Black Hockey Players in the NHL
by MICHAEL MORRISON February 3, 2000 When Anson Carter was ten years old, his life was much the same as most of the other boys growing up in his Scarborough, Ontario, neighborhood. He went to school, came home, and played hockey. As he continued to play, advancing rapidly through his local leagues and on to Michigan State University, he began to stand out for two reasons. One, he was almost always the best player on the ice, and two, he was black—a rarity in hockey.
Carter, 25, is currently one of the most promising young forwards in the National Hockey League. He was the second-leading scorer for the Boston Bruins in 1999-2000, and is one of 19 black athletes now playing in the NHL. It's a number that may seem low, given the 650 players in the NHL today, but it still represents a noticeable increase in what has always been thought of as a "white" sport. According to league reports, only 18 black players reached the NHL between 1958 and 1991. While racism certainly played some role in keeping the figure to a minimum, it may have been more a function of the demographic makeup of Canada. In 1971, Canadians made up over 95% of the NHL, and only .02% of all Canadians were black. Today, the black population in Canada has increased to 2%. In addition, the United States, with a much higher black population than Canada, now contributes approximately 15% of all NHL players while Canada produces just over 60%.

PRESS RELEASES
Alumnus of the Week - Presented by Liberty Mutual Jeff Serowik - by Greg Greenhalgh
Professional Hockey Players Association
June 13, 2003 Could you please bring us up-to-date on what you've been doing?
I have been retired now going on my 4th year. I am married and have 3 beautiful children, two girls and a boy. I own and operate Pro Ambitions Hockey Camps, Inc (www.proambitions.com.) I have over 75 camps and clinics in the US and have 3000 kids pass through my program per year. Our camps have been chosen by Platinum TV to do a weekly show called "Building a Solid Foundation for Youths" airing on ESPN, ESPN2 and TSN in Feb. 04. I also direct a 10 team select hockey program (Mite-Midget) called Nashua Pro Ambitions Selects.
Currently, we are working hard on my charity/Celebrity Golf tourney held this coming August. My charity, which I developed last year, is called "Sports Saves Souls" This gives kids either from the inner city or with unfortunate circumstances an opportunity to attend a camp of their choice, inclusive of Gymnastics, Golf, basketball, baseball, tennis, horeseback etc. We will have many NHLers and Boston Sports Celebrities on hand to hack up the golf course. Any players interested in playing please contact me off my website.
Eleven years ago you founded the Pro Ambitions Hockey Camps. What inspired you to do this? Especially at such a young age?

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Daneyko not ready to retire One certainly gets the feeling Kenny Daneyko is not ready or willing to have his No. 3 retired to the Continental Airlines Arena rafters just yet, or anytime soon. Reduced to a part-time role on a team that struggled mightily during the first couple of months of this past season, the New Jersey Devils defenseman disputed claims his performance has slipped. "I'm no different than I was last June when I was one of the guys in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In five or six months you don't lose your position as a go-to guy," said the 37-year-old after sitting out three of four games as a healthy scratch. "For my role and what I do, it's going to take a lot longer (for his game to significantly deteriorate). It's too short of a time. I believe I have two more years left in me after this one. In fact, I know it. I'm not injured and I'm not banged up." Daneyko has one more season remaining on his contract, but there was increased speculation that he might not end his career with the Devils, the team for which he has played his entire NHL career. "There is nothing to read into this, other than the six defensemen we have played well," said GM Lou Lamoriello. "No question, when push comes to shove, Kenny will be a very valuable person."

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach
Andreychuk not done yet
Discreetly, but not silently, the New Jersey Devils wondered whether Dave Andreychuk was finished. As he struggled all of 1997-1998, it was suggested the 500-goal scorer had lost his scoring touch. But if Devils' coach Robbie Ftorek's looser reins have proved anything this current season, it is that Andreychuk does still have it. After scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers before Christmas, Andreychuk actually shared the team lead in goals with Petr Sykora. "He's doing the things he has always done well," Ftorek said. Even more impressive was the fact Andreychuk, 35, was in double figures in goals (he finished the recently concluded 1998-1999 regular season with 15 goals), despite missing several games with a bruised sternum following a hit from Florida Panthers' forward Peter Worrell and assorted other physical ailments later on. "I don't know who was concerned. I wasn't concerned," Andreychuk said. "It was a while before I felt back to normal. My first week back I didn't play great, but then I felt pretty good. Before that, I couldn't do too much. I feel more confident." At the time, some three months into this season, Andreychuk was being mentioned among the top candidates for the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance. He basically played in some degree of pain all season long.

Yes, but he is the financial foundation of several pharmaceutical companies. Look how quickly we can turn a thread about the status of a hockey player, into a discussion of Rush Limbaugh's addiction. It's not hard to get off topic. It's all good humor though.

Sportsrant Community National Hockey League NHL Rants View Full Version : Worrell activated from the IR MasterM Steve Moore Reassigned to Hershey; Peter Worrell Activated from Injured Reserve
Forward Steve Moore has been reassigned to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears.
Moore has collected two assists and 16 penalty minutes in 18 games with the Avalanche in 2003-04 over the span of three separate recalls. He recorded his first career NHL point (assist) and multiple-point effort (2a) November 20 versus the New York Rangers.
Left wing Peter Worrell was activated from Injured Reserve on Monday, December 8, having missed the first 27 games of the season due to a knee injury.
http://www.coloradoavalanche.com/news/currentdetails.asp?ID=88 On behalf of Avs fans everywhere.....IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME!! On second thought....Big Fucking Deal!!!
What has he done? Taken a bunch of stupid penalties? We knew that was part of the package, but where is the rest of it? Isn't he an enforcer? I thought they fought from time to time? Did the rules change?
He had a shot on goal the other night, actually it was a shot NEAR the goal. Why is he shooting? He should be rubbing out irritants. The trash talk and smirk thing is kind of neat, at first, but if I could send a message to this really big bastard that could crush me, I'd say "Hey Peter, quit trying to play hockey, shut your fucking mouth, and beat the shit out of someone!!!!"

Tammy Lee Shewchuk
The 23-year-old forward is one of four newcomers on a Canadian women's roster that is getting tougher and tougher to crack with each passing year. "I'm a four-year overnight success you could say," Shewchuk said yesterday after the women's team's first on-ice session at a Sarnia training camp. "It's been a long time in the making. It's been a long hard road, but I am just so excited." The native of Saint-Laurent, Que., felt like quitting in 1998 when she was a late cut for the team that won a silver medal at the Olympics.
