With the win at the Big Hat ice arena, Canada improved to a perfect 3-0 in round-robin play to claim first place in group D and set up a quarterfinal match with Kazakstan, which finished in fourth place in group C, in the knock-out portion of the tourney. The U.S., meanwhile, fell to a record of one win and two losses and will face the loser of the game between Russia and the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the single-elimination tourney getting under way Wednesday. The Russia-Czech Republic game, which will determine the winner of group C, will be played later Monday evening. Primeau, who plays with the Carolina Hurricanes of the North American National Hockey League (NHL), scored a short-handed goal in the middle of the second period, banging in a rebound off a Steve Yzerman shot.

18:45 RUS 7-4 FIN Pavel Bure put on a goal-scoring clinic Friday, leading Russia to a 7-4 victory over Finland and setting up a showdown with the Czech Republic for the gold medal in the men's ice hockey tournament of the Nagano Olypmic Winter Games. Bure, of the Vancouver Canucks, scored five goals three on breakaways lifting the Russians to a 3-0 lead at the Big Hat ice arena in the first 21 minutes and then adding two goals with 4 minutes remaining. In Sunday's championship final, however, Bure and his teammates will meet Dominik Hasek, who stopped 24 shots against Canada's star-studded lineup, to give the Czech Republic a 2-1 shoot-out victory over the pre-tournament favorite. The match-up for the gold medal comes as a surprise to many who had figured that the first Olympics featuring the stars of the North American National Hockey League (NHL) would come down to a showdown between Canada and the United States. Asked about the unexpected gold medal game, Russian coach Vladimir Yurzinov said, ''I think it is very gratifying because hopefully no one will look down at European-style hockey. We will instead be treated with respect.''

While Michelle Kwan was all business, Tara Lipinski was determined to make friends and have fun, and she left Nagano with a cool keepsake Olympic Men's Hockey Recap (Czech Republic-Russia) Posted: Sun February 22, 1998 at 3:10 a.m EST Czech Republic Russia The Czech Republic captured its first hockey gold medal and its only gold medal of the Nagano Olympics as Petr Svoboda scored in the third period and Dominik Hasek recorded his second shutout of the tournament, 1-0 over arch-rival Russia. The former Czechoslovakia won four silver medals and three bronze in hockey, losing to the Soviet Union in the gold medal game three times. But the underdog Czechs were able to complete their Cinderella run through hockey's first "dream tournament" behind the goaltending of Hasek and an opportunistic offense. Hasek finished with 20 saves but was rarely tested over the final 30 minutes as the high-powered Russians were repeatedly frustrated by a tight Czech defense.

Despite the loutish behavior of the U.S., the expulsion of a Swedish player and the favorites' early ouster, the answer is, Yes, this was a dream of an Olympic tournament
    by Michael Farber
Posted: Wed February 25, 1998 The Russia-Czech Republic hockey final had so little appeal to American viewers that it's surprising CBS didn't try to resell the rights to the Voice of America. Of course, by then the U.S. team, which played sloppy and selfish hockey, had left in disgrace, although America's frat boys did pick up a medal in the Olympic fire-extinguisher toss. In an embarrassment of another kind, Sweden's Ulf Samuelsson was unmasked as a U.S. citizen and run out of Japan just ahead of the Swedish team. The favored Canadians also bowed out early. Other than that, Mr. Bettman, how did you like the play? "The hockey tournament was what we had predicted and hoped for," said Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner. "From a pure hockey perspective, this has been a wonderful tournament."

Czech Republic Beats Russia for Gold
By Rachel Alexander Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, February 23, 1998; Page D1 The Russians were never able to get through Dominik Hasek (right), and the Czechs finally added a gold medal to their Olympic collection. (Stanislav Peska/AP) The 1969 victory was more rife with ideology, coming less than a year after the Soviets rolled tanks into downtown Prague, crushing a budding movement toward democracy. Today's win was more about pride in the Czech Republic, split from Slovakia since 1993, than about defeating the Russians. This was about the accomplishment of a team from a small country, a team with the tournament's best goaltender and one of its better forwards but not much else besides a strong belief in itself. "My parents still talk about the 1969 game," said defenseman Petr Svoboda, who scored the game's only goal midway through the third period. Jaromir Jagr, the team's most recognized player, had come close earlier but hit a post. "Beating the Russians is still a big thing for that generation."

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach The NHL in 1998-99: a season of change Here's Part II of our annual NHL preview, giving you the plusses and minuses of the teams of the Western Conference, by division, with teams listed in order of predicted finish in 1998-1999. CENTRAL DIVISION Detroit Red Wings Good news: Essentially the same team that won the past two consecutive Stanley Cups. Darren McCarty, Martin LaPointe and Anders Eriksson are all still improving. Captain Steve Yzerman is one of the most respected leaders in pro sports today. Bad news: Coach Scotty Bowman's status up in the air. Key players Yzerman, Igor Larionov and Larry Murphy getting up there in age. D Niklas Lidstrom talking about returning to Sweden after this season. Uke(s): Veteran enforcer Joey Kocur (63 GP-6 G-5 A-PTS 92 PIM and four goals in 18 playoff games) returns for a try at a three-peat. St. Louis Blues Good news: The Blues held on to free agents Al MacInnis and Geoff Courtnall. MacInnis has the most feared slap shot in hockey. Chris Pronger seems to be an even tougher version of Larry Robinson. LW Pavol Demitra, 23, is showing signs of becoming a star. Bad news: Brett Hull represented a high percentage of the team's offense in 1997-1998. He's gone. GT Grant Fuhr wasn't as good as he was expected to be. Blues need youngsters (Marty Reasoner and Michael Handzus) to mature quickly.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Enthusiastic Hrudey retires with no regrets San Jose Sharks' goaltender Kelly Hrudey traded in his goalie mask and pads for a microphone. He called it an even swap. Hrudey, 37, closed the book on his 15-year NHL playing career when he announced his retirement on July 30, 1998. But he planned to stay real close to his beloved sport by working as a color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. "I have no formal training (in broadcasting), but I sure enjoy it," Hrudey said. "I'm going to tackle this as enthusiastically as I have my hockey career." Hrudey, who also played for the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, announced his retirement after the Sharks acquired goalie Steve Shields from the Buffalo Sabres. "I have no regrets," Hrudey said at the time. "My retirement is a celebration, not a sad event." The venerable netminder posted a career record of 271-265-88 (wins-losses-ties) and a goals-against-average of 3.43 with 17 career shutouts. He played in the Stanley Cup final in 1993 with the Kings and stopped 73 of 75 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a dramatic 3-2, four-overtime Game 7 victory over the Washington Capitals in the 1987 playoffs. Despite such a long and storied tenure in the NHL, Hrudey said the most memorable moment of his entire career came at the very start. "The No. 1 highlight (was being) told I had made the New York Islanders (in 1983). What a thrill that was! They were four-time defending Stanley Cup champions. I remember going out in the parking lot and raising my arms in the air like in the movie 'Rocky', at the top of the stairs."
