Daytona Beach, FL Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic Oct 3-4, 1998 Silver Blade Tours Inc. was proud to begin our first tour of the season at the "Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic," formerly named the Nice N' Easy Figure Skating Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida. Santioned by the United States Figure Skating association (USFSA) and the International Skating Union (ISU), skaters represented the United States, France, Ukraine and Russia, from new and upcoming skaters to World and Olympic Champions. Daytona Beach can now claim another "s" word to sun, sand, and now skating as this prestigious event returned to sunny Florida a second year in a row. How nice to have this event so close to home in DeLand, Florida where Silver Blade Tours, Inc. is based. The Adam's Mark, Daytona Beach Resort , located directly on the beach and across from the Ocean Center, was our place in the sun this first weekend in October. With oceanfront rooms, we had spectacular views of the sun rising over the ocean and a beautiful full moon shining its light over the sea at night. Swimming, shopping and visiting the local sights was on the agenda along with our nights of spectacular skating. This event featured some of the best ladies and men's skaters from around the world. Michelle Kwan, 1998 U.S., Worlds, Goodwill Games Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist headlined the ladies along with fellow Americans Nicole Bobeck, 1995 U.S. Champion, National World and Olympic competitor and Angela Nikodinov, upcoming National competitor. Russian Maria Butyrskaya, 1998 European Champion, World and Olympic competitor, France's Surya Bonaly five time European Champion, World and Olympic competitor, and 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist Elizabeth Manley from Canada, completed the roster of lady skaters.

At the 1988 World Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, early into his long program, Browning, then 21 and cocky as all get out, sprung high into the air, spun four times, and landed firmly on the outside edge of his right skate. He was angry with himself for spinning out a little on the landing, but he did hold the edge and, around the rink, fans who'd just witnessed history in the making erupted in applause. U.S. star Brian Boitano, Canada's Brian Orser and the Soviet Union's Viktor Petrenko would finish one-two-three on the podium that night, but it was the kid from Caroline, Alta., back in sixth place, who is best remembered. Browning's toe loop was the first quad ever landed in competition, and it changed men's figure skating forever. Nowadays a man couldn't win a major event without a quad in his repertoire. Canadians have always pushed athletic boundaries. The late Moe Norman won dozens of tournaments in his day, but it was his self-made golf swing that produced what many regard as the purest ball striking ever seen in the game. Jim Hunter, Dave Irwin, Dave Murray, Steve Podborski and Ken Read gave the world a new euphemism for lunatics who take the shortest, most death-defying route down a ski hill: Crazy Canucks. And in figure skating, Barbara Ann Scott, Petra Burka, Don Jackson and Vern Taylor were all first to land various jumps that raised the bar for everyone who followed. Likewise, Elvis Stojko threw down the gauntlet with his precedent-setting combination jumpsthe first quadruple/double toe loop, in 1991, and his flawless first quad-triple at a Grand Prix event in Hamilton, in 1997.

I attended the 2pm show in Philadelphia. Make that the 2:40 show. The show started at least a half hour late, and then they said they were waiting because it was raining out. Please! They do this every year, and it was only drizzling at that time! The advanced order form for next year is really nice...it has a little picture of each of the skaters listed in the program. Also, I really liked the program this year. The background isn’t black, and there is a picture of the skater in the background on the page (hard to explain.) Same price as last year ($15). There weren’t any cast photos like last year, but they might later on the tour. Oksana and Michael Weiss were on a local morning show at 8am today. Michael looked half asleep. Oksana said that she wanted another Olympic gold medal. They kept saying that the show was at night! I was worried they wouldn’t get there in time (they were still in Maryland). Oksana said she was going to drive to Philly herself (the host said something like “they make you drive?” LOL) because she was going to stop in Delaware first. I don’t know if this rush hurt them, or they were just tired, or the ice was bad, or what, but it seemed to be an off night for all the skaters. I didn’t take detailed notes (didn’t write all jumps down), but I think just about everyone had at least one mistake. I don’t think there were many falls though, just little things like touch downs, falling out of a jump, etc.

I saw all kinds of great stuff. I now have info. on some Stars on Ice programs and Viktor and Scott Davis' new programs. Paul Wylie SOI number (maybe part of a group number?) to Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog". I only saw him practicing one footwork section w/Michael Seibert but it looks great! I guess we'll have to wait and see about the rest of it. Not exactly a typical music choice for Paul. Bechke & Petrov SOI number (maybe part of the same group number?) to Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". I didn't get to see much of it, but they were practicing a new lift off the ice that looks promising. They're doing a variation on that lift Brasseur & Eisler do ("fly high & say bye") that looks great. I can't remember if I've seen them do it before or not. I think the LZ number will be good, but very out of character for Elena & Denis. I talked to a woman who had been to a lot of practices and she said she had told Denis how surprised she was that they were doing Led Zeppelin. Reportedly he rolled his eyes and said "I know, I know, not for me!". Well, I guess we know how he feels about that, LOL.
