Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster Kalamazoo, MI - The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce the start of their 2004-05 Training Camp. The K-Wings have invited 29 players to this year's camp, which begins this Sunday when players report for physicals. A 10-0 victory will tend to put a grin on your face. But this was before the game.
Surrounded by German hockey players, Julie Chu of the U.S. team scores one of her two goals during the Americans' 10-0 victory.
Michael Brandy, Deseret News
"We're at the Olympics. I don't think there's anything to frown about," said Chu, a 19-year-old New Englander who scored a goal and assisted on another as the Americans opened Olympic play Tuesday with a spirited but easy win over Germany. "This is the greatest experience of my life."
Ditto for Natalie Darwitz, the 18-year-old who made her first U.S. national team at the age of 15. She scored her first Olympic goal Tuesday to give the U.S. a 3-0 second-period lead and then followed five minutes later as one of two the Americans scored on the power play.
"It's quite an amazing experience, seeing all the (American) flags out there," said Darwitz, a spunky Minnesotan who is the daughter of a hockey coach and grew up playing on boys' teams. The other teenager, 16-year-old New Yorker Lyndsay Wall, didn't get on the scoreboard Tuesday but did mix it up a little, engaging in a shoving match with a German player but staying out of the penalty box. Wall, the youngest on the 20-player roster, was teamed on defense with Angela Ruggiero, who was the youngest player on the '98 Olympic squad at 18.

Deseret News staff writer When America won the first Olympic gold medal in women's ice hockey four years ago, New Yorker Lyndsay Wall was just 12 years old.
Natalie Darwitz was 14, playing on her varsity girls' high school team as an eighth-grader and on her way to winning the Minnesota Player of the Year award.

And Krissy Wendell was a 16-year-old high school sophomore and hockey phenom who watched the Olympic tournament on TV but had difficulty believing that could be her some day.
Next month, "some day" will arrive for Wall, Darwitz, Chu and Wendell. All four girls have grown into young women and blossomed into some of the best hockey players in the world. They are the youngest members of Team USA and four of just six women on the 20-player roster who are not veterans of the '98 Olympic squad. But U.S. Coach Ben Smith stresses that playing on the Olympic team "isn't a tryout session." All four will wear the USA jersey in Salt Lake, he said, because they've earned it, deserve it and most importantly can help the team reclaim the gold medal.

Peacock students rock and roll on new hockey rink By Jeff R. The School District recently built a hockey rink behind Peacock. Since then, many kids go there after school to compete or just have fun. Jason, a sixth grader, goes to the rink very often and enjoys it. Seventh grader, Mike M. also commented that he uses the rink a lot, along with his friends. According to Mike, he and friends like the new rink because kids used to have to play hockey in the tennis courts and it was crowded. Now, however, they have a real rink, although some kids still play at the courts. Mike and his friends suggested that the installation of lights for a night game would be a good idea, but they still like the games as they are now. Groups of kids have formed teams, some with...interesting names. If you are interested in playing, just meet up with someone there after school on a nice day. Iain McCletchie, The Martlet (UVIC) Mario "Le Magnifique" Lemieux has returned to hockey. Oh yeah. Let the games begin. Forget all the implications this brings regarding Lemieux being an owner and whether he will be able to vote as a member of the NHL Players Association. Forget about whether he returned in order to raise the value of the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise, or if he returned in order to keep Jaromir Jagr happy. Forget about how he'll pay himself, and forget about his age. This is Mario Lemieux, arguably the most physically talented player ever to lace up a pair of skates. For the 12 seasons he played NHL hockey , Lemieux was skill and grace personified. And when he retired in 1997 (as prematurely as a 14-year-old boy), he took along with him his third Art Ross trophy as the league's scoring champion. His best season was 1988-89, when he scored 199 points in 76 contests-2.62 points per game! Lemieux played with Dan Quinn and Wendell Young that year, two of the biggest nobodies in the Wales Conference. If Mario had been given some talent on his wings instead of a carrot and two sticks of celery, he would have shattered all of Gretzky's season records. This is the guy who scored while flat on his back against the old Minnesota North Stars. This is the guy who went shelf on the Soviets to win the 1987 Canada Cup, arguably the last great moment in Canadian hockey. This is the guy who won the Art Ross after being treated for Hodgkin's Disease (lymphatic cancer) and a bollixed back.

As a 12-year-old catcher for American Little League from Brooklyn Park, Minn., Ms. Wendell showed an elite level of sportsmanship and competitiveness that would help her team reach Williamsport in 1994, and in the years to come, lead her to the Olympics.
The Central Region champions, coached by Larry Wendell, finished 1-2 in the World Series and that would be the last baseball Ms. Wendell would play as she turned her athletic ambitions toward ice hockey. After graduating from Center Park High School in 2000, where she was a member of the Minnesota state championship hockey team, Ms. Wendell enrolled at the University of Minnesota.

FRANK PIETRANGELO – NETMINDER TURNS PLAYER AGENT
    by Rob Zaremberg
In sports there are players who might not get the bulk of the playing time, but when they compete in a big game they become known for making a particular play that contributes to their team’s success in the long run. Former Pittsburgh Penguins backup goaltender Frank Pietrangelo did just that with a save he made in the 1991 playoffs and recalls it to this day. “It has been synonymous with my name in Pittsburgh,” Pietrangelo said. “I was fortunate. It was meant to be.” He still watches ‘The Save’ he made more than 13 years ago, which was on FSN Pittsburgh’s Penguins Classic TV on Nov. 29. The Penguins were down by a game in the New Jersey series after losing Game 5 and were on the verge of being knocked out of the first round of the 1991 playoffs. They were without injured starting goalie Tom Barrasso, and the backup stepped up between the pipes. Pietrangelo, who played for the Penguins from 1987-92 and is now a hockey player agent, made a miraculous reaching glove save on New Jersey forward Peter Stastny. The Penguins went on to win the game and the series buoyed by Pietrangelo's heroics. “It was one of those saves a goalie makes that gives your bench and team a little bump,” said Rick Kehoe, an assistant coach on the ’91 team and a current Pens scout. “I think everyone thought when it went off of Stastny’s stick that it would go in the net.”
