Phoenix Coyotes
The Phoenix Coyotes started playing in Arizona in 1996, but the team has had a much longer history within professional hockey. They were once the Winnipeg Jets, a franchise conceived in 1967 when the team joined the Western Canada Junior Hockey League. The Jets owner Ben Hatskin joined the World Hockey Association in 1971 and had good success in the WHA, sporting super star Bobby Hull and winning three championships. As the WHA ran into problems, the Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League in the 1979 expansion. The Jets started their NHL career by losing 4-2 to the Pittsburg Penguins in that first game. Their first season was representative of a typical season for an NHL expansion team, stumbling along even into their second year. They finished with the worst record for the 1980-81 season and ended up drafting Dale Hawerchuck with their first overall pick. Hawerchuck had an excellent junior career with the Cornwall Royals and he did not waste any time making an impressive NHL impression. He won the Calder trophy as the best rookie, scoring 45 goals and adding 58 assists for a lofty 103 points. The next couple of years saw the Winnipeg Jets continue to build a respectable team, coached by Tom Watt. They were still far from the NHL top echelon teams, with frequest playoff disappointments and tough geographical comparisons to the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. The Jets went back and forth in terms of team success, usually ending up in the mid to lower regular season standings.

http://mt.hockeybird.com/archives/000761.html
Will Keith Tkachuk come to NY? Friday - January 26, 2001 Elite power forwards continually slipped through our fingers in the Neil Smith era. Eric Lindros goes to Philadelphia. Brendan Shanahan goes to Hartford and then Detroit. Keith Primeau goes to Philadelphia. Now the inevitable rumors with Keith Tkachuk seem to be reaching conclusion and the question begs: will he come to NY? Background
A few years back, despite being under contract, Tkachuk held out of training camp to better his contract. He was not media roasted like Yashin; instead he received the contract he demanded. It is fitting, then, that his contract is paving the road out of Phoenix, the city he wants to play in. The Coyotes are losing money; their prospective new owner has his hands tied by his financial backers; and KT’s $8.3 million salary is an eyesore on the books. Why won’t the new ownership try to keep their star? From a hockey standpoint, KT belongs on the club. He’s one of their emotional leaders, and his on-ice play is superb. However, though the media fronts Gretzky’s name, Steve Ellman is the key to the Coyotes staying in Phoenix. A developer in the area, Ellman plans to build an arena for the team to make the club profitable in the long-term.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Keith Tkachuk: got it all together You name it, chances are Keith Tkachuk has been its poster boy at one time or another. Party Boy Keith, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Keith, Insecure Keith. Uncle Sam Keith, Charitable Keith, Undisciplined Keith, Fifty Goal Keith. Canada Losing One of Its Franchises Keith, Immature Keith, World Cup Champion Keith. It's amazing that such a basic young man, who employs such a simple approach to the game, can be so many different things to so many people. So simple - so complex. So radical - so extreme. Yet that's exactly what the Phoenix Coyotes' Ukrainian left winger has been since bursting onto the NHL scene in the wake of the 1992 Olympics. Now, though, there is call to suggest the recently turned 25-year-old Bostonian is emerging with a new and improved identity, on and off the ice. That is: Got It All Together Keith. "It's all part of the maturation process young players go through," said Bobby Smith, Coyotes' executive vice-president for hockey operations. "Keith is taking responsibility to lead our team. He wants to be acknowledged as one of the best players in the game. He wants to be known as a winner." After a sluggish start to this season, Tkachuk has emerged as one of the game's most dominant players, and his Coyotes have become a second-half factor in the Western Conference.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Keith Tkachuk: Captain Coyote Phoenix Coyotes' left winger Keith Tkachuk was jokingly labeled the $6 million man for the substantial contract he signed last summer, but in real life he's no robotic man. He hurts like everyone else, and this 24-year-old Ukrainian native of Melrose, Mass., is still feeling the effects of being stripped of the Winnipeg Jets' captaincy before the start of the 1995-1996 season. Then Jets' coach Terry Simpson made the move after the team matched a five-year, $17.2 million offer sheet Tkachuk had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. "When the coach-GM (John Paddock) tells you (that) you will always be the captain, when he says that and does something else, well, that's brutal," Tkachuk said. "They basically lied to me and I can't respect that." Tkachuk's pride was soothed only somewhat when, for the Jets' last game in Winnipeg (Game 6 of the first round series against the Detroit Red Wings), he was the team's acting captain in place of injured left winger Kris King. "Yeah, it was awful nice they put the 'C' on me for the last game in the playoffs," Tkachuk added, "but I'll never forget what they did to me. It was wrong."

USA Hockey invites 39 to Olympic camp
Modano, Guerin, Tkachuk, Weight can play in third straight Games
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Bill Guerin, Mike Modano, Keith Tkachuk and Doug Weight were among 39 players USA Hockey invited Thursday to its September camp in Colorado Springs, the first step toward selecting a team for next year's Olympics in Turin. The roster includes four goaltenders, 14 defensemen and 21 forwards, though previous Olympians such as Chris Chelios, Brett Hull, Jeremy Roenick and Brian Leetch are not on the list. "This doesn't represent the players that will be definitely on Team USA," said Don Waddell, general manager of the 2006 U.S. Olympic team. "We didn't feel we needed to bring (some of the older players) to the orientation camp." Waddell said USA Hockey has contacted many of those players, including Leetch, to explain what is happening with the orientation. "It's not a tryout camp that we're having," he said. "It's to get the players used to what has to happen at the Olympics." Waddell said the NHL's regular season will serve as the tryout.
