Thursday - September 15, 2005 Training Camp - Day #2 So far, coach Tom Renney has kept the training camp practices intense and high tempo. With all of the young players competing for spots, it would make sense that they push it to the limit to try and impress the staff. The guys over at Blueshirt Bulletin continue to have some of the best training camp coverage. So far it seems that many of the younger players look like they have a chance, at least, to play at the NHL level. Larry Brooks writes that Renney promised that the team would not make the "Manny Malholtra" mistake with this crop of youngsters. Larry also reports that Blair Betts is getting the first crack as the starting fourth line center. One disturbing thing Larry reports is that the referees at camp are letting everything go in scrimmages. Renney said that they would crack down today, and in my opinion it couldn't happen fast enough. The very last thing the Rangers need is a parade to the penalty box when the season starts. The new head of officiating , Stephen Walkom, promised that the rules would be strictly enforced.

Over His Head Friday - November 21, 2003 Jason Labarbera Hello New York and everywhere else, welcome to the Birdcage. I want to review some of what occurred in Colorado last night and take a look at Jason Labarbera. Looking Familiar: You can argue with me about a lot of different hockey issues, I am by no means an expert on all aspects of the game. Although I can't call myself an expert in goaltending it is the one thing I believe I do know pretty well. Having faced real NHL shots (never in a real game) and playing with and against some great hockey players I think I know something about the position. I have been watching NHL keepers all my life. Folks, from the opening face-off, Jason was in over his head. I thought I was watching myself as I saw Labarbera play last night. Great heart, excellent effort but completely overmatched. He was what I used to be....an adrenaline goalie. Oh, it was flowing through his veins like mad last night. While Jason put in an admirable performance I didn't see anything that would allow me to think that Jason can be a number one keeper in the NHL. Now let's be fair here......being a number one NHL keeper means that you are amongst the top 35 goaltenders in the world, so it's not a crime here that Jason is not on the list. But I want to point out what I saw, or rather didn't see. Labarbera didn't show a wicked fast glove or any real stickhandling ability. He didn't show good position either. Quite the opposite, he was out of position as often as he was in position. He took himself out of the play way too many times. Even on some of his saves he ended up on his ass praying for a whistle. And the rebounds were those of a keeper who was scrambling and fighting the puck. These are all things I did when I faced very high quality players.

http://www.veteranpresence.com/FPOTM/tikkanen.html
Esa Tikkanen
(by Bill Barnwell)
The idea of the role player's weight being much more important than it really is, particularly in the playoffs, is not limited to America alone. The hockey checking-line winger is normally considered a common appetizer; a mozzarella stick. Tasty but very replacable and something you don't want to overpay for. It's pretty hard to mess up a checking-line winger. Once the playoffs come around, the checking-line winger becomes caviar. Some people like it, I guess. The prototype for this type of player? Esa Tikkanen. Why do I remember him? Because he cost the Washington Capitals their only shot at a Stanley Cup. Why do I care about the Washington Capitals? I'm not really sure. My best guess is that the first hockey game I attended, when I was probably three, was les Capitals facing the Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum. The Capitals presumably won, and I presumably fell in love with Rod Langway (who also deserves an FPotM) and Bengt Gustafasson (who is definitely getting the love soon). As a result, I've stuck with them ever since - even when I lived on Long Island and Dale Hunter decided that assaulting Pierre Turgeon was MANLY-MEATY~!. But I digress. Tikkanen, when he started his career with the fading Oilers dynasty in the eighties, was actually a pretty decent scorer. Of course - he was playing with the best offensive team in hockey history - so who really knows how good of a scorer he was. Dave Concepcion had 84 RBIs one season, too. Once the nineties hit, though, Tikkanen suddenly lost his scoring touch; he had as many goals (13) in the 1989 playoffs as he had in any of his last five NHL seasons. He switched organizations eight times in his final seven seasons, not including his stay with Helsinki during the NHL lockout. He essentially became a hired gun; a playoff pest. His job was to be a nuisance to the other team's top line, shutting down their top winger - not as valuable as, say, a Bobby Holik, but still important. He'd also get in front of the net and chip in with the occasional goal - he had nine in fifteen games for the 1997 Rangers. In 1998, he jumped onto the ship of the Washington Capitals at the trading deadline.
