In the process he landed the first quad-triple combination in a short program. In addition to quad toe loop - triple toe loop he landed triple Axel and a triple flutz. His three spins were well done but the strength of the program was the jumps. He seemed better able to handle the altitude her than he did last year, but he was still a little sluggish on his two footwork sequences. Afterwards he said., "I am just a person who cannot skate in the mountains. I had all the different stuff in the beginning of the short. When I made them, I thought I ust want to finish the program." Second in the short program was Timothy Goebel who land quad Salchow, triple Axel - triple toe loop and double Axel. Although he has landed quad-triple combinations in the free skate, he chose not to attempt that in the short program. He said, "With the changes in coaching and skating, I wanted to keep the elements the same as a comfort factor ... I wanted something to stay the same." The three combination spins were relatively simple. The choreography for the first third of the program was pretty lame and in general the presentation suffered from awkward arms and a total lack of grace. He received five second place marks, a third and a fourth with his second place marks going down 1 to 2 tenths.

The 18-year old hopes to defend his 1999 Sparkassen Cup title, but he faces strong competition from Timothy Goebel (USA) who beat World Champion Alexei Yagudin at Skate America. 1998 European Bronze Medalist Alexander Abt of Russia and French Champion Stanick Jeannette are also medal contenders. Four Continents Silver Medalist Chengjiang Li (China) is hoping to redeem himself after disappointing performances at Skate Canada. Plushenko will not be skating for points here, whereas this is a point scoring event for Goebel and Jeannette. In each discipline, $30,000 will be awarded for first place, $18,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place. Skaters placed 4th and 5th, will also be awarded $5 000 and $3,000 respectively. Additionally, Skaters in the Men's, Ladies and Dance events collect up to 12 points for first place, scoring down to 1 point for those coming in 8th. Pairs will be awarded up to12 points for the winners, ranging down to 3 points for 6th place.

2005 Superstars on Ice Skokie, Illinois , USA, May 17th, 2005 by Juli Heydorn I had arrived at Skatium Ice Arena at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon (the show was to be that night) to watch the cast of skaters practice. When I got there Emily Hughes was just about to leave and she was sitting on the bleachers with 3 other women while packing up her stuff. I asked them who had been there to practice and one of the women informed me that only Emily had been here to practice. After that Emily and the 3 women left the arena and I was the only person sitting on the bleachers in the arena. It was about 3:30 and I was just about to get up and leave when a group of people came through the doors talking and laughing - one of the people in the group was none other than Emanuel Sandhu!!! Emanuel came over to the bleachers where I was sitting. My heart was pounding so hard because he was about 10 feet away from me and I just couldn't believe it was him! He looked over at me and I looked at him (only briefly though because I didn't want to make him nervous by staring). Then a voice from the control booth called "Mr. Sandhu" to which Emanuel replied "Where is that voice from the great beyond coming from?" ... The man in the control booth said "Over here." and Emanuel found his way to the control booth and went inside. Emanuel finally got on the ice - he was very exciting to watch! After a while he handed a CD to the sound engineer and practiced the program of "Gopher/Stand Up" that he was to perform that night. He was absolutely spectacular!!! Seeing him skate live made me appreciate his skating even more!
