As a mode of transportation for warfare and hunting in Northern Europe, skating was a swift way to cross frozen lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Warriors and hunters crafted makeshift skates of reindeer antlers or elk bones, and later iron and steel. By the 16th century, skaters were transporting goods across frozen waterways. In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games when it was added to the Olympic program for the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. The singles and pairs competitions also appeared in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games.

1989-90 was the first season of Oksana and Evgeni as a dance team. They skated to "Zorbas the Greek" and gave an impressive debut. There next FD was something entirely different: in 1992, an Olympic season, they portrayed robots/machines, using extravagant, modern music. And all of this despite of their bad luck with injuries. Especially Evgeni was struggling with his knee throughout their amateur career. Such a knee injury forced them to withdraw from all competitions during season 1994-95 except Worlds. Nevertheless, they skated a brilliant Quickstep (OD) and debuted a very solid "Steppin' Out" freedance in Birmingham. I liked this program although it seemed to be a bit conservative for them. Season 1996-97 also brought a new exhibition piece to "You'll See" by Madonna, one of my all-time favs. They told a whole story on the ice, including some new and inventive moves. The end is equally spectacular: Evgeni is lying on the ice, Oksana is stepping over him, throwing his jacket at him. But this Olympic title also meant the end of their partnership. They went on tour with Champions on Ice, one last time, skating to "Frozen" by Madonna and split afterwards. Someone once said Evgeni had two options: revolutionising ice dancing in the pro circuit or staying mentally sane. He opted for the second alternative. Ironically, he teamed up with Maia Usova. I saw their skating in person and I found it amazing how happy these two looked while skating together. Their programs didn't impress me that much but still, I felt happy for them because they seemed more at ease than during their old partnerships.

Milan, Italy Jan. 13-18, 1998 1998 European Figure Skating Championships Dear Skating Friends, The Filaforum in Milan, Italy was the sight of the 1998 European Figure Skating Championships. It was an exciting competition just weeks prior to the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. I traveled to Milan the day after completing a week of hosting our tour to the 1998 Nationals in Philadelphia. How exciting it was to arrive in Milan and stay at one of the press hotels, the Forte Agip. The Filaforum was conveniently located about ten minutes by bus and it was nice to see some familiar faces, namely world renown Charles White, photographer for many major figure skating publications such as Patinage, American Skating World and Skating Magazine, and Ron Scheurer, Journalist for the same publications. I was fortunate to be their "sidekick" for the whole week after gaining credentials from the U.S. Press. The competition took on a new perspective as I was able to see "behind the scenes" and attend press conferences where I met photographers and journalists. It was wonderful to see most of the skaters who would be participating in the Olympics a few weeks away. The Russians dominated all the champion titles and most of the medal positions. Seeing the new European Champions such as Russia's men's champion Alexi Yagudin, Ladies Champions Maria Butyrskaya, Pairs Champions Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, and Dance Champions Pasha Grishuk and Evgeny Platov was exciting. I was also excited about seeing upcoming skating phenom, Eveni Plushenko of Russia. Look for him as a strong medal contender in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Postcard from Minneapolis, MN Site of the 1998 World Figure Skating Championships Dear Skating Friends, Minneapolis, the "City of Waters" was the site of the 1998 World Figure Skating Championships. Silver Blade Tours, Inc. stayed at one of the "official press hotels," the Hyatt Regency at Nicollett Mall, conveniently located downtown. Tour participants began each day with a hearty buffet breakfast, and updated results of the Championships provided by the Local Organizing Committee. We started our tour with a wonderful Italian Welcome Dinner at Pronto's Ristorante. Tour participants also received a welcome gift consisting of the Official Worlds Pin and a hand-carved wooden skate ornament. The Dolci Dessert platter featuring miniature deserts was a big hit and each table shared a number of platters of assorted sorbets and pastries. YUMMY! A morning sight seeing trip around Minneapolis and St. Paul included viewing the cities differences in architecture, the modern Minneapolis and the more traditional St. Paul, including the Metrodome, and the Minnehaha Falls. We all made a trip to the wonderful Mall of America and had a great time shopping and just browsing. The Target Center was accessible either by shuttle bus transfers or by walking the climate controlled skyways.
