the American men need to do to beat Evegeny Plushenko?
Michael Weiss: Plushenko is obviously an incredible competitor and great technician. He is extremely consistent. But figure skating has always been a sport of the moment, and on any moment or any competition, anything can happen. So I think for the Americans to be competitive, we need to put together a competition that is skated technically clean with quadruple jumps and also skated with high emotion and passion.

Michael Weiss
Online Interview
May 16, 2004
In the 2003-04 competitive season, Weiss continued his winning ways taking the coveted Skate America title and finishing a strong second in the U.S. Championships. Currently ranked third in the world by the International Skating Union, the 3-time United States National men's figure skating champion and 2-time Olympian, Michael Weiss, has combined his passion for skating with an innate athleticism to develop a strong, forceful and unique style that has made him a fan favorite around the world. While his jumps are explosive and spins dizzying, his footwork is intricate. His choreography blends these different elements into routines that emphasize his elegant artistry while demonstrating his impressive power. This power was undeniably displayed when he became the first U.S. skater to land a quadruple toe loop in competition at the 1999 World Figure Skating Championships. He is also the inventor of a remarkable move that brings audiences to their feet, a back flip with a full twist appropriately called the Tornado . The Tornado is currently being considered for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Weiss Plans Busy Season
November 17, 2004
Barry Mittan
Veteran U. S. skater Michael Weiss has a busy scheduled planned for 2004-2005, but it's a bit different from the routine he's followed for the last several years. "I will be doing three of Steve Disson's events on NBC this winter, two tributes to Andrea Boccelli and Kenny Loggins, and a holiday special. Having the opportunity to skate to the live music of such legendary performers will be a great experience. I'll also be doing sixteen Stars on Ice shows in February and March. That's a change for me, while still competing." Weiss has traditionally appeared on the Champions on Ice tour, but not last summer. "I needed a break, if I am going to have a run at 2006," he explained. "It was a short tour, so I was glad to spend the time vacationing and recovering from the last two seasons of work. I enjoyed some fantastic family time this spring and summer. Next year will be a busy one, so it was a needed rest." Weiss will also skate at several fundraisers for The Michael Weiss Foundation. The organization was created to address the issue of the high cost of figure skating and increased need for financial support for Olympic hopefuls. "I know when I was an up and coming athlete, being recognized for my accomplishments and encouraged through financial support inspired me as a young skater to work harder and increased my determination to succeed," Weiss said. "It has been a dream of mine to inspire and support young skaters, and this is a way that I can help the future of figure skating."

Ever since landing the first quadruple jump ever seen in competition during the 1997 season, Weiss has emerged as one of the country's top skaters. He has won three national titles, and placed second at the State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships this year. Weiss hopes to glide through the competition at the World Championships in Germany starting March 25. In his free time, Weiss works with various charities, including the Special Olympics, where he works with special-needs individuals to learn skating and other aspects of recreation. Weiss: I grew up in a gymnasium with my parents as Olympic gymnasts and coaches. When I was 9 years old, I went to the ice rink with my older sisterand I've been skating ever since. I progressed quicker than most skaters my age, and that encouraged me to continue to improve. After just two years of skating, I made it to the National Championships.
