And, somehow the MadSci administrators know I was Canadian, so of course I know who Elvis is! The answer to your question is - probably. The first problem with skating on the Moon is the Moon's lack of an atmosphere. This would mean that any ice on the surface would be be very cold. The cold and the lack of atmospheric pressure would make it impossible to skate `outside' on the surface of the Moon. Here's why: When you skate, almost all of your weight is carried on the very small area of your skate blades. The force of your weight on the small area creates tremendous pressure. In regions of high pressure, water melts at lower temperatures, so the temperature of the ice beneath your is above the high-pressure freezing point and the ice turns to water. This makes a film of water between your blade and the ice, which allows you to slide along. If you were on the surface of the moon, the temperature of the ice would be much lower than it is on a skating rink. The pressure exerted on the ice under your blades (which would be lower because of your lower weight) would not be high enough to make the melting temperature under the blades equal to the ice's temperature. The ice wouldn't melt and you wouldn't slide along. You can see this effect for yourself if you try skating outside on a really cold day.

Who else would be skating at the same time? none other than Elvis Stojko , the world champion from Canada best known for his quadruple jumps. So while I'm puttering around, trying to skate backwards on one foot, Elvis is weaving around the rink at a high speed performing triple triple combinations, landing right in front of me and others. He did spins so fast all you could see was a blur. Most people couldn't seem to make up their minds whether to feel inspired or intimidated. He's just so good. What a treat! Brian Orser hosted a seminar in Sudbury at her request and Doug Leigh is back for 2005 as well. Figure Skating in Northern Ontario Hats Off To Wendy! The level of training available to young skaters in the Sudbury area is impressive to put it moderately. Over a few months surrounding the turn of 2003-2004 the skaters at the Sudbury Skating Club have had help and guidance from the likes of Doug Leigh, Michelle Leigh, Lee Barkell, Robert Tebby, and Jeffery Buttle (see their highlights below). Doug Leigh, considered by many to be not only Canada's best coach, but one of the world's best, has a coaching schedule that reads like an international travel brochure; Berlin, Japan, China, Montreal, Stockholm, Colorado, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and oh yeah, Sudbury, Ontario. This month! Here's a man that finds himself heading for his 24th World Championships and when I asked him why he was in Sudbury today coaching a few of our rising stars says "I just love being part of other people's dreams - to grab people and pull out what's inside of them.
