Plushenko will not be skating for points here, whereas this is a point scoring event for Goebel and Jeannette. In each discipline, $30,000 will be awarded for first place, $18,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place. Skaters placed 4th and 5th, will also be awarded $5 000 and $3,000 respectively. Additionally, Skaters in the Men's, Ladies and Dance events collect up to 12 points for first place, scoring down to 1 point for those coming in 8th. Petrenko Charged With DUI 1992 Olympic men's champion Victor Petrenko has been charged with drunken driving, following a car crash Wednesday night in Connecticut. Petrenko told police that he had one glass of wine, but he failed several field sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test. Internet Triple Challenge 1999-2000 Monday, 10/27/97 Detroit, Michigan (actually, we're Reported by Deb Walsh, with memory-jogging by Fran Buhman It's a little weird to have to go back and recreate the events of Saturday, October 25, after all that's happened. So please bear with us while we try. The day started off normally enough. We arrived at the Men's Group B practice in plenty of time, and the men filtered out onto the ice. Zagorodniuk, Abt and Plushenko were all wearing their long program costumes, while Davis, Denommee and Eldredge were in normal practice clothes. Since this was a competition day (the Men's Final), we really didn't expect to see complete runthroughs, big jumps, or anything that was really going to tire the athletes before the competition itself. Evgeny Plushenko of Russia was the first to perform his runthrough, and he basically just blocked his program, a disco-ish number with a lot of energy.He did not perform any jumps during the course of the runthrough, but sketched out where they would be. His costume was a futuristic silver and black. Todd came next, and he spent his runthrough just sort of skating around, not looking terribly happy. This was unusual for Todd, even on a competition day - normally, he'd block out the routine, probably land a couple of the jumps, perhaps doubling triples to conserve energy. Home Reports Part I Part II Magic and Skating: A Russian Ice Show Part I By Vera Alexandrova NPLana It was a much anticipated show, since it was announced that three times World Champion Evgeni Plushenko would appear on the ice, the first time since his injury and withdrawal from 2005 World Championship in Moscow. Plushenko, an absolute favourite of the St. Petersburg audience, and his coach Alexei Mishin had promised to choreograph two quite special programs especially for this event. They kept their promise and justified all the expectations. Actually, this year there were two shows, on June 2nd and 3rd. As those were special events and not a part of a tour, there were no group entries, however the organizers tried to think of something that could make the skating show look more unusual. As a result, the show combined skating with magic tricks, although it was questionably if that was a good idea. The June 2nd show was more 'official', with many VIP guests (including St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko and The President of Russian Figure Skating Federation Mr. Piseev) who delivered speeches and presented awards to skaters, live singers (Nikolai Baskov and Zara) and some entertaining entries, like

THE RUSSIAN TEAM On February 8 Salt-Lake City, the Untied States, will host the solemn opening ceremony of the 19th Winter Olympics. The Olympic flame brought from Athens will be burning for 17 days. Competitions will start with ski jumping trials on February 8, followed by the men’s 30-km cross-country ski run on February 9. The Russian team numbers more than 160 athletes who will compete in all 15 Olympic sports. Russia hopes to win a total of 8-9 golds, 6-7 silvers and 8 bronzes. Great hopes are being pinned on skiers, biathlon racers and figure skaters. Russian speed skaters and hockey players also have good chances for success. On July 29, the International Olympic Committee announced the seven bid cities. That was a shock to the Canadians who were the clear favorite. Unless a candidate gets a clear majority, the International Olympic Committee conducts a series of votes during which the country with the lowest support is eliminated. As the process continued, Vancouver gained strength. The city won the right to stage the Games but only by the small margin of 3 votes over PyeongChang. Salzburg finished third. This time the Koreans were the first to submit their bid to the IOC. Information about their bid may be seen on their excellent website www.pyeongchang2014.org. Should they win, the figure skating will take place in a new 10,000 seat stadium in Gangneung. One of the practice rinks will be underground.

Yagudin, skating second in the final group, opened his program by landing a quad toe-triple toe-double toe combination, followed closely by a quad toe. Skating to the "Iron Mask", Yagudin landed a total of two quads and six triples to successfully reclaim the title he lost one year ago in Vancouver to compatriot Evgeny Plushenko. For his effort, Yagudin was awarded two 6.0s for presentation and marks of 5.8-5.9 for technical merit. If the playful Yagudin has another such performance in him, he'll skate away with an Olympic gold medal. Of course, Japan's Takeshi Honda and American Tim Goebel might have other ideas for the long program after finishing behind Yagudin, who swept the judging panel. Plushenko was fortunate to wind up fourth Tuesday night after messing up his quadruple toe loop. For now, the three-time world champion clearly is in charge, and the current world champion needs help. "I am really happy with the work I have done today," Yagudin said, "and I am really concentrating on myself. If you have any questions about him, just ask him."
