MacInnis A Class Act
By Larry Wigge
It seems like only yesterday when I saw Al MacInnis playing live for the first time. Instead, it was way back on January 17, 1984 at The St. Louis Arena.
It was at that point that MacInnis wound up and blasted a high shot toward Blues goaltender Mike Liut from just outside the blue line. The puck was like a rocket, hitting Liut in the mask with a loud thud. As Liut crumbled in a heap on the ice, temporarily unconscious, the puck continued into the net. The drama of that shot and goal made all of the highlight shows on television for months.

Game Day Live Scoreboard News ... Contact Us World Cup of Hockey Will Provide Puckheads One Last Hockey Fix
By George Csolak For those of us who can't get enough cold steel on ice, the World Cup of Hockey is here. All of the labor-related gloom and doom that has permeated our sport for the past few months has been set aside as one of sport's truly great showcases gets underway. Center Doug Weight, representing the Blues, remembered back to 1996 and the last World Cup, when his Team USA defeated Team Canada in a superb exhibition that overshadowed the Winter Olympics of 1998 and 2002. "I've never played hockey like that," said Weight, who played for all three teams. "I could do it every year."

Doug Weight—Stars and Stripes In The Great White North No American hockey player was as warmly adored by the city’s residents as former Oilers’ captain Doug Weight. In seven of the eight full seasons he spent with the Oilers, Weight led the team in scoring. In 1995-96, he registered a 104-point season, making him the last Oiler to break the 100-point barrier. Weight would go on to register 577 points in 588 games as an Oiler. He was the team’s top playmaker of the 1990, producing 420 assists of his 577 points. Weight also has the ability to raise his teammates’ level of play with his precise passing and smart puck distribution. NHL players also know him as a fiery competitor, who would always be the first to talk to the media after tough losses or hard-earned wins. "You have to get to the point where you are complimenting your linemates’ style of play," said Weight. "As a player, you have to know where you are going to be on the ice in certain situations and what are the strong points of each others’ games. It’s a matter of knowing what kind of styles your linemates play, and being able to utilize those styles to the fullest."

Even though players are on the ice for an average of one minute at a time, the workout is one of the most intense in professional sports.
The demands of the game of hockey, along with an 82-game schedule, take their toll physically and mentally on the players. How do players stay fit and focused during the season? How do they protect themselves from injuries? We talked to the Sharks team doctor, conditioning coach, and the players themselves. We looked at getting fit and staying that way through the season.
In this section, there are RealAudio and video clips from Sharks Team Doctor Arthur Ting, Strength and Conditioning Coach Steve Millard, and Sharks Defenseman, Doug Bodger
Holding your breath Most of the players work hard in the summer. Long gone are the days when a professional hockey player could just take the summer off. Weights, bicycles, running, inline skating players do whatever it takes in the off-season to stay fit. Sharks Defenseman Doug Bodger told us that while they work hard all summer, the demands of the game itself are more intense and it takes a while for everyone to get to point to where they feel comfortable physically. So just how intense is it on the ice? Bodger told us, "I don't think you're breathing half the time. You're mostly exhaling...pushing and shoving...and concentrating so much you don't think about breathing at all. That's why we can only stay out there for a minute at a time. It's like holding your breath."
