Rising Popularity Of Sasha Cohen A Boon To Beef
DENVER (August 16, 2002) – Olympic skating star Sasha Cohen, who names beef as one of her favorite foods, has had a busy year, highlighted by her overwhelming selection as the “hottest woman in sports” by a FoxSports.com on-line poll in July. Sasha received 75 percent of the more than 100,000 votes in the two-day poll. The beef industry’s Joint Youth Education and Information Subcommittee selected the rising figure skating sensation in 2001 as its spokesperson through a partnership with the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Publicity surrounding Sasha Cohen and her enjoyment of beef in a healthy lifestyle was just one of many successful efforts by the subcommittee to reach its primary target audience, girls ages 8-12. Successful efforts by the subcommittee throughout the past months include the BurgerTown (www.burgertown.com) web site, the development of a program for Girl Scouts troops, development of a new school kit and continued placement of classroom education materials highlighting beef’s nutrient benefits.

Beef Industry Youth Spokesperson Will Skate At The Olympics
DENVER (January 25, 2002) – Beef industry youth spokesperson Sasha Cohen is headed for the Winter Olympics, having made the U.S. Figure Skating Team after winning the silver medal at the 2002 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championship in Los Angeles on January 12. At the same time, the U.S. Figure Skating Association (USFSA) has renewed its partnership with the beef industry, paving the way for more nutrition information to be distributed throughout its communication network. Beef industry nutrition education programs are funded by beef producers through their $1-per-head checkoff and are coordinated for the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) and state beef councils by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Cohen placed second at the Los Angeles competition, coming in behind Michelle Kwan. They and Sarah Hughes, who placed third, will represent the U.S. at the Olympics next month in Salt Lake City.

Kwan Cruises to Lead at U.S. Championships
Cohen Second After The Short Program
By Amy Shipley Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 14, 2005; Page D01 PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 13 As usual, Michelle Kwan commandeered the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, taking over the ice as if it were her own personal stage. Skating last in Thursday night's short program at the Rose Garden, Kwan accepted the challenge from Sasha Cohen and answered it with aplomb, skating elegantly and without mistakes to wrestle the lead from Cohen entering Saturday's deciding long program. Wearing a blood red costume, Kwan, who is seeking her ninth U.S. title, effortlessly hit a double Axel and triple-double combination to start her performance, then cruised to a finish that was swallowed in the crowd's ovation and rewarded with three perfect 6.0 marks giving her a record 53 for her career. Sasha Cohen is in second place behind Michelle Kwan at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships entering Saturday's deciding long program.

Another Chance for Manon and Forsyth J. Barry Mittan The couple began skating together in March 2005. "We had been dating for two years as well as coaching together," Forsyth said, "so we knew each other well. I missed competing and decided to give it one more shot. We're not skating together for just one season so this year won't make or break us. "This is just the beginning," Manon added. "We want to make it work out for several years." Manon began skating when she was eight. "My Dad worked at the University of Delaware and saw a flyer for group lessons so he took me to skate," she recalled. She competed in freestyle for several years, beginning dance lessons when she was about 13 or 14. "My coach had a boy who was looking for a partner, so I gave it a try," she said. "I didn't like falling and I really enjoyed everything in between the jumps more than the jumps in singles. And I liked skating with somebody else as well." She competed with Chris Obzansky, then with O'Meara.

Ted Leung on the air
Ted Leung on the air: Open Source, Java, Python, and ... Thu, 01 Jan 2004 Figure skating: sport, art, or soap opera? I'm not big on sports. I wasn't very athletic when I was young, and I've shied away from most sports. It wasn't until college that I started picking up athletic physical activities ultimate frisbee and ice skating of all kinds. I think that it's harder to avidly follow a sport that you haven't participated in. The major sports that I've followed in my life are major league baseball (when I was a kid and we played lots of backyard wiffleball), and figure skating. For some reason following ice hockey just doesn't get into my blood, although I enjoy a good hockey game, I'm just not into it enough to follow it. Figure skating is something else, because I've actually tried to do it, and I understand what people are supposed to be doing. It also combines my interest in music, so there's another plus. Tell someone that you're interested in figure skating, and many people will tell you it isn't a sport. The judging has a lot to do with it. I suspect the the outfits and music have something to do with it as well. That's fine by me, I don't really get too hung up on the competitive / scoring aspects of it, even though I can critique. All sports have their social / political dimension, and skating is no different. The "semi-sport" nature of it seems to exacerbate it. Take for example this week's news that American sensation Sasha Cohen is

PAUL, Minn. - Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen have entered the Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic, the first international event of the Olympic season. The meet will take place Oct. 8, with $200,000 in prize money. It will use the ISU's new points judging system, with each skater performing one free skate program. Many will debut their Olympic season routines. Kwan, the five-time world and nine-time U.S. champion, is seeking her third Olympic berth this year. The national championships in January in St. Louis will determine those berths. Kwan won silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002. DisplayAds ('Middle');

Sneaking away with gold
How Hughes impossibly vaulted ahead of Kwan, Slutskaya
Posted: Friday February 22, 2002 3:29 AM
SALT LAKE CITY If you didn't think skating scoring was screwy before Thursday night, you may be asking: How is it that Michelle Kwan was ahead of Sarah Hughes before Irina Slutskaya skated, only to finish behind Hughes after Slutskaya performed? This is the magic of fractured placement, the scoring system that sounds like knee surgery gone awry. Hughes was clearly a deserving winner of Thursday night's long program, but because of the scoring system that the ISU wants to abolish, Hughes needed Slutskaya to skate precisely as she did no worse, but no better in order to win the gold medal. First, a primer in skating scoring: Marks in the long program count for two-thirds of a skater's score, with the first third coming from the short program. But all those 5.8s and 5.9s are merely means to rank the skaters. If the best skater in either program receives significantly better marks than the skater ranked one spot below her, her lead over that skater is no greater than if the margin of difference between them were one-tenth of a point from one judge. In order for Skater A to gain an advantage over Skater B, she needs first to receive higher marks than Skater B and then to have other skaters ranked in between the two of them. Here's how that played out in the ladies' competition in Salt Lake. The standings and placements after the short program were as follows:

Shortly after her routine, Sarah Hughes admitted it was the finest performance of her career. AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Another American teen-ager is wearing the Olympic gold medal that was supposed to belong to Michelle Kwan. Sound familiar? Sarah Hughes, with the performance of her young life, soared from fourth place to win the free skate and the title Thursday night in one of the biggest upsets in Olympic figure skating history. While Hughes played the same role as Tara Lipinski four years ago, Kwan made two major mistakes to fall to third, behind Russian Irina Slutskaya, who won the silver medal. "I skated for pure enjoyment," the 16-year-old Hughes said. "That's how I wanted my Olympic moment to be." It was a moment that stunned nearly everyone including Hughes, who was sitting in the dressing room when Kwan and Slutskaya fell out of the top spots with ordinary programs.

Time for a Little Respect
A defense of figure skating. By Gina R. Dalfonzo t's not easy being a figure skating fan these days.
No, with figure skating, the worst problem of all is simply trying to find out what's going on. We're told that skating is one of the most-popular sports in the world. One poll in the 1990s had it coming in second to football, and it's long been the most-watched sport at the Winter Olympics. But you'd never know it from the media coverage. Just try to find results for any skating competition (except for U.S. nationals, worlds, or the Olympics) in the next day's newspaper. If we're extremely lucky, some stray sportswriter will do a couple of paragraphs. Most of the time, though, any analysis we get is on the level of a bunch of eighth-grade girls composing a gossip column for the school paper. I realize that the majority of skating fans are female, but that doesn't mean we couldn't handle a little serious commentary now and then. There's not a chance you'd know the results from actually watching the competition, since most of them are aired at least a week after they take place, if at all. This fall, the first major international competition of the season, won by Michelle Kwan (filling in at the last minute for injured Olympic champion Sarah Hughes), was preempted in the Washington, D.C., area for a showing of Disney's
