Ice skating, which is performed on both recreational and professional levels, is a sport in which participants wearing steel-bladed skates slide around on an indoor or outdoor ice rink. The sport of ice skating using wood and bones for blades originated in Scotland and the Netherlands and was brought to North America by Scottish immigrants in the1700s. The invention of the steel-bladed skate to replace those made of iron gave way to various international competitions. Today, men and women's figure skating and speed skating are also popular events in the Winter Olympics. This section features various resources on ice skating. The Real John Curry.
Early dreams. Born in 1949, John Curry was a dance enthusiast from an early age: he had wanted to take ballet classes when he was five years old, but his father refused. Instead, John took up skating, at which he excelled. Numerous competition wins followed, satisfying his father that skating qualified as a competitive sport. When he was 16 his father died and John moved to London. He began training full-time and also started taking the previously forbidden ballet classes. Already, he was formulating his life's mission: to form an ice dance company, bring ballet-standard dance to the skating world and reveal the possibilities of the rink to the ballet world. John wanted to make a name for himself in international figure skating, but two obstacles stood in his way: one technical and one stylistic. Technically, John's performance suffered as he competed at higher levels: after a flawless practice, nervousness would lead to slips in front of the judges. And stylistically, John was at odds with the British figure skating community. His vision of ice dance and his years as a ballet enthusiast had helped him to develop his own fluid, expressive style. This was seen as acceptable in a child skater, but less appropriate for a young man: 'I was actually told not to be so graceful,' he later recalled.

Washington Post Staff Writer

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean skated a seamless program at the '84 Games in Sarajevo and were rewarded with a total of 12 perfect scores.
(Joel Richardson/The Post) They skated to the music of Bolero, that haunting, erotic theme, and told a tale of two lovers who cannot be together, so together throw themselves into a lava pit. When their performance was over and they lay sprawled on the ice, the rink had been transformed into a volcano. Applause erupted, then hushed as everyone waited for the scores. The judges agreed that they are the perfect couple. They received a total of 12 perfect, 6.0 scores, including all nine for artistic impression, the most they ever have received for one performance in their career. Princess Anne watched as they were crowned. The performance that earned them the gold medal for ice dancing will be remembered by those who care about skating the way people remember Oleg and Ludmila Protopopov's ballet on ice. People will brag years from now that they were there when Torvill and Dean lit a fire in Sarajevo.

By Stephen Kasiewicz Now Livingston siblings John (24) and Sinead (25) Kerr are aiming to bring the sport back into the spotlight. The West Lothian pair, who train eight hours a day, six days a week at the Murrayfield Ice Rink in Edinburgh and in Manchester, will be aiming for high placings at both the European Championships in Turin, Italy, in January and then at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia, in March. G8 and Five Bellies no Torvill and Dean
Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been forced to pull out of a celebrity ice-skating show after injuring himself while practising with his best friend Jimmy "Five Bellies" Gardner. The player nicknamed Gazza, who announced in October he wanted to be known as G8, was set to appear in the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in a festive ice-skating version of the hit show. Gascoigne, 37, said he had injured his back pretending to emulate former British Olympic gold medal-winning ice dance pair Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. "I've been training with Jimmy Five Bellies as well as my professional partner and we kept arguing over who would be Torvill and who would be Dean," he told the BBC. "In trying to lift him, a terrible accident occurred and I fell crushed to the ice - unlike Jayne Torvill, he's 16 stone." Gascoigne, who left English fourth division side Boston United in October to pursue a career in management, will be replaced on the show by former England goalkeeper David Seaman. Reuters Print Email

Last Updated: Figure Skating is the perfect union of dance and athletics. I have been enchanted watching performances for years and the artistry and pure raw strength and talent that figure skaters show is a constant delight to view. I have been not thrilled, however, with the stupid politics that constantly rears its ugly head in the judge's voting. The last couple of Olympics have really soured me, as it is worse than even during the Cold War years. But , this is a celebration of the athletes who enthrall us with triple jumps and extended spins and impossible lifts and throws, all artistically done to music. I have frequently dreamed that I am the skater who is performing and, being a dream, I can not only skate perfectly, but actually take off and soar up in the air floating over the heads of the audience. When I hear certain music, I frequently picture a skater performing to it. Yes, I have to admit, figure skating is truly a major part of my fantasy life. I would especially like to thank the following performers for the talent and artistry they have shown over the years: The Dushesnay's Robin Cousins Kurt Browning "Passion"

FEW PEOPLE would contend that British figure skating has been in the doldrums in recent years, but Scottish siblings Sinead and John Kerr hope to match the glory years of Robin Cousins and Torvill and Dean. Sinead told Jack McKeown about their hopes for this month’s world championships, and beyond. “We’re doing quite a lot of off ice stuff and refining our routine,” Sinead, 25, says cheerfully. She has every reason to be happy; she and her partner John, 24, have won the British Championships the last two years running, are placed in the top 10 in the 2005 European Championships, and look poised for greatness. Sinead was born in Dundee in 1979 and her brother entered the world one year later in Broxburn. The pair now live with their parents in Livingston and divide their training time between Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Ice Rink and Deeside in North Wales. “As a professional athlete— especially when you’re starting out—you don’t earn very much, so staying at home allows us to spend most of our money on training.

SPORT Cool as ice ICE SKATING
Francesca Steele gets her skates on for the coolest sport in town When Torvill and Dean won the gold medal in ice dancing at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, millions tuned in to watch their extraordinary performance. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were two of the most famous figure skaters ever, with a knack of making triple axis turns mid-air look so easy and graceful that they might have been born with skates and not feet on the end of their legs. But ice skating, as Oman Today found out, is not quite that simple. It takes strength, balance and above all, perseverance. So how might a novice set about learning the basics? When you first venture out onto the ice you might surprise yourself by being able to stand up. Even walk and semi-skate around a little. So far so good, you think smugly. And then you let go of the side, wave your hands wildly in the air as you struggle to regain your balance and grapple desperately for the side again. Humph. Not so graceful after all.
