Skaters
There are two classes of figure skaters; Olympic eligible (the old "amateur" status) and not Olympic eligible (professionals). Olympic eligible skaters are restricted to skating in events that are sanctioned by their federation and/or the International Skating Union. Professional skaters can skate in anything *but* sanctioned events (with the exception of the occasional sanctioned pro-ams, such as the Hersheys Kisses or Ultimate 4 competitions). Shortly before the 1994 Olympics the ISU temporarily opened up reinstatement for professional skaters (which is why you saw Boitano, Browning, and others skating in Lillihammer), then closed it again in 1995. The only skater who opted for reinstatement and remained Olympic eligible after the 1994 Olympics was Artur Dmitriev. He and partner Natalia Mishkutenok won the pairs competition at the 1992 Olympics and placed second at the 1994 Olympics. Mr. Dmitriev then returned with a new partner, Oksana Kasakova, to win the pairs title again at the 1998 Olympics.
The Olympics
The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Figure skating was not listed on Olympic programs until the first Winter Olympic games in 1924.

Michelle Kwan landed a triple jump on her butt and Irina Slutskaya decided to play it safe. That opened the door for 16 year-old Sarah Hughes to win the gold in women's figure skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. All the talk before the final skate was about the great rivalry between American Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya of Russia. Sarah was in fourth place before the final skate so no one really expected her to win - including Sarah. "I think a lot of people counted me out and didn't think I could do it. I didn't even think it would be possible, so just to be sitting here with this medal around my neck, I didn't think it could happen," said Sarah, after winning the gold. Sarah's final skate was nearly perfect and featured seven triple jumps - more than any other skater. When Michelle Kwan forgot that triple jumps landed on skates score more points than jumps landed on your butt, the gold medal race was wide open. With some help from the bizarre figure skating scoring system, which makes understanding trigonometry or memorizing the capitals of eastern European seem easy, Sarah was awarded the gold medal based on the strength of her long program. The figure skating world has been taking notice of Sarah since 1998 when she won the US Junior Figure Skating Championships at the age of 12. She qualified for the World Championships the next year where she finished seventh. She made it to the podium for the first time at

2002 World Figure Skating Championships: Day 5 The 2002 World Figure Skating Championships continued today with the Ladies Short Program and the Free Dance. Ladies, Short Program The Ladies continued their competition with the Short Program. Irina Slutskaya of Russia took the lead following the second phase of the competition. To the delight of the home crowd, Fumie Suguri (JPN) moved into second place while Michelle Kwan of the USA finished third in the Short Program. Skating last, Slutskaya opened her program to Franz Schubert's Serenade "Leise flehen meine Lieder" with a triple Lutz-double loop combination immediately followed by a double Axel. The Olympic silver medallist also produced a triple flip out of footwork and excellent spins to take all first place ordinals. Two Judges awarded her a 6.0 for presentation - Slutskaya's first 6.0 in a World Championship. "I'm really happy about the 6.0s", Slutskaya said at the post-event press conference. "I was waiting long for this moment. I'm working hard for my artistic mark, and I'm happy that the judges can see it." Suguri was a surprising second. The Japanese Champion delivered a flowing program to "Ave Maria" that contained a triple Lutz-double toeloop combination, a triple flip and nice spirals. Her marks ranged from 5.3 to 5.7 for required elements and from 5.5 to 5.8 for presentation. "I was a little bit nervous, but I tried to focus on my performance as much as possible", Suguri commented. "I had a lot of pressure at our Nationals, so I was used to it and didn't feel it too much today. Lori (Nichol, her choreographer) told me to show my heart when I'm skating. I did 80 percent today, but I think it will go down to 70 when I watch the video tape! I had a little mistake on the deathdrop, it could have been higher."

2002 European Figure Skating Championships: Day Five The 2002 ISU European Figure Skating Championships continued in Lausanne with the Ladies Short Program and the conclusion of the Ice Dance competition. Ladies, Short Program The Ladies started today's competition with the Short Program. Three Russians dominated the competition and are standing in first, second and third after the Short Program. Maria Butyrskaya took the lead ahead of Viktoria Volchkova and Irina Slutskaya. Butyrskaya, who was tied in first place with Slutskaya after the Qualifying Round, delivered a clean and lyrical performance. The program set to "Tune of the White Nights" featured a triple flip out of footwork, a triple Lutz-double toeloop a double Axel and nice spins. Her marks went up to 5.8 for required elements and up to 5.9 for presentation. "There is no "most difficult" element in the short for me, they are all equally important", the 1999 World Champion said. "If you miss one, it costs you dearly. I was nervous, as always. I'm even nervous before skating in an exhibition! I'm happy with this program, it was well done." Volchkova turned in a clean performance as well, although she had a tooth-ache. She hit a high triple Lutz-double toeloop, a triple flip and showed nice spirals in her routine to "Moonlight Sonata". The judges awarded her marks ranging from 5.5 to 5.8 for required elements and from 5.8 to 5.9 for presentation. "I skated very well today and hope to do the same tomorrow", the Muscovite told the press. "I don't think about a place or a medal; I concentrate on my skating. I had some problems with my tooth, but did not even think of that."

Michelle Kwan faced the odd year jinx and Irina Slutskaya in the ladies free skate and met the challenge. She skated a clean strong program to win the long program on a seven-two split of the panel. This was one of those performances where she was "in the zone" and everything came together on the ice. Slutskaya, who skated after Kwan, started off hesitantly in the first third of her program but then went on to skate a strong program. She landed a triple Salchow - triple loop - double toe loop combination, the first lady to land a jump combination of that class in ISU competition. In winning here Kwan became the first lady to repeat as World Champion since Kristi Yamaguchi in 1991 and 1992, and she is the first lady since Katarina Witt to win four World Championships. After she saw her marks Slutskaya looked keenly disappointed, and her coach said she though that Irina should have won. During the awards ceremony she looked uncomfortable and bored, but later, in the post-event press conference, she was in good spirits and showed little sign of displeasure or disappointment. Sarah Hughes skated a nearly clean program - with but a small cheat on the second jump of a triple Salchow - triple loop combination. She placed fourth in the long program but it was good enough to win the bronze medal. Maria Butyrskaya turned in a strong performance to place third in the free skating but ended up in fourth place overall. Had Butyrskaya finished one place higher in the qualifying round or had she beaten Hughes in the short program she would have won the bronze medal. In the short program Hughes placed ahead of Butyrskaya on a five-four split of the panel. Thus, the difference between being on the podium and packing your skate bag for these two competitors ended up being the placement of one judge in the short program.

Slutskaya gets nod over Kwan in short program
Reuters
NAGANO, Japan Irina Slutskaya moved into a commanding lead in the women's event at the World Figure Skating Championships on Friday after Michelle Kwan made a mistake in the short program. Slutskaya was flawless in her routine, earning two perfect 6.0s for presentation to a Schubert melody. With a high triple lutz entering her combination, she also was the best of the afternoon for required elements, with all 5.8s or 5.9s. "It's the first time I received 6.0 in the short program at the worlds," Slutskaya said. "I worked hard on my artistic marks and I'm very happy the judges see that, too." Kwan dropped behind Fumie Suguri of Japan, who also skated without mistakes. Kwan stumbled out of her triple lutz, in the first part of a combination. For that, she received technical marks between 5.2 and 5.4, very low for the four-time world champion. "I didn't feel really good out there," Kwan said. "Heading into the triple lutz, the combination, I felt a little too fast and I think I leaned back a little bit."
