Keith Tkachuk puts the puck past Ilya Bryzgalov to complete his hat trick on his way to a four-goal game. Old Guard carries Team USA again
Sept. 7, 2004
ST. PAUL, Minn. One of the themes that has greeted Team USA on a daily basis during this World Cup of Hockey has been the debate over the team's collective age. At 31 years and change, the Americans are the oldest team in the tournament. Note the accent on are Younger squads like Sweden, Germany and now Russia are taking their teams home after being ousted. For the Americans, experience came to the fore Tuesday night at the Xcel Energy Center as Keith Tkachuk, Mike Modano and Bill Guerin combined for 11 points, with Tkachuk scoring four goals, as Team USA eliminated a very good Russian team, 5-3. The Americans will play Friday night at Xcel against either Finland or the Czech Republic. That matchup will be cemented after Wednesday night's Canada-Slovakia game in Toronto. For Team USA, the victory was sweet redemption and vindication all wrapped in one. In preliminary-round play last week, the Russians had their way with the Americans in a 3-1 victory that featured some pretty one-sided play in favor of the Russians. The loss served as both a wake-up call and rallying cry for the Americans, who made some lineup changes and then defeated the Slovaks, 3-1, and pronounced themselves back on track.

USA Hockey officials are bringing back 13 players from the team that won the World Cup of Hockey crown back in 1996. U.S. vets return for repeat performance
As numerous Stanley Cup champions have learned over the years, trying to repeat is one tough assignment. So, imagine the Herculean task awaiting Team USA as it sets about to defend the World Cup of Hockey crown won back in 1996. To accomplish that task, USA Hockey officials are bringing back 13 players from the 1996 squad that played exceptionally well. Coach Ron Wilson of the San Jose Sharks also is back to reprise his successful role from the inaugural World Cup. Coming back are forwards Brett Hull, Doug Weight, Keith Tkachuk, Tony Amonte, Mike Modano, Bryan Smolinski, Bill Guerin, Steve Konowalchuk and Brian Rolston. Returning defensemen are Brian Leetch, Derian Hatcher, Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider. The veterans of 1996 will be augmented by a score of fresh faces, especially in goal, where Robert Esche of the Philadelphia Flyers, Ty Conklin of the Edmonton Oilers and Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders will form a new trio of goalies, taking over for the retired Mike Richter, Guy Hebert and Jim Carey. New to Team USA's World Cup defense corps is Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Ken Klee, Aaron Miller of the Los Angeles Kings, Jordan Leopold of the Calgary Flames and Brian Rafalski of the New Jersey Devils.

My Tips and Advice: Hockey Positions
Tip: Angles Every goalie needs work on their angles. Make three lines - one on the right boards, one on the left, and a line in middle. Rotate through the lines and make sure your players are shooting from the outside and from the angle. It is a natural tendency for a player to drift toward the middle to get a better scoring chance but remember this drill is for the goalies.
Tip: Leaving a Man Open As a right winger you need to make sure you don´t leave your man open off the draw. There is nothing wrong with being aggressive, but leaving your man open could lead to a quick, unexpected counterattack.
Tip: Backcheck Any winger who wants to impress a coach or a scout needs to backcheck. You will make an impression on any hockey evaluator with hustle on a backcheck. No matter how offensively skilled you are your value as a player will decline if you dog it on a backcheck.

30 Former Collegians Invited to U.S. Olympic Camp The 2006 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Torino, Italy, in February is assured of having a strong college hockey presence. Thirty of the 39 players invited to September's U.S. Olympic Orientation Camp, which USA Hockey announced today, played college hockey. Don Waddell, the former Northern Michigan star who is general manager of the U.S. team, made the announcement. The camp will be held Sept. 5-8 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Former Olympians such as Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight, Chris Drury, Aaron Miller, Brian Rafalski and Brian Rolston headline what is largely a young group, featuring two players who were in college as recently as 2003-04 (Zach Parise and Ryan Suter). The 30 players represent 19 schools, with Boston University, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin leading the way with three representatives apiece. Boston College, Lake Superior State, Michigan State, Minnesota and North Dakota each have two former players invited. "The orientation camp will be a terrific opportunity for our staff to come together with the candidates for our Olympic Team to assess the potential make-up of our squad," Waddell said. "It will not be a tryout camp as the evaluation process will continue throughout the first part of the NHL season, however, it will be an important first step in the total process."

http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/misc/international.html
Standings Statistics Schedules Merchandise ... Miscellaneous
Hockey East boasts a long tradition of representation on the world stage of ice hockey, most notably in prominent international tournaments.
Typical of the Hockey East influence was the U.S. roster for the World Junior Championships in January of 1999. Nine Hockey East players representing six different programs took part: Pat Aufiero (BU), Rick DiPietro (BU), Pat Foley (UNH), Ron Hainsey (UML), Barrett Heisten (Maine), Doug Janik (Maine), Willie Levesque (NU), Brooks Orpik (BC), and John Sabo (BU). DiPietro was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Goaltender.
In the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, eight former Hockey East players steered Team USA to a silver medal, its best finish since the 1980 team won the gold medal in storybook fashion. Among the 2002 silver medalists were 1998 Olympic team veterans Tony Amonte (BU), Bill Guerin (BC), Brian Leetch (BC) and Keith Tkachuk (BU). Former Hockey East Commissioner Lou Lamoriello served as the General Manager for the 1998 U.S squad with fellow former Friar Ron Wilson serving as head coach.
The biggest story of 1998, however, was not NHL players being allowed to compete for the first time, but rather women's hockey being a medal sport for the first time. Integral to the development of the American women's game were two Hockey East alums, former Northeastern coach Ben Smith and former Northeastern player, Tom Mutch. Smith coached Team USA to a stunning win over favored Canada in the 1998 Olympic gold medal game, providing the most memorable moment of the Olympiad.
