USCHO.com Fan Forum College Hockey Women's College Hockey PDA View Full Version : You heard it first right here!! sevenpucks 09-14-2004, 06:44 AM News from in and around the city of Mankato. The South St. Paul trio was in town for thier visits this past weekend, and as of yesterday afternoon they had officially verballed to come and play for the Mavericks next season. So it will be nice to add Fisher, Nelson, and Young to an already young team for next year. Say what you want but the Mavs are getting it done in the recruting field. It says a lot about their program, all the way from the players to the coaches. This is a huge verbal for the Mavericks. Its going to be so nice seeing them wear purple instead of that maroon that everyone in the state thought they would be wearing. That Maroon team isnt gettting all the best kids in the state anymore and I think its great for the WCHA and the rest of Womens Hockey. GO MAVS ARM 09-14-2004, 08:39 AM You might be right that Mankato will get all three, but just to quibble a bit, there isn't such a thing as an "official verbal". This year's crop of seniors is hard to rank, and how one orders them might depend on what attributes one favors (size/speed/hands/awareness/etc). It will be interesting to see who emerges from the pack as Ms. Hockey in the state.

Vancouver head coach Marc Crawford led the Colorado Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in 1996 and won two Memorial Cups as a player. Crawford captained Memorial Cup winner
    Oct. 4, 2004
Vancouver Canucks coach Marc Crawford played six seasons with the Canucks, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1982. He coached the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche from 1994-98, winning the 1995 Jack Adams Award and the 1996 Stanley Cup. Crawford was named coach of the Canucks in 1998 and is now their all-time winningest coach. With a nice blend of talented veterans, hot young prospects and younger veterans coming into their own, the Canucks are poised to make a serious run at the Stanley Cup. A native of Belleville, Ontario, Crawford was the head coach for Team Canada in the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, and he was an assistant coach with Canada's silver medal-winning team in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Tarasov's Vancouver 'Vacation' Most everyone here thought the grandfather of Soviet hockey, Anatoly Tarasov, was over here to sample the cuisine and have a vacation away from mother Russia.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Upon meeting Canadian senator Ray Perrault at a snowy Mirabel airport in Montreal, the 68 year old man, who still considers himself a coach, began work on the Vancouver Canucks.
Peppering Perrault with questions, he arrived late Friday, Jan. 30, in Vancouver and ordered that tapes of the Canucks' most recent losses be at his hotel room with the appropriate video equipment at 7 am the following day.
"I came here to work, not to take a vacation," he said through an interpreter. "I will reserve judgement on the players until I have seen them play and practice for a few more days. But then we will talk about them.
Tarasov watched his first practice that Saturday morning, a day on which goaltender Richard Brodeur had to leave to see his ailing father. That meant the Canucks called in Wendell Young from Fredericton, but because he wasn't expected to begin the work out, they used a local dentist named Kenny Walters to play goal opposite Frank Caprice.
During the practice, coach Tom Watt called the players over for a chat by the penalty box but Walters didn't bother skating over, feeling he would be prying.

She broke boundaries with Lightning stint
By JAY CRIDLIN published September 15, 2002 Jan. 19, 2002: Pascal Rheaume, a forward for the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, set career highs and franchise records with four goals and five points in a single game against the Florida Panthers. That night, the spotlight had finally fallen on another member of the Rheaume family. And no one was happier than Pascal's older sister. "I got a message on my phone about the game," said Manon Rheaume, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "I was so excited, I couldn't go to bed." There was a time when Manon was the focus of the media's attention. Her name was scrawled into the history books on Sept. 23, 1992, when she stepped on the ice to play goalie for the Lightning in a preseason game, becoming the first and only woman to play in a major men's sports league. The decade that has passed since Rheaume's debut has brought an explosion of women's sports: professional leagues in women's basketball and soccer, and women's softball and ice hockey have become Olympic events.
