LOL, he typed, He wasn't really "laughing out loud," but he knew that was understood. You're silly, funny-girl, he typed, his long fingers flying over the keyboard. You like me silly came the reply, letter by letter. Of course I like you, silly, I've chatted with you most of the night all winter! I like you too. He grinned in genuine warmth for the distant typist he faced over the ether. He'd never meet her, not IRL, in real life. He'd never even seen her picture. She wasn't some newbie AOLer, to send out pictures to just anyone. I don't want to open that can of worms anyway. He scrubbed his hand through his long, shaggy blonde hair and sighed. He probably never would meet the "funny girl." With all that was possible in his line of work, there was much that was not possible. "Hey man! We're going to the club. Wanna come?" BRB , he typed quickly. k , came the reply.

Robin Cousins (ice skating)
Sports Personality 1980
What do you remember about the night you won? I was just overawed by the stream of incredible sportsmen and women walking into the studio. Robin Cousins features on Simply the Best, BBC 1,
1900-1930 GMT, Wed 10 Dec Winter sports is quite a small community so for me it was a night for star-spotting - and there was absolutely no thought in my head that I would win the trophy. I was up against people like Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson and my event had been 10 months earlier so really I was just thrilled that people remembered me. When I heard my name read out, I remember sitting there stunned for what felt like half an hour!

Bio
Since becoming a professional, Elizabeth Anne Manley has been touring with Ice Capades as Cinderella. Her obligations to the show means that we see relatively little of her at the competitions and venues that Brian Orser and Kurt Browning frequent, giving some the impression that she has fallen off the face of the earth. Fortunately she is staring to "get out more", appearing in touring shows with wider appeal and televised events, so we can be reminded what a well-rounded, exciting performer she is.

StarSkates Salute To Barry Manilow Date: October 9, 1999
Place: At the Mandalay Bay Events Center - Las Vegas, NV Author: Barb Steinberg I flew to Las Vegas to attend the show with my friends Sharon and Suzan from San Diego, CA. Our seats were wonderful... just about 10 rows from the ice, near the stage and where the skaters enter the ice.  While Suzan went in search of some programs (they had run out!), the director asked the audience to 'practice' clapping and showing our appreciation for the skaters.  Naturally we had to do this a few times, until we got it 'right'.  A camera was on our section the whole time!  We were also near to where the press was sitting.  The coach of the Russian pair teams sat in front of us, to our right, and Surya Bonaly and her mom were in the first row of our section.  While the venue was not sold-out, the main sections near the ice were full.  It was a very enthusiastic crowd - split maybe 50/50 - 50% there for Barry, 50% there for skating. I will note here, being a skating fan and all, that any time Kristi Yamaguchi is the headliner, the show will include the "A" list of figure skaters.  This show was no exception.  It was a great blend of both pro (ineligible) and amateur (eligible) skaters.  Many are my personal favorites.  And anything that Robin Cousins is a part of, is top notch and very professional.  I honestly didn't know what to expect out there on the ice.  But I don't think the skating fans or the Manilow fans were disappointed. Also, even though the skaters came out in a certain order, that doesn't mean that it will be shown on TV in that particular order or that all the performances will make it past the editing room floor.  The first act only had 8 single routines (lasting about 35 minutes) after the opening number. The music seemed to be slowed down a bit also.  The first act also had more of the greatest hits, familiar tunes.  In the LV Review-Journal interview with Barry about this show, Barry noted that they would be doing skating routines to "quirky cuts from the albums".  So, apparently the "quirky" songs were saved for the second act.  Keep in mind that it's still early in

Star Skates' Salute to Barry Manilow show review Date: October 9th, 1999
By: Amy Lidster/Blades On Ice While Cousins did not skate in this show, he plans to skate in the "StarSkates On Broadway" later this year besides his duties as producer and choreographer for the entire series. Cousins' enthusiasm for adding distinct dimensions to figure skating and performance art is palatable. "The performers on the stage change when they see the visual interpretation of what they're singing. It gives another emotional value to the performance," Cousins observed. The opening montage of some of Manilow's hits culminated with Manilow himself presenting the cast, beginning with two-time world champion Alexei Yagudin. Skating to "Come Fly With Me," Yagudin covered the ice with good speed and effortlessly completed two triple jumps despite icing a sore ankle during the rehearsals. His sparkly bronze shirt made him fit right in with the glitzy surroundings. Making her first trip to the United States was Yagudins' mother. " She was so happy to see this city, try gambling and see me skate," he said. Sporting a new look and elegance was Denise Biellmann. Cousins choreographic touch is well placed and evident in this performance. Wearing a white, lacey dress, Biellmann employed her trademark spins and athleticism while maintaining a feminine quality throughout this lovely program skated to "All the Time". More true to form in "Avenue C," Biellmann relied on her usual more aggressive style while maintaining a smooth, seamless quality.

Todd Eldredge : The "most decorated" male skater of his time, Todd Eldredge's extensive career has included six US National titles, the 1996 World title, and five other World medals (3 silver, 2 bronze). He has won US national titles at the novice, junior, and senior levels. Like Kurt Browning, he was a three-time Olympian but never medaled. His highest placement was 4th at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano. Todd turned pro directly after the 2002 Olympic Games, and joined the Stars on Ice tour. His first performance was on Feb. 26, 2002. Todd has signed to a six-year contract with Stars on Ice, so SOI fans will get to know him very well over the next few years. One interesting thing to note is that Todd is a clockwise spinner and jumper.

WINTER OLYMPICS FIGURE SKATING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1908 Like many winter sports, FIGURE SKATING 's roots grew from necessity. As a mode of transportation for warfare and hunting in Northern Europe, skating was a swift way to cross frozen lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Warriors and hunters crafted makeshift skates of reindeer antlers or elk bones, and later iron and steel. By the 16th century, skaters were transporting goods across frozen waterways. In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games when it was added to the Olympic program for the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. The singles and pairs competitions also appeared in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games.

Skaters and autobiographies
Homophobia affects all male skaters, regardless of their personal sexual orientation. Many assume that all male skaters are gay; even when individual male skaters are known to be straight, they are frequently the target of anti-gay slurs just for being in the sport. When it comes to autobiography or authorized biography, male skaters have taken a number of approaches to this phenomenon. In a few cases, the silence has spoken loudly. Of the male skater autobiographies Rainbow Ice is aware of, only one, Icebreaker: the Autobiography of Rudy Galindo , with Eric Marcus, acknowledges the subject as gay. Another, Toller Cranston's Zero Tollerance , with Martha Lowder Kimball, describes a same-sex rendezvous, although Cranston does not identify as gay or bisexual. Of the other male skater autobiographies, there are a few which employ a curious "don't ask, don't tell" strategy. It cannot be easy to decide to collaborate with a writer on the story of one's life while omitting any mention of a love life whatsoever, but this is the choice made by Brian Orser in his 1988 book A Skater's Life with Steve Milton, and by the 1998 authorized biography
