In Hockey, Detroit Is the Capital City
By Jennifer Frey
Washington Post Columnist
Tuesday, June 9, 1998; Page C02
Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena, the Capitals begin their bid to win their first Stanley Cup in their 24th year of existence. And the Red Wings, who still own last season's Cup, are looking for their ninth. For those Washingtonians who think it's a bit greedy for Detroit fans to hunger for a second straight Cup while this city has waited 24 long years merely to get to the finals, it must be explained that Detroit is hockey's team of the 1990s, and, for this group of players, one Cup does not satisfy. Camp has since moved a three-hour drive north of Detroit to Traverse City, Mich., home to Gordie Howe, and the residents of that small burg have done their share to continue the mania. By late last June, there were signs on the Traverse City deli, on the grocery store, on the gas station, and at the corner market. They were welcome signs. And they were hung two months in advance. Washington Coach Ron Wilson, a Stanley Cup novice, has not made any trips to Sherwin-Williams, but he's no slouch when it comes to mind games as well. A master motivator in his own locker room, Wilson poked at the Sabres all last series, until Hasek felt compelled to publicly declare that he had not turned into a head case.

Gauntlet Sports - Hockey's greatest rivalry
Story by: Lawrence Bailey , Features Editor
Story date: Thursday, March 13, 2003 Tuesday evening I settled down in front of my television for the latest installment in a time-honoured tradition, one of sport's greatest rivalries: The Battle of Alberta.
While Stamps-Eskies clashes, Dinos-Bears battles and, most inexplicably, Cannons-Trappers tilts, have all been sucked into the whole arena of Calgary and Edmonton's sports rivalry, we all know the only one that really matters.
    The Flames and the Oilers.
As a young child who grew up in the glorious 1980s in Edmonton, my allegiances are unflappable. I will be an Oiler fanatic until the day I die.
I remember sitting in stunned disbelief watching Steve Smith celebrate his 23rd birthday by banking a shot in off the back of Grant Fuhr, costing the Oilers the game, the series and (in my opinion) the Stanley Cup.
I remember the immeasurable rage that built up within me as Theoren Fleury slid halfway across the ice in celebration of the Flames' game six victory in the 1991 Smythe Division Semi-Finals. I wanted to rip that little puke's head off, I was so angry. Esa Tikkanen's goal over Mike Vernon's shoulder two nights later, in front of a sold out Saddledome (yes, it used to sell out), in overtime, exacted some revenge but not nearly enough. I still hate Fleury to this very day.
Such is life as an Oiler fan, bred on the hatred of "that team" from "down there."

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Hockey still reigns as Canada's top sport Nothing's changed. It's the same as it's been for the last hundred or so years. Kids growing up in the land to the north of us still pick ice hockey overwhelming over any other organized team sport. And why not? What used to be simply a favorite form of physical education or a youngster's automatic choice for activity with friends has certainly blossomed into a potential career move. Witness so many young Ukrainian Canadians entering the ranks of Canadian junior hockey: some 49 known young Ukrainians were found playing pucks in the three major junior leagues in 1997-1998. Good chance there are many others. And why not? With upcoming expansion plans, the National Hockey League will total 30 teams within the next two seasons. The bottom line: this means jobs. Well-paying jobs. This hockey pundit's research attempts revealed some 28 pucksters of Ukrainian origin learning their trade in the aggressive Western Hockey League, another 18 training in the Ontario Hockey League and just three lonely Ukes signed up in the Quebec League. Below is a brief listing and mention of each and every one of them with their most recent scoring stats in parentheses. A tidbit of official information comes first. The Canadian Hockey League is an alliance of the three major junior leagues: Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League. After the regular season, the three leagues compete in a round-robin tournament to decide the Memorial Cup championship.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach World-class shinny No matter what changes the NHL institutes to its All-Star Game format - this year, for the first time, it was North America versus the World - it remains a non-hitting game of shinny. A goal by Mark Messier proved to be the winner as the North American side edged the World team 8-7 on January 18. League officials hoped the new format would lead to more spirited physical play, and there were more nudges along the boards than usual, but no major collisions. "You think guys are going to go out there and hammer each other in an exhibition game?" asked Captain Coyote Keith Tkachuk, one of three NHLers of Ukrainian descent participating in the 1998 gala event. "Not a chance. We're not out there trying to hurt each other. That would be dumb." The closeness of the score kept things interesting, though the World team threatened to make it a blowout in the early going. Four minutes into the first period, it had built a 3-0 lead on the fastest two goals from the start of an All-Star game. North America's comeback from the 3-0 deficit was the biggest in All-Star Game history. The excitable Tkachuk led the North American attack with a pair of goals. No. 1 NHL player of all time Wayne Gretzky drew two assists, the first of which moved him past Mario Lemieux into sole possession of first place in All-Star Game scoring. Gretzky has 12 goals and 22 points in 17 games.

Esa Tikkanen—Super Pest Every championship team needs a player who pesters his opponents. A player who can get a rise out of the most even-headed players and draw the opposition into stupid penalties. I n Esa Tikkanen, the Oilers had arguably the best pest that ever played the game. Although hated on the ice, Tikkanen was a true character in the dressing room; his personally concocted pidgin of Finnish and English confused everyone from compatriot Jari Kurri to his Canadian-born teammates. Although the Oilers selected him as a defensive-minded forward, Tikkanen became a fan favourite as one of the Oilers clutch scorers. He scored five playoff winning goals, including the famous Game 7 overtime winner at Calgary’ Saddledome in 1991. His 436 career points ranked him seventh on the Oilers all-time list as of 2003. Tikkanen, a heralded Finnish junior star, spent time as a teen playing junior hockey in Saskatchewan. In 1983, the Oilers drafted "Tikk" in the fourth round of the draft. Still in Europe, he did not return to North America right away, choosing instead to play in the Finnish Elite League. In 1985, after the Finnish national team had ended its springtime run in the World Championships, Tikkanen signed with the Oilers and arrived in time to participate in three playoff games and hoist the Stanley Cup. He spent most of the 1985-86 campaign with the Oilers’ minor-league team in Nova Scotia. After the Oilers’ had lost to t
