Surgery to sideline Yzerman
DETROIT Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman will have surgery on his right knee next month and will miss at least the first two months of the season. Yzerman, 37, who led the team in scoring in the playoffs, will have the bones in the knee realigned to reduce pressure, the team said. PENGUINS: Defenseman Marc Bergevin signed. PREDATORS: Defenseman Cale Hulse re-signed. RANGERS: Defenseman Vladimir Chebaturkin signed. THRASHERS: Forwards Pascal Rheaume and Brad Tapper and defenseman Mike Weaver re-signed. TRADE: Florida got Dmitry Yushkevich from Toronto for Robert Svehla. Svehla, who had announced his retirement after last season, signed a one-year contract.

Boston's offense keeps streak alive
November 27, 2002 BOSTON The Bruins' top line has been without Sergei Samsonov nearly all season, but there has been no shortage of production. Glen Murray scored his fourth career hat trick, Brian Rolston scored twice and John Grahame stopped 29 shots Tuesday as streaking Boston defeated Calgary 7-2. The Bruins won their third straight and seventh in a row at home. Boston is 8-1-1-0 at the FleetCenter this season. The Flames lost for the seventh time in eight games. The last time Murray scored three goals in a game was in last season's finale, a 7-1 home win against Pittsburgh. "Glen Murray's had a few of those games this year, but they happened to go in for him tonight," Boston coach Robbie Ftorek said. "He's had plenty of chances and it paid off for him."

    Storm ready to do damage
    I
t is my pleasure to announce that the Guelph Storm will be celebrating its 15th year in the Ontario Hockey League and we are ready to crank up another season of exciting hockey!
One season removed from an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup birth, the 2004-05 team was in a retooling mode. The squad made some amazing strides and shocked many teams in the league with their competitiveness and never-say-die attitude.
Head coach and general manager Dave Barr’s player acquisitions look to have made an immediate impact on the Storm’s goal of winning another league championship. During the season, the team stuck together and was involved in some of the OHL and CHL’s brightest moments. The Storm shocked the nation in finishing with a 0-0 tie against the CHL’s number one ranked London Knights, in the game that broke the CHL record for most consecutive games without a loss.
Later, the Storm and newly acquired players from London, Ryan MacDonald, Ryan Pottruff and Rick Steadman managed to hand the Knights one of their only seven losses all season in a 2-1 home victory.
Guelph is currently in the process of reloading and our exciting lineup should soon rank among the OHL's elite. The club recently added former Guelph Plater and NHL player Todd Hlushko as an assistant coach. During the 1989-90 OHL season, Hlushko played alongside Storm assistant coach Trent Cull and goaltending coach Mike Parson. We are confident that Storm fans will continue to have a team you can be proud of for years to come, both on and off the ice.

Long-time followers of the Leafs have never been shy about offering their suggestions to find the apparent missing ingredient to bring a Stanley Cup championship to Toronto, and yours truly is no exception. The unprecedented crop of big-name free agents this summer has given more fodder to armchair critics alike as the signal-to-noise ratio in the city decreases accordingly. Glen Murray, Eric Lindros, Pavol Demitra, Ziggy Palffy, and Brendan Shanahan are all available to the highest bidder. All of these players and many more have been suggested to be the saviour that brings the Leafs one step closer to hockey's Holy Grail, and that's just in the past minute, while you have been reading this paragraph. While it's understandable that the big name all-stars available in today's NHL market command all the attention, perhaps the solution to maximizing the Leafs' chances of success lies in a slightly altered approach. Yours truly offers the following unsolicited two-step suggestion.

Columnists Cook: Words fail to do Lemieux justice Thursday, December 28, 2000 Craig Patrick apologized, but it really wasn't necessary. The man makes his living in hockey, not with words. "I'm not sure I can describe what we just watched." Patrick shouldn't feel bad. I'm not sure I can, either. "Quite frankly, all of this is inexplicable. ... Inexplicable? Is that the right word?" Patrick asked. That will work. There really is no explanation for how Mario Lemieux can come back to hockey after a 3 1/2-year layoff and, in his first game, get a goal and two assists to lead the Penguins to a 5-0 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Let me pause here for my own word to describe what took place on the Mellon Arena ice last night. How about otherworldly?
