In Conversation With Hockey Expert Cecil Harris
Few know that the first black NHL player, Willie O'Ree, played with only one eye. Even fewer know that the first hockey school in North America was created by a black gentleman named Herb Carnegie. Both these men were Canadian as well. Blacks have made great contributions to the sport. Catch da Flava commissioned Jahinder Dhoot to interview Cecil Harris, who wrote the book: "Breaking the Ice: The Black Experience in Hockey." He is the leading authority on the subject. Both young and old, athletic and non-athletic, black and non-black can enjoy this. da Flava: There were numerous struggles that black hockey players had to go through. Have things gotten better? Harris: da Flava: Those players called out Vanbiesbrouck, but do you think a lot of those sorts of things are swept aside? Harris: I think to the extreme of a coach and general manager using the "N" bomb not to one of his players faces, but feeling secure enough to say it to the player's team-mates and nothing would happen that is the kind of really sick isolated incident that really occurs. The league has policies in place now. Back in 1998 when Chris Simon was playing for the Capitals, he slurred Mike Grier, who was then with Edmonton. The league called him on the carpet. Simon was fined, he was suspended, and basically told to apologize face-to-face, man-to-man to Mike Grier. That's how it's dealt with today.

Florida Panthers The 1998-99 regular season was a marked improvement over their last campaign. With a mix of talented players like Pavel Bure and young prosects including Mark Parrish, the team finished with a 30-34-18 record for 78 points. Though they had managed to accumulate 15 more points than the year before, they again missed the playoffs. The 1999-2000 season saw Pavel Bure make a comeback of sorts after going through a series of knee surgeries. Teamed up with his brother Valeri, the Bures broke the NHL season record for goals by a duo of brothers with 93 markers that year. The regular season ended with the Panthers finishing with a new best in terms of regular season points with 98 and met the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Devils, who would eventually go on to win the Stanley Cup that year, defeated the Panthers in a one sided affair.

John Vanbiesbrouck National Hockey League - New York Rangers, Florida, Philadelphia Goalie 306 wins, 29 shutouts, 2.13 gga, 5x NHL All-Star, Verzina Trophy winner, Terry Sawchuk Trophy winner, Tommy Ivan Trophy winner. We'd just moved to Florida in April of 1993. My brother had taken his own life. My wife and I were also dealing with our son's attention deficit disorder. Our team chaplain spoke to me about Christ. In hockey, there is a hierachy. From captain down to back-up goaltender. From management down to coach. I'd say to the chaplain, 'I can't see Jesus like I can see my family. I can't hold him. How can I put my family lower on the hierachy of my life when I love them so much?' When he answered that Jesus wants to share, I finally understood. It wasn't about hierachy. I could do 'share'. I prayed right there to accept Jesus. When I got home that night after practice, I told my wife I had some news. She told me she had some news. We discovered that apart from each other that day, we'd both made the same decision to follow Jesus! Difficulties are much easier because of faith. When you feel the Lord's leadership, you can cast your cares on Him.

USA Hockey names Barrasso and Richter to Olympic team Addition Of Two Goaltenders Brings U.S. Roster Total To Seventeen
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Hockey announced December 19 the selection of goaltenders Tom Barrasso (Carolina Hurricanes) and Mike Richter (New York Rangers) to the 2002 United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the XIX Olympic Winter Games. The addition of Barrasso and Richter brings the total number of National Hockey League players selected to Team USA to seventeen.
The announcement was made by 2002 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team
General Manager Craig Patrick, Associate General Manager Larry Pleau, Director of Player Personnel Art Berglund and USA Hockey Executive Director Doug Palazzari.
"We are adding two very experienced and accomplished goaltenders who are playing close to, or at, the top of their game. We're very pleased that they are having superior years, because strong goaltending will be extremely important to being successful in the Olympics," said Patrick.
During the 1980's, Tom Barrasso represented the United States several times in international competition, most recently at the 1987 Canada Cup. He also played for Team USA at the 1984 Canada Cup, recording a 2-2-1 overall record. Barrasso's other international playing experience includes being a member of the 1986 United States Men's National Team that competed at the

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach The NHL in 1998-99: a season of change The NHL used to be called the Original Six. Now the ever-changing NHL has the Original Six Divisions. Like football and baseball, the NHL now has half-a-dozen divisions with the addition of the Southeast and Northwest. Below we present our annual NHL preview column, giving readers the inside skinny on the plusses and minuses of every team headed into still another season. Part I includes the teams of the Eastern Conference, by division, with teams listed in order of predicted finish. Our 1998-1999 preview theme: "The good, the bad and the Ukes." ATLANTIC DIVISION Philadelphia Flyers Good news: The Flyers can go through this season without worrying about Eric Lindros' contract. Philly was the Eastern Conference's top scoring squad in 1997-1998. Flyers traded for a goaltender. John Vanbiesbrouck always had good rapport with coach Roger Neilson. Bad news: Team chemistry always seems amiss in Philadelphia. Vanbiesbrouck is coming off a poor season. Flyers don't seem to get much scoring from their defense. Uke(s): Speedy minor leaguer Mike Maneluk made the team and starts the season on the top line with Lindros and LeClair.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Russian hockey head murdered The gangland murder of Russian hockey chief Valentin Sych has shocked, but not surprised the hockey world. Sych, president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, was on his way to work in Moscow on April 22 when his car was hit by bullets from a passing car. Mob murders have become common in Moscow in recent years. The transition to a free market economy has channeled resources to private hands and generated a spate of contract killings of businessmen, bankers and officials. But this is the first time it has touched a prominent sports figure. Sych was the third most influential man in Russia's sports hierarchy. The killing is likely connected to Sych's knowledge of tax-free export-import activities conducted by sports groups, including the hockey federation. Reports in Moscow said the federation imported $4.2 million worth of tobacco in 1995 and more than $20 million worth of liquor. Organizations that received the tax breaks soon became prime targets for criminals who used them to launder money. Many inside Russian sports believe the federation is one of the few prosperous governing bodies in Russia. Reports said Sych was killed for not wanting to share the profits with certain individuals. The killing came two months after Sych complained to reporters that Russian criminals were increasingly muscling in on sports, trying to draw stars and individuals into illegal activities.

TROY - Now that the NHL players and owners have reached a deal, it is safe to say the 2005-06 season will not be put on ice. However, the players will be on ice real soon, and local hockey fans - regardless of age - could not be happier. The agreement on a new labor deal was a hot topic Wednesday at the Troy Sports Center, where hockey enthusiasts weighed in. "Finally," said Bobby Fredal, 12, of Grosse Pointe. "It's about time." After losing an entire season to the NHL lookout, players and owners finally met in a marathon session and hammered out details of an agreement that still needs to be ratified by both sides. So, for all intents and purposes, the lockout is over.
