Kurt Browning started skating at three years old when his Dad made an outdoor "skating rink" by flooding the ground with a hose and letting it freeze. The Caroline Arena was built when Kurt was 6 years old...that's when he made his figure skating debut...in a skunk costume! :) Kurt really intended on being a hockey player, and he started figure skating as a way to get more ice time. Lucky for us! He went on to become a four time Canadian Champion and four time World Champion. Other highlights of Kurt Browning's amateur career include being a three time Canadian Olympic Team Member, and Kurt was the first person to land a quadruple jump (toe loop) in competition (1988 Worlds, Budapest, Hungary). He was also the first to land a triple salchow-triple loop combination in competition (1990 Nations Cup, Germany), and the first to land three triple-triple jump combinations in a freeskate program: triple axel-triple toe loop, triple flip-triple toe, triple salchow-triple loop (1991 Worlds, Munich, Germany). Kurt Browning retired from amateur competition after the 1994 Winter Olympics, and has enjoyed a very successful professional career. He has gone on to tour with

An Interview with Kurt Browning
by Tina Tyan and Debi Oreste For the past two years, Kurt Browning's Gotta Skate has brought a unique twist to the traditional skating show, blending dance, live music, and skating in fun and creative ways. It has also provided an opportunity for Kurt to combine his talents with those of his wife, National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Sonia Rodriguez. This year Kurt and Sonia proudly created their greatest production yet, their new son Gabriel Browning Rodriguez. This big change in their lives was reflected in the third installment of Gotta Skate. For the first time, Sonia didn't dance in the show. In fact, there was no dance at all. Instead, Kurt, who's executive producer and creative director, as well as headline skater, took the show in an entirely new creative direction, building it around an interesting central theme with the skaters playing characters.

GOING FOR FOUR
The quad ranks among Canada's major achievements in pushing athletic boundaries
By James Deacon
At his Toronto home, 16 years after the fact, Kurt Browning is happily accommodating a request to recall the Jump. At the 1988 World Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, early into his long program, Browning, then 21 and cocky as all get out, sprung high into the air, spun four times, and landed firmly on the outside edge of his right skate. He was angry with himself for spinning out a little on the landing, but he did hold the edge and, around the rink, fans who'd just witnessed history in the making erupted in applause.
U.S. star Brian Boitano, Canada's Brian Orser and the Soviet Union's Viktor Petrenko would finish one-two-three on the podium that night, but it was the kid from Caroline, Alta., back in sixth place, who is best remembered. Browning's toe loop was the first quad ever landed in competition, and it changed men's figure skating forever. Nowadays a man couldn't win a major event without a quad in his repertoire.
Canadians have always pushed athletic boundaries. The late Moe Norman won dozens of tournaments in his day, but it was his self-made golf swing that produced what many regard as the purest ball striking ever seen in the game. Jim Hunter, Dave Irwin, Dave Murray, Steve Podborski and Ken Read gave the world a new euphemism for lunatics who take the shortest, most death-defying route down a ski hill: Crazy Canucks. And in figure skating, Barbara Ann Scott, Petra Burka, Don Jackson and Vern Taylor were all first to land various jumps that raised the bar for everyone who followed. Likewise, Elvis Stojko threw down the gauntlet with his precedent-setting combination jumpsthe first quadruple/double toe loop, in 1991, and his flawless first quad-triple at a Grand Prix event in Hamilton, in 1997.

By Kelli J. Hewson An up-tempo selection of swing music began the skating portion of the show. This ensemble number had the ladies in pastel colored, polka dotted dresses and the men mostly in grey pants with suspenders, white shirts with black ties and some very stylish hats. The opening was fast paced with a lot of quick footwork and segued into Jen Robinson’s tango performance. Judging from the required elements, Jen’s tango appears to be one of her competitive routines for the upcoming season. She had some trouble with her jumps but she did display a nice spiral and a beautiful layback spin. Adding a little live music to the club created an authentic feel. Following Jen’s performance David Foster introduced the evening’s musical guest, Canadian recording artist Michael Buble. Michael’s Sinatra like sound complemented the smoky nightclub atmosphere. Shae-Lynn and Victor danced the night away as Michael sang “Sway”. The couple, who made history becoming the first North American team to win a world title in ice dance, moved so naturally with one another that they were a sheer joy to watch. Shae always manages to capture such emotion in her facial expressions. Their moves were so flowing and graceful that you wished the performance did not have to end. Next up Todd put aside his role as bouncer to deliver an intense performance to “Transitions”, a piece of music with a very classical sound. Todd’s choice of music was very fitting to his dramatic style. His jumps were solid but the highlights of this performance were his spins. His scratch spin was centered and fast and without a doubt the best of the night.
