Photo by Joseph Sywenkyj Simsbury, CT, March 2001.......On the eve of the Chornobyl 15th Anniversary, Ukrainian ice-skating champion Viktor Petrenko invited his friends from the international skating community to help him raise public awareness and funds to help some of the thousands of children who are still being affected by the world's worst nuclear disaster. On March 2d and 3d, at the International Skating Center of Connecticut, Petrenko headlined an all-star cast that included American champion Brian Boitano, French sensation Philippe Candeloro and US Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen in "Viktory for Kids", a two-night benefit performance for the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). Proceeds from the sold-out event will be earmarked for the creation of the Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Petrenko's hometown of Odessa. In an extensive interview with the Hartford Courant and USA Today, Petrenko explained his motivation for organizing this unique benefit performance for CCRF. "I received a lot from my city to get where I am today. That's where I grew up.That's where I learned to skate. Now this is my chance to pay them back." Petrenko described the many people he had seen in Odessa who had survived Chornobyl, only to be stricken with cancer or to see their children stricken with birth defects.

Viktor Petrenko: "You want to do something in your life to help other people" by Natalie Korsheniuk Pollock
Special to The Ukrainian Weekly SIMSBURY, Conn. - Viktor Petrenko was a sickly child when he was growing up in Odesa on the Black Sea. At age 31, the Olympic champion was skating and leaping in Connecticut on March 2-3 to raise money for children suffering deadly and disfiguring diseases in his hometown. "You want to do something in your life to help other people, and when it happens, you feel satisfied," he explained. "Even if only one child feels better, I feel I did what I needed to do." Mr. Petrenko realized he needed to help the children in his part of Ukraine who were dealing with the effects of the nuclear disaster in Chornobyl after he met Nadia and Dr. Zenon Matkiwsky, founders of the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). They met by chance at the Ukrainian Consulate in New York City two years ago, and last spring they got together again to discuss the possibility of a benefit performance starring Mr. Petrenko and his world-class colleagues. CCRF staff and volunteers organized the event at the International Skating Center of Conn. (ISCC) in Simsbury, home base for Mr. Petrenko and his family since 1994. Together with the strength of Mr. Petrenko's name and the commitment of the center's new partners and staff, the Viktory for Kids ice show raised close to $120,000 after expenses. The proceeds will be used to modernize and equip the new Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Clinic in the Odesa Hospital.

Viktor Petrenko visits new neonatal center in his hometown ODESA - The Odesa Regional Children's Hospital in southern Ukraine on October 22 welcomed Olympic and world champion Viktor Petrenko at the grand opening of the new infant care unit re-named in his honor. The Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology delivered by the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF) and purchased with the help of over $100,000 in funds raised at the "Viktory for Kids" charity ice skating show. In March of this year, Mr. Petrenko mobilized an impressive array of international skating stars, including Brian Boitano and Sasha Cohen, to raise funds for CCRF at the International Skating Center in Simsbury, Conn. Over the past seven months, CCRF worked with the Odesa hospital to completely remodel and sanitize the ward that houses the neonatal unit. As part of its 28th airlift last May, the fund delivered and installed some of the most advanced technology available to treat newborn children suffering from respiratory complications, low birth weight and various birth defects. The equipment includes Bear Cub respirators, Novametrix pulse oxymeters, an infant warmer and other critical care components. Following a noontime press conference, Mr. Petrenko toured the facility, where he was greeted with bouquets of roses and warm embraces from the hospital staff. Accompanied by Dr. Ihor Symonenko, the director of the Neonatal Ward, and CCRF Executive Director Alexander Kuzma, Mr. Petrenko had the opportunity to observe newborn infants undergoing treatment with the help of the equipment funded by his "Viktory for Kids" initiative.
