European men's champion and home favorite Yevgeny Plushenko skated an almost flawless free program on Saturday to win the grand prix final for the third time in the last four years.
But 18-year-old American Sasha Cohen upset world champion and last season's winner Irina Slutskaya to win the women's crown and denied the Russia ns a clean sweep of all four titles.
World and European champions Irina Lobacheva and Ilya Averbukh scored a convincing victory in ice dancing, while European gold medalists Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin beat Chinese world champions Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao to win the pairs competition.
Cohen, competing in her first grand prix final, skated an inspired free program to the music of great Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov, getting top marks from all seven judges.
She had a disappointing showing in Friday's long program, but promised to skate better on Saturday.

She was ranked number one by the International Skating Union entering the 2004-05 season and took the 2004 World Championships silver medal. However, Cohen has been plagued with chronic back pain that caused her to sit out two ISU Grand Prix events already this season, the Smart Ones Skate America and the Cup of China. After time off the ice she recently won the bronze medal at the Marshalls World Cup on Dec. 3. The ApeChild Guide to Figure Skating by Rosco There's just something magical about women's figure skating: the grace, the beauty, the elegance, the art. Oh, and I almost forgot: the CHICKS. If you're a guy, the only possible reason you have ever watched figure skatingeven if it is during the Olympicsis because 1.) your girlfriend is making you watch, which is simply pathetic; 2.) you're gay; or 3.) you're trying to catch a peek at the scantily-clad, barely-legal, and occasionally HOT skaters as they jump, twirl, and shake their booty for the judges, the audience, and yes, even YOU. You know what I'm talking about: if you squint your eyes just hard enough, it almost looks like they're dancing around in their underwear. The women's skating finals has always been one of the most highly anticipated events of the winter games. It is a tradition that has gone back to the days when guys had to suffer through the more conservative and squeaky-clean likes of Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming. But as the times changed, men were introduced to a different kind of figure skater. Perhaps the first skater that comes to mind is everyone's favorite Eastern Block hottie (and eventual

FIGURE SKATING: Countdown to Turin begins
Skaters are looking to 2006 Olympics
    January 13, 2005 BY JO-ANN BARNAS
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER PORTLAND, Ore. Three years ago, it was difficult to comprehend, easy to ignore. When Michelle Kwan and Tim Goebel captured Olympic bronze medals in ladies and men's figure skating at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, thoughts of Turin, Italy, weren't exactly spinning in their head. BLADE CHAMPIONS What: U.S. Figure Skating Championships. When: Through Sunday. Where : Portland, Ore.; Rose Garden Arena and Memorial Coliseum. TV: Today 11 p.m.-1 a.m. (ESPN2). Friday 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. (ESPN2). Saturday 4-6 p.m. and 8-11 p.m. (ABC, Channel 7 in Detroit). Jan. 23 1:30-3:30 p.m. (ABC, taped). Schedule: Today junior pairs free skate, junior free dance, senior men short program, senior ladies short program. Friday junior men free skate, senior free dance, senior pairs free skate. Saturday senior men free skate, senior ladies free skate. Sunday Chevy Skating Spectacular (exhibition). Time has changed that. Just 13 months remain until the 2006 Winter Olympics, and there's a sense among competitors and coaches at this week's U.S. Figure Skating Championships that the countdown to Turin has begun.

That year she finished a surprising second to reigning champ Michelle Kwan in the 2000 U.S. women's national championships. After missing much of 2001 with an injured back, Cohen again finished second to Kwan at the 2002 U.S. championships. so easily abused
Elsewhere, of course, there had been all manner of sporting upset: D'backs over Yanks, Pats over Rams, Tiger chased in the first round of match play. It got me thinking. Yes, yes, sure: Judged sports are, by their nature, subjective. But isn't it awful that a skater can't come from behind and surge to glory? That's the very quintessence of athletic achievement. The comeback. The pass or dunk or kick with .01 on the clock. So yesterday morning I started thinking about figure skating, where, at the time, Kwan, the Russian Irina Slutskaya, American Sasha Cohen and Hughes stood one through four. Too bad, I mused, that the kids can't jump up in the standings if they really crank one tonight. Too bad. Why can't that happen in figure skating? I put the question to my colleague, Alice Park, as we sat at the Delta Center waiting for the final group to skate. "Well," she explained patiently, "it's because if Hughes skates great and Cohen's behind her then she has to beat Kwan. But if she does that, then Slutskaya has to beat Kwan for Hughes to win, because if Slutskaya is second to Kwan tonight then the short program is brought to bear and so Hughes, even though she beat Kwan, would finish second to Kwan and Slutskaya, who lost to Kwan, would finish behind Hughes and. . ."

She was 16 years old and previously had never won a U.S or world senior championship. In fourth place after the short program, Hughes came back with a near-flawless long program to pass reigning world champion Michelle Kwan, Russian Irina Slutskaya and fellow teen Sasha Cohen Hughes's win was reminiscent of the 1998 Nagano Olympics, when the heavy favorite Kwan was beaten by newcomer Tara Lipinski. Skating Diva: Slutskaya Wins 2002 Worlds, Kwan Silver, Suguri Bronze After three silver medals in the past four years, Irina Slutskaya of Russia finally claimed her first World title with a determined effort. The Olympic silver medalist stepped out of Kwan's shadow by landing six triples in a clean performance that was awarded with six first place marks. Slutskaya, who is only the second Russian woman to win a World title, has now won five World medals including three silvers and one bronze since 1996.
"I am just happy," Slutskaya said. "This is my seventh World Championships and first gold medal so I am just happy." Four-time World champion Michelle Kwan (Torrance, Calif.), was unable to defend her World title but added her name to the U.S. record books by winning the silver medal at the 2002 World Figure Skating Championships in Japan March 22.
The Olympic bronze medalist entered the free skate in third place and needed a great performance and some luck to win her third straight and fifth career World title on Saturday night. As she has done before, Kwan delivered a clean performance although she doubled the tail end of her planned triple toe-triple toe combination. Kwan received marks ranging from 5.7-5.8 for technical merit and 5.7-5.9 for presentation with only three judges awarding her first place marks.
"I am happy with what I have done," Kwan said. "The important thing is that I came out and skated well … the only thing I messed up was leaving out the triple-triple."

Once every decade or so emerges a skater who charms the world into seeing her as the girl next door, animated by a pure passion for the ice. The one that pops instantly into most American minds is Michelle Kwan. According to a recent poll, she is more universally admired by Americans than any other female athlete, including Serena Williams. CONTINUED BELOW
Since the age of 13 Michelle Kwan has been tagged as having the steely focus and the innate grace to be the best figure skater of her generation, maybe the best of all time. During the past decade the world watched her develop from a gawky adolescent to a poised grande dame. As of the end of the 2002-3 season she had won 7 U.S. championships and 5 world championships as many or more than any skater in history. She lived up to her early potential in every respect.
Unless you count getting to the Olympics favored for gold only to have it snatched away by some upstart. Twice. It happened in Nagano in 1998 when 15-year-old Tara Lipinsky turned in the performance of her life to edge out Kwan, then 17. It happened again in the 2002 Salt Lake City games when 16-year-old Sarah Hughes skated flawlessly after a sluggish Kwan two-footed her triple toe loop, then crash-landed her triple flip.

BROOKE GLADSTONE: If you know nothing else about the winter Olympics you know that 16 year old Sarah Hughes leaped up from 4th place to capture the gold. Figure skating is one of the most popular of the winter games, or at least the one the mosor at least the one most fraught with emotion. One of the reasons is the way the media portray the competitors as characters in a melodrama. [PRINCESS MUSIC]
MALE ANNOUNCER: They are the princesses of figure skating. [DRAMATIC MUSIC] And tonight four women will take the ice looking to join that list of legends. A 23 year old Russian who re-discovered her love for the sport. Two teenagers looking to burst out of the shadows and into the spotlight. And one skating icon hoping to prove that she can win on her own terms.
DAVID WITTENSTEIN: Abigail Feder-Kane has frequently written on the subject of figure skaters and the media, and she says the drama fuels the passion for the sport.
