In the two years since that night in Lillehammer, Oksana Baiul has blossomed into a lovely young woman of striking grace and considerable wealthshe is a millionairewhile the sport she rescued has become the most desirable divertissement of the athletic world. Since October, not a week has passed in the U.S. without a televised exhibition or official competition on ice, and only the armored gladiators of American professional football attract a larger audience than skating's blithe spirits in spandex and sequins. The 1996 World Championships taking place in Edmonton, Canada, this week only underline that allure. The eight-day competition will reach 167 million viewers in 45 countries. Many of the Edmonton skaters were on hand in St. Petersburg last month to celebrate competitive figure skating's centenary in the city where, in February 1896, four European men competed in the first world championship. The televised Centennial on Ice was seen live and on rerun around the world. What is skating's big appeal? "The kids watch it, the grandparents watch it, the mum watches it, the dad watches it,'' says Doug Leigh, coach of two-time world champion Elvis Stojko of Canada. "It's about as well-rounded family entertainment as you're going to get.''

September 21, 2002 Cleveland, OH Nancy Hodan Scott introduces his friend Yuka Sato who takes the ice in a bright red velvet dress with a "T" design in the front. Her deep edges and delicate touch across the ice surfance mesmorized me. Yuka feels every note of the music and appears to float across the ice with her balletic style. her jumps, spins and footwork were breathtaking and her lovely smile uplifting. The audience giggled and laughed as Scott performed his "Double Bogie Blues" number. Standing at center ice wiggling his rear he got the audience going. Dressed in those silly plaid pants with skate covers that look like golf shoes and a tan cap, he was set to entertain. Scott lugged out a golf cart complete with clubs to pull off this comical routine. he jumped, spinned and did that incredibly fast footwork which got the crowd cheering for more. Then he did his well known back flip while holding a golf club. The guy's amazing!! Scott announces one of his angels is about to take the ice. The beautiful Ekaterina Gordeeva appears dressed in an orange velvet dress with an open back with ties. Skating to a song with an upbeat tempo titled "Paradise" by Kaci. A pretty song with pleasant lyrics and perfect for Katia's return to the ice. Her versatility shines throogh as she performs jumps, spins and some perky footwork. What a pleasure it was to see Katia skating again, it reminded me just how much she has been missed.

As a boy, he was plagued by an illness that baffled doctors and he appeared destined to remain only a spectator. When his ailment was finally diagnosed correctly, his courage and determination led him to try figure skating. That first taste of the graceful sport brought out the fierce competitor in this pint-sized powerhouse. He immersed himself in skating and went on to become one of its best and most recognizable athletes. In 1981, he won the first of four consecutive national and world titles. The Olympic gold medal he won in Sarajevo in 1984 was the first claimed by an American male since 1960. His success and popularity led to a longtime association with CBS as a sports analyst.

Many of my favorite ice skaters are shown, including Brian Orser, Jozef Sabovcik "Jumping Joe", Steven Cousins, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Yuka Sato, Jenni Meno and Todd Sand among this talented group. One of the highlights of the show is when all three Olympic medalists (Hamilton, Orser, Sabovcik) from 1984, took to the ice for the first time together to skate to a musical number that appeared to be lots of fun! Michael Feinstein's performance works so beautifully to the artistry of the skaters. Along with Michael singing classic American Songbook tunes such as; Smile, Johnny One Note, Alexander's Ragtime Band, and the haunting and moving song, Only One Life, there's a special vocalist on board, who's lovely and powerful and her name is Darlene Love. She brought a bluesy warmth and sultriness to the show. Love's rendition of Cry Me a River was gorgeous.
