    Interview with Tara Lipinski
by Lorrie Kim [Note: The Philadelphia City Paper commissioned and bought this article in December 1996, but could not run it for lack of space. Lipinski was in town to participate in a USFSA team pro-am competition , where she debuted what was to become her trademark, the triple loop-triple loop combination. I point to this article to prove that not all journalists were surprised by her Olympic win. LK] Let other figure skaters be content with just staying focused and skating their best. Tara Lipinski skates to win. And this is only her first year at the senior level of Olympic-eligible competition. So far in the 1995-96 skating season, the women's field has been dominated by world champion Michelle Kwan (U.S.) and world bronze medalist Irina Slutskaya (Russia), as expected. But few could have predicted that the much younger Lipinski would be so close on their heels. True, her recent silver and bronze medal finishes can be attributed in part to a women's field weakened by injury or ill health (Chen Lu, Surya Bonaly, Midori Ito and Nicole Bobek have all withdrawn from competitions against Lipinski this season). And Lipinski's detractors have complained that she concentrates on jumps to the detriment of other skating elements; that she may lose her jumping ability as she grows beyond her current 4'7", 70 lbs.; that she gets more hype than she deserves.

Ferndale woman passes skating memorabilia of past to Lipinski
February 14, 2001 Betty O'Grady waited for three hours, standing outside an elevator in the basement of the Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit. She was just 20 at the time, and there was nothing in the world she wanted more than an autograph from figure skating legend Sonja Henie. "It was 1951," O'Grady remembered. "I used to go to those Hollywood Ice Reviews, and I always wanted to meet Sonja. So I went to the hotel where I knew she was staying and took her autobiography, 'Wings on My Feet,' with me. Then I waited." One of the most popular and charismatic female athletes of all time, the Norwegian-born Henie later became a film star, and she had a following that lasted for decades. Now 69, O'Grady thought of Henie when she read in the Free Press last week that 1998 Olympic champion Tara Lipinski was performing in the Stars on Ice figure skating tour at the Palace. Henie had been the youngest Olympic figure skating champion in history until Lipinski, then 15, inherited the youngest-ever title by two months.

Tara takes a tumble and Kwan takes control
    January 9, 1998 BY JO-ANN BARNAS
    Free Press Sports Writer
She's so sixy: Michelle Kwan's perfect presentation garnered seven 6.0s from the nine judges. PHILADELPHIA She looked for comfort and found it waiting behind a deep blue curtain. Tara Lipinski, unable to hold back the tears any longer, buried her head deep into her mother's shoulder and sobbed. That was how the ladies' short program ended for one skater Thursday at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Crying away the hurt. It was a disastrous afternoon for Lipinski, 15, the defending U.S. and world champion from the Detroit Skating Club. She made an uncharacteristic mistake in the middle of her program, falling on a triple flip, and it cost her dearly. Not only was it an automatic deduction of up to .4 on a 6.0 scale, but, on an afternoon when her chief rivals shined, the mistake pushed Lipinski out of the top three and into fourth place heading into Saturday's free skate. The error could cost her a spot on the U.S. Olympic team if she doesn't skate a clean and strong long program and win a medal. Michelle Kwan, the 1996 U.S. and world champion, continued her comeback with an exquisite performance to the music of Rachmaninoff. She was placed first by each of the nine judges and received seven 6.0s for presentation thought to be the most by any woman in competitive skating history.

The ApeChild Guide to Figure Skating by Rosco There's just something magical about women's figure skating: the grace, the beauty, the elegance, the art. Oh, and I almost forgot: the CHICKS. If you're a guy, the only possible reason you have ever watched figure skatingeven if it is during the Olympicsis because 1.) your girlfriend is making you watch, which is simply pathetic; 2.) you're gay; or 3.) you're trying to catch a peek at the scantily-clad, barely-legal, and occasionally HOT skaters as they jump, twirl, and shake their booty for the judges, the audience, and yes, even YOU. You know what I'm talking about: if you squint your eyes just hard enough, it almost looks like they're dancing around in their underwear. The women's skating finals has always been one of the most highly anticipated events of the winter games. It is a tradition that has gone back to the days when guys had to suffer through the more conservative and squeaky-clean likes of Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming. But as the times changed, men were introduced to a different kind of figure skater. Perhaps the first skater that comes to mind is everyone's favorite Eastern Block hottie (and eventual

19:00- Start Reigning world champion Tara Lipinski regained the edge over fellow American teenage figure skater Michelle Kwan on Friday with a spectacular come-from-behind victory for the gold medal at the Nagano Olympics. Lipinski became the youngest-ever women's Olympic champion at 15 years and eight months two months younger than Sonja Henie of Norway when she won the women's title at the 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz. The Philadelphia native, in second place behind Kwan after Wednesday's short program, used all 35 kilograms of her tiny frame right down to the tips of her fingers and toes to pull off an expressive, emotional program featuring her original triple loop-triple loop combination jump. Kwan, the 1996 world titlist, was again relegated to a silver medal finish by Lipinski, just as she was at the world championships last March, despite a near flawless performance at the White Ring ice rink that earned 5.9s from all nine judges for presentation. Former world champion Chen Lu of China, also the bronze medalist at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, who sat out most of last season due to an injury-induced slump, had some minor landing problems but pulled through for a second consecutive bronze.

    Michelle Kwan (White-Ring, Nagano City)
19:00- Start Michelle Kwan beat top rival Tara Lipinski on Wednesday to finish in the lead after both American teenagers pulled off near flawless short programs in the women's Olympic figure skating. Kwan, the 1996 world champion and silver medalist in last winter's worlds behind Lipinski, reeled off a triple lutz-double toe loop combination, a triple toe loop and the required double axel cleanly while stepping and spinning to a piano concerto. ''I felt really good out there. I knew that I had to do all the elements precise and clean and I think I was doing them one at a time, taking my time and just thinking all the way through my performance,'' the 17-year-old Californian said. ''In the beginning of my program, I heard everybody cheer and scream and I was like, 'God, I'm in heaven.' You know, people clapping and billions of people watching (all over the world on television),'' she added. Kwan received 5.9s for presentation from all nine judges with scores for required elements ranging from 5.6 to 5.8 out of a possible six points.

At 15, Lipinski Displays Her Joy to the World
    By Jennifer Frey
    Washington Post Columnist
    Saturday, February 21, 1998; Page B1
What Lipinski did Friday night, though, was give these Olympics its most glorious performance: a stunning, spirited long program that snatched the gold medal for women's figure skating from favorite Michelle Kwan in one of the biggest upsets in this sport's history. The most common criticism of figure skating is that the favorites have such a tremendous advantage in the minds of the judges that someone else could skate the program of a lifetime and still not win. That certainly was the sense at this competition: Most observers, myself included, felt that Kwan had to fall, or make a similarly glaring mistake, in her long program in order for Lipinski to have any shot at the gold. Lipinski proved all of us wrong. Kwan floated this evening, her performance gorgeous and graceful. Lipinski soared. "I had that feeling of pure joy," Lipinski said, "and I went out there and put it in my program."
