Hamilton, Scott Scovell
Hamilton was adopted at six weeks of age by two university professors, joining an older born-to daughter. Later his family adopted another son. He stopped growing when he was three or four years old, and spent four or five years going the rounds of doctors and hospitals in an attempt to diagnose his condition. Several diagnoses were made, including cystic fibrosis and Schwachman-Diamond syndrome, but none was correct, and he was put on a number of different diets to correct the problem, which was an inability of his body to absorb nutrients. When he was nine, however, the problem simply went away and he began to grow again, although he never grew to be more than 5' 3½" (1.61m) tall and 108 lb. (49kg). His mother died in 1977. - Select a category - All New Arrivals Adoption Books Lifebooks Scrapbooking e-books click here He began skating when he was nine and became a champion at 22, winning 16 championships in a row. He won the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and the World Championships in 1981-84. He has been elected to the Figure Skating Hall of Fame and received the Jacques Favart Award, the highest award of the International Skating Union. Since 1984 he has been a professional entertaining skater and is very involved in medical charities for children. In 1997 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.

The card features original artwork by cancer survivor Merideth Shamszad and words of support from Hamilton, and is part of The Art of Healing: Expressions of Cancer Survivors
"When I was battling cancer, receiving cards with words of hope and encouragement from family, friends and other cancer patients helped me stay positive and gave me strength to fight the illness," said Hamilton. "I hope that messages of care and support sent with the help of this card will serve as an inspiration for cancer patients to stay strong and live their life to the fullest."
More than 1.3 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States in 2003 . This devastating illness and its treatment often affect the physical and the emotional well-being of patients, their families and loved ones. A significant obstacle is the extreme exhaustion caused by anemia, a debilitating and common side effect of chemotherapy, which may prevent cancer patients from participating in and enjoying daily activities.
Among cancer patients polled in a recent national survey, more than half (60 percent) reported that exhaustion had the most negative impact on their daily lives, and more than one-third (36 percent) cited it as affecting their emotional well-being

Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent causes of physical disability among adults, and the knee is one of the most commonly affected joints. This is a painful condition that affects millions of Americans and can make walking, climbing, and other daily activities difficult. In severe cases, osteoarthritis of the knee may require surgery or it can lead to disability.
ORTHOVISC is an injectable form of hyaluronic acid that has been marketed outside of the United States since 1996. It is indicated for patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative nonpharmacologic therapy and to simple analgesics, e.g. acetaminophen. Ortho Biotech licensed the U.S. rights to ORTHOVISC from Anika Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:ANIK) in December 2003.

Oct. 22, 1963- Figure skater. In addition to his Olympic gold medal, Brian Boitano has won four United States national championships and two world titles. Ironically, it was his loss to Orser in the 1987 world championships that marked the turning point in Boitano's career. Following that defeat, he hired the skating choreographer Sandra Bezic, who revamped his style, adding to his natural athletic gifts more artistry and emotion. That changeover had much to do with his Olympic triumph. Aug. 28, 1958- Skater. Six weeks after his birth on August 28, 1958, Scott Hamilton was adopted by Ernest and Dorothy Hamilton, professors of, respectively, biology and family relations at Bowling Green [Ohio] State University. He has an older sister, Susan, and a younger brother, Steven, who is also adopted. When he was about two, Scott contracted a mysterious illness that caused him to stop growing. Tests indicated that the boy was, in effect, suffering from malnutrition because his body was not digesting and absorbing food properly, but his physicians were at a loss as to how to correct the condition. Although bedridden for the better part of the next few years, Scott "never really felt sick," as he recalled to Jane Leavy of the Washington Post (January 18, 1984). He "just felt short."
