RSS Feed Princeton, NJ Weather Better watch out, Michelle Kwan, you got nothing on me Daniel Satterfield Princetonian Sports Editor And you thought I was joking. Shame on you. So here I am. Don't get me wrong — I loved taekwondo. It was physically demanding, and the team members were awesome. But let's be honest. I'm trying to get on the fast track to stardom, and I don't have that kind of time to limber up. I could always cut my tendons like Jean Claude Van Damme, but look where that got him. Sorry, Jean Claude, but seriously, "The Quest"? You can do better than that, buddy. Anyway, with a little soul-searching, I found out figure skating and I have a lot in common. In fact, unlike taekwondo, my family has a storied history with figure skating. No, none of us skate, but we used to watch it on TV. In fact, my parents first bought cable for the sole purpose of watching the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. They taped every single day of the competitions and particularly liked figure skating. The sport may have even influenced my parents' decision to adopt me. I was born in South Korea. The next Olympic games in 1988 were held in Seoul, South Korea. Coincidence? I think not.

I have loved skating for as long as I can remember. I personally have never stepped onto an ice rink, but am enchanted with the beauty of the sport. I have fallen in love with the artistry and athleticism all rolled into one. In fact, many people agree with me. Figure skating is the second most watched sport on television after NFL football. Kwan appears fatigued. He's just returned from Michelle's training facility in Lake Arrowhead, about a two-hour drive from the Golden Pheasant restaurant. The Winter Olympics are still three weeks away, but the stress of the ongoing controversy involving Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan and, indirectly, Michelle seems to have sapped Kwan's energy. "That's not a sacrifice. Skating is like a gift. I give it to them, and I get happiness out of it." A middle-aged woman catches Kwan's attention and shakes her fist. "We're rooting for her," the woman nearly shouts in an effort to be heard above the din. Kwan thanks her with a nod and a quick wave as she departs. The decision of the U.S. Olympic Committee to let the beleaguered Harding compete at Lillehammer, Norway, is not one of Kwan's favorite subjects. "We never pay attention to it," he says. "Michelle just wants to be a good skater. That's the bottom line. There's a lot of competition after the Olympics anyway." At the age of 13, Michelle Kwan may be the brightest young star on the U.S. figure skating scene. Her potential is tremendous. I have always loved watching Michelle skate ever since the first time I saw her during the infamous Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan soap opera. I finally got to see her skate in person for the first and only (but hopefully not last) time on December 11 and 12, 1998.
