The Shoot For A Cure Hockey campaign has been extremely successful in raising awareness about spinal cord injuries in hockey through the Play It Cool program. It has also raised a significant amount of funds for spinal cord injury research. This success could not have been possible without the support of the hockey community, and the following players, in particular: Brad May
Chairman "Hockey is such a fast game that I think we sometimes forget how easily a spinal cord injury could occur in our game. That's why it's so easy for all of us to get involved with Shoot For A Cure."
Brian Savage
Vice Chairman "Being part of SFAC is something I would have wanted to be part of regardless of what happened. But I know I can appreciate their message a lot more after what I went through." Jarome Iginla
Spokesperson
"We know that it's a great program; that we would love to see a cure for spinal cord injury and as a hockey player, we know things can change any day not just a hockey player, but for anybody, things can change any day and how fortunate we are to be playing this game. I think it's a great program."

The old man still inspires on court
By Woody Paige

Denver Post Staff Columnist

Flushing, N.Y. - Like Santiago, the Cuban fishing relic, he is worn and tired and hurting, and he has drawn up against many obstacles since he was 15, and there are not many more adventures outstanding. His face possesses the lines and his body the signs of aging, but his mind, his eyes and his game are forever young. Andre Agassi is the old man of the courts. For the second time in 60 hours Agassi willed his way through five anguishing sets and past a stubborn, spirited youth bent on ending his unlikely run in New York and his improbable career everywhere. The 35-year-old ex-rebel with a cause has become the oldest man in 31 years to reach the final of the United States Open. "I don't know how I'm going out," Agassi said Saturday evening. How about a happy ending? We need a feel-good story now, and Agassi is that.

Playing solitaire: Sakic last one left
By Woody Paige

Denver Post Staff Columnist

I lived to see the last warrior of the wise race of the Mohicans. Joe Sakic is the last of the Avalanche. Solo Joe. All the others from the first year in Denver, that championship season, 10 years and one lost season ago, 1995-96, are gone now. Quebec is ancient history. "After what happened, I thought about all the guys I played with on the Nordiques and the Avalanche, and it's hard for me to believe I'm the only one left from the old days when we used to go to the rink in Quebec," Sakic said Friday. Patrick Roy, Uwe Krupp, Valeri Kamensky, Claude Lemieux, Chris Drury, Stephane Yelle, Adam Deadmarsh et al. and, finally, Adam Foote and Peter Forsberg. All gone.

Buffalo Sabres' center Jochen Hecht is among the NHL veteran's on Germany's 26-man roster. Kolzig, Hecht named to German World Cup team
As if one "Olie the goalie" isn't hard enough to beat, the German team in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey will have two, Washington Capitals netminder Olaf Kolzig, the 2000 Vezina Trophy winner, and Oliver Jonas, a standout performer at Harvard University who was named to the 1999 ECAC All-Rookie team in his sophomore season and won the 2001 Ken Dryden Award as the ECAC's First All-Star team goaltender. Kolzig, Jonas and Buffalo Sabres center Jochen Hecht are among 26 players named to the German World Cup team. San Jose Sharks forwards Marco Sturm and Christian Ehrhoff were also named along with NHL defensive prospects Dennis Seidenberg of the Philadelphia Flyers and Christoph Schubert of the Ottawa Senators. Related Links Forward Marcel Goc, who spent the regular season with the AHL Cleveland Barons and was added to the Sharks' Stanley Cup Playoff roster, was also named, as was his older brother, Sascha, a former New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman now playing with the Mannheim Eagles of the German Elite League. The German team will also include the brother of another veteran NHL player, Martin Reichel, whose brother, Robert, played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003-04. The brothers were born in Litvinov, Czech Republic, and Robert Reichel was a member of the Czech's 1998 Olympic gold-medal team. Martin Reichel has played in Germany for over a decade.

    TAMPA -
It seemed right and proper that Wayne Gretzky was in the house. The greatest player in hockey history added his eyes to the 22,221 other pairs watching Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals. The Vinny Game. Surely No. 99 saw No. 4 in the Lightning jersey. Surely The Great One had perfected enough experiments in his sinister hockey laboratory to appreciate a boy genius. Gretzky, also the greatest playmaker from behind the net in history, must have smiled when he saw The Play - the one that defined a night when the Lightning jumped into these finals with both skates. Maybe the Wayner even had a flashback. That was the type of genius Vincent Lecavalier displayed in the first period Thursday, seven minutes into a game the Bolts had to have. It was the play everyone went home talking about, the type most kids don't even try in street hockey. Lecavalier was behind the Calgary net with Stephane Yelle on his tail. Vinny paused. A lightbulb went on. He threw the puck against the back of the goal. Yelle went by. Vinny whirled the other way with the puck. He set up linemate Ruslan Fedotenko for the first goal of a 4-1 win. Mr. Yelle: your jockstrap may be picked up at the Forum lost and found.

    MARTIN FENNELLY

TAMPA - Who says no one is watching the Stanley Cup finals? So far, the Lightning are. OK, they didn't watch all of Game 1 with the Calgary Flames, but they stood around enough to squeeze the juice from a historic night. Where'd the party go? Maybe some eyeballs were too big, some hearts raced too fast, some brains thought too much. Not to say the result was ugly, dreary, sobering, but honorary shirt-ripper-offer Hulk Hogan left before the third period. By then, Calgary led 3-0. The Lightning added small amounts of pep, but it made no real difference in a dreary 4-1 flameout. This wasn't the Lightning we've known most of this postseason. The team that started with a bang in its previous three playoff series was all whimpers Tuesday. The team that made simple hockey winning hockey tried to be too fine. The power play that dominated the Flyers gave up a short-handed goal. The team that made it here forgot how it got here. There were bad passes, bad ideas and a general lack of grinding. Bad hockey. Plus brain cramps. This time of year, it doesn't take much to lose. The Lightning had plenty. ""I don't think we came out ready to win,'' defenseman Dan Boyle said.

Wrenched Knees, Broken Bones, Cracked Heads: NHL Injury Parade Continues
As spring approaches, NHL fans feverishly pursue the latest trade rumors, looking for the deal that could make the difference in another tight race for the Stanley Cup. But this season is just as likely to turn on the more mundane business of who can stay healthy. In the past week, injuries have taken down a handful of NHL All Stars. Last night, the league's leading scorer joined them. The captain of the Vancouver Canucks, Markus Naslund, did not return to the game after taking a shoulder to the face from Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche. Naslund is expected to miss one week with "concussion-like symptoms.'' The incident left Vancouver coach Marc Crawford spitting mad . It also revives the debate over whether the NHL should outlaw all blows to the head, regardless of whether they fit the current definition of a “clean hit.”
