Boyes bronzed Rookie All-Star
Wednesday, April 29, 1999
Keefe is Rookie of the Year The ERIE OTTERS of the Ontario Hockey League are proud to announce that 17 year-old Mississauga, Ontario, native Brad Boyes finished third in the Emms Family Award voting for the OHL Rookie of the Year and earned rookie all-star accolades as the second team center. ERIE OTTERS General Manager Sherry Bassin was pleased with the selection. "It is a testament to Brad's work ethic that he be named to the rookie team. The combination of his dedication and natural talent should earn him a bright furture in the OHL and eventually in the NHL." The OTTERS first round choice (12th pick overall) in the 1998 OHL Priority Selection made the jump from Bantam level to the OHL and finished the 1998-99 season with 24 goals and 36 assists for a total of 60 points in 59 games, good enough for sixth place among rookie scorers and fourth on the OTTERS scoring list.

Peter Worrell often towers over teammates like Denis Shvidki. A diamond in rough going
Feb. 13, 2001
The young career of Florida Panthers' left wing Peter Worrell illustrates how difficult it is to play in the National Hockey League, where the world's best players engage in a grinding six-month, 82-game ordeal to qualify for two months more of intense playoff competition in hopes of hoisting sport's oldest and hardest-won trophy, the Stanley Cup. Like many others who attracted attention with their offensive skills, Worrell was handed the role of defensive checker and intimidator upon breaking into the big time. He wants to improve his scoring ability but he knows his team needs him to use his 6-foot 6-inch, 235-pound body to control the boards, win the battles in the corners, crash the net, and provide behavioral modification to opponents who take liberties with his teammates.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Tverdovsky's season in jeopardy: diagnosis debate continues When New Jersey Devils blueliner Oleg Tverdovsky suffered from dizziness and nausea for more than three weeks, he feared he might be suffering post-concussion syndrome from a hit he took in a late November game against Detroit. But a battery of tests determined Tverdovsky had a viral infection and then suffered a relapse. "It was all viral," said GM Lou Lamoriello. "If he'd had a concussion he couldn't have played. He wouldn't have played." After missing five straight games and seven of 10, Tverdovsky returned to the line-up last January 13. "I felt fine. No dizziness," he said. "I got sick twice, and maybe I got shaken up a little bit on the hit. "Maybe it's the different climate. I haven't been in winter since I left Russia. [Or is it actually Ukraine?] That's nine years." A week or so later the Devils and the ailing defenseman were continuing to play head games. Indeed, the speedy skater's season appeared to be in jeopardy. Although the team maintained tests conducted by several neurologists and noted head injury expert Dr. Karen Johnston did not show Tverdovsky had suffered a concussion back in November, the player's agent claimed otherwise. Don Meehan had his client visit Dr. Johnston in Montreal when fatigue and dizziness sidelined Tverdovsky for all but three games in January.

Beyond the BlueLine Hockey Jackets Special Teams Fluster Florida In 4-1 Win

By Steve Sirk Columbus Wired (10/19/02)
Entering tonight’s game with Florida, the Blue Jackets haven’t been a very good 5-on-5 hockey team. When teams are even up, the Jackets had surrendered seven goals, while scoring a measly two, only one of which was by a forward.
Maybe that 5-on-5 stuff is overrated.
The Blue Jackets continue to be a team that lives or dies by its special teams. After suffering a brutally horrific death in St. Louis on Thursday, the Jackets’ reanimated special teams were living large with a pair of power play goals and a perfect night of penalty kills in a 4-1 win over the Panthers.
The power play would invigorate the masses with a goal just 3:46 into the contest. Florida attempted a wrap a clearance around the boards behind their net, but the fancy footwork of David Vyborny stopped the puck along the left wall. Vyborny dropped the puck to newly-recalled Derrick Walser who unleashed a rocket from the point that was deflected in by Grant Marshall.
Vyborny wasn’t done yet. Later in the period, he received a Ray Whitney pass and then executed a precision give-and-go with Andy Cassels to double the Jackets lead at 14:52 of the first period. (An even-strength goal no less!)

FLORIDA PANTHERS RE-SIGN HORDICHUK AND SHVIDKI
SUNRISE, FLA. - Florida Panthers General Manager Rick Dudley announced today that the club has re-signed restricted free agents LW Darcy Hordichuk and RW Denis Shvidki to one-year contracts. Dudley also announced that the Panthers have signed RW Lee Goren to a one-year contract. As per club policy, financial details of the pacts were not disclosed. Hordichuk, 22, was acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes last season along with a second- round draft pick in the 2003 NHL Entry draft in exchange for D Brad Ference. Shvidki, 22, was Florida's first choice (12th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Goren, 25, was an unrestricted free agent that split time last season between the Boston Bruins and Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. "We're very excited to announce today's signings," stated Dudley. "Darcy Hordichuk is a tough kid and by nature he's somewhat of a pugilist. We think he can really bang, we think he's smart enough to play both ends and he's a guy that always provides energy for the players and the fans. Denis Shvidki is obviously a very talented first-round pick who showed flashes of brilliance last year. He needs to show that brilliance on a consistent level. He's got the talent and he's got the ability. Lee Goren is a very big kid with a nice touch and an edge to his game. We think that at worst he's a very good callup, but at best he's an NHL scoring winger with size."

Thank God. It's Hockey Season! With apologies to atheists. After watching the New Jersey Devils claim the Stanley Cup and having to endure a boring sports summer of baseball (The world's slowest moving sport) and a Summer Olympics that was broadcast after the results were known, the NHL is back, proof there is a God...
This year looks to be interesting. The Devils are the team to beat. The young guys on the team learnt how to win and look for them to keep on winning. A team with solid defense and explosive speed and scoring ability...
Last year the Flyers led the league in soap opera plot lines. There are some this year too. Can goaltender Brian Boucher have a good sophomore season? What will the team get for injury prone super star Eric Lindros? Can they win in the regular season without Big E? I think there will be a drop in performance but they will definitely make the playoffs and that is all that counts...
The Rangers brought in the two saviors Mark Messier and Glen Sather. It will take more than those two to make the Rangers a competitor. Messier once delivered on a promised cup victory. Only a true Ranger fan would believe Messier's promise to be in the playoffs this year. The Eastern Conference is tough and they still will not be good enough to make the playoffs...
The Pens are an improved team if and only if they work out their goaltender situation. This team is led by Jaromir Jagr, currently the world's best player. The heavy European roster makes them dangerous with the puck if not with their checks. If they don't win the cup look for them to make Vaclav Havel the team president next year. Playoff bound if the goaltending holds out...
